There’s often this recurring sentiment within the gaming industry that whatever strategy Xbox is following, Sony must follow it too. Many of you will recall, at the height of Game Pass’ popularity, PlayStation was put under intense pressure to replicate the business model or risk losing its market position. That hasn’t transpired, but now the Redmond firm has started porting its games to other platforms, many expect its Japanese rival to follow suit.
One story that’s been rumbling all year is that Helldivers 2, the fastest-selling PS Studios game in history, will be ported to the Xbox Series X|S. And a fresh wave of headlines this week has meant the story simply won’t go away.
Writing on the game’s Discord, and picked up by Eurogamer.net, one fan lamented the fact that he’ll “never” have reinforcements from his Xbox brethren. To which, developer Arrowhead’s community manager replied: “Who says [Helldivers 2] couldn’t [be ported to Xbox]? It’s not up to us but to Sony and Phil to duke out, but hypothetically speaking, if both partners think it would benefit them from a financial [and] brand standpoint, it could.”
To be honest, in an era where Sony is releasing LEGO Horizon Adventures day-and-date on Nintendo Switch, nothing would surprise us anymore.
But generally, we’re not overly convinced the Xbox market is big enough to justify the drama. While the game certainly would sell some copies on Xbox Series X|S, the console’s sales are in a bit of a slump – and ironically, the PlayStation maker would probably need a Game Pass deal to justify the conversion, which wouldn’t be a great look for PS5 and PC players.
Stranger things have happened, of course, but it’s unlikely.

You never know but I expect it to come to the next switch before Xbox but who knows. The bigger player base the better for live service titles
Out of curiosity I've just checked change.org - 132,000 Xbox faithful signed the petition
Why would it need a Game Pass deal? Not that I think it'll happen anyway, but if it does, it definitely wouldn't be on Game Pass.
Game is unironically a good fit for Xbox since shooters are the no1 genre on it always been.
Sony and Microsoft should come up with the biggest agreement in World history....
GamePass on PlayStation and PS+ on Xbox.
The world would be such a beautiful peaceful place to game.
I could see it, and since the game is crossplay, why not since it allows more players to play together.
I always think that live service games should be on as many platforms as physically possible.
Microsoft brought some games to PS5. I think Sony should do it. Could be a start of a great partnership.
The people that are the most vocal about this on twitter are also the ones using derogatory terms like ponies and making PS5pro memes. The petition is primarily for malicious intents.
Let's all feel bad for Xbox fans. Their god company got so big that they can't have exclusives anymore and now they have to beg for games from the rival company they claim to hate. Truly my heart bleeds for them.
@Enuo I love a hefty dose of sarcasm with my morning coffee.
Yeah, let's not. This isn't a good idea, and MS needs to push the publishers they bought onto PS (horrible idea to buy them and it's already failing evidenced by us getting our games back), and then actually invest in some management that knows up from down, then have them make their own portfolio of great games.
@Prime_Objective none would buy because it wouldn’t be on game pass.
Can we have ratchet and clank instead 🙂🤣
@AgentGuapo that's bs though 🤣
I don't get how people think the Xbox market isn't big enough for Helldiver's 2. When Sea of Thieves has been on the go since 2018. Other GaaS games do well also on the platform.
Putting exclusives on PC is bad enough for the Sony brand when it comes to keeping customers (I know because I wouldnt have really considered PC before their current strategy), but putting exclusives on XBox would be sheer lunacy... why sell a few copies on a console with a much smaller user base, a lot of whom wont buy games (only rent through gamepass), at the risk of losing customers due to an ever dwindling number of real exclusives?!
Some of the same people who applauded purchased studios becoming exclusive and cancelling PS5 versions.
It better not, haha! I have built up my digital library on Xbox for years, but just bought a PS5 last week to finally play God of War, etc, but Helldivers 2 was the game I really wanted to experience!
Jokes aside, I think big online games like this, Sea of Thieves, etc, should be on all systems where possible. Xbox having Halo, PS having Last of Us, etc, makes sense, gives the consoles an identity, but the more people playing these big online games, surely the better?
Helldivers honestly feels more like an Xbox game than a PlayStation game and I’ve been saying that since I’ve tried it. It seems like the Xbox community is more friendly toward live service online multiplayer shooters. I think it’d print money on the platform if Sony does it, but I also get that Sony’s trying really hard to get people to give up on Xbox full stop.
I could only see it being playable on Xbox in the form of the next Xbox being a PC and hence can access Steam. Sony's only porting to Xbox when they're forced to (i.e. MLB forcing MLB The Show, Bungie acquisition forcing Bungie games).
It could happen, just like Starfield could be ported to PS5. Pipe dream at best.
The argument for it needing to Be on GP makes absolutely zero sense. It’s a terrible argument and strange logic to jump to.
I think however it is too late for it to go to Xbox and make a big difference.
@Major_Player it just doesn’t work because 90% of the games are 3rd party.
If MS did a first party GP tier specially for PlayStation that may work. ( and Sony could do the same)
But then at that point, they may as well just collab and design a console between them.
When Starfield got made into an Xbox exclusive the xbox fanboys rhetoric was that if you want to play it then buy an xbox.
So right back at ya, you want to play HellDivers 2 then go buy a Playstation 5 and stop whinging.
@Medic_alert While I agree that currently one of the big distinguishing factors for a console is its library and "spreading the love" would dilute that, it doesn't mean that there are not viable solutions to this problem.
This is a pipe-dream (and not going to happen); but it is an example of a win-win scenario: Sony and Microsoft form a coalition where there is one storefront that they both have equal stake in. That 30% cut gets split between them but with a larger portion of that share going to the platform holder that made the sale. A utopia.
What is it with Arrowhead and their unprofessional and outspoken community managers?
It wasn't too long ago that their community manager was encouraging the review bombing on Steam to send Sony a message about the PSN login requirement and now they're trying to bait the audience to push for an Xbox port and again make Sony look like the bad guys for withholding it. If I were Sony I would re-examine the relationship with Arrowhead for future games.
Nah, let Xbox die alone in that hill.
Why not, if they have the resources? More the merrier for a live service title like this.
That said, I never bought into the widespread idea exclusives are bad, an idea that seemed to get some steam around 2020 and usually used as some way to malign Sony. Exclusives built the industry, built Sony into a market leader. How do you attract users to your box, your ecosystem, if you don't have unique experiences and every console does the same thing?
I don't think the people that argued it ever thought about it too hard or are very aware of the history of the video game industry.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner : A 1st Party GamePass tier for PlayStation and 1st party PS+ games for Xbox would be a magnificent idea....
they wouldn't have to be Day 1 releases, even older games would be enough for people to sign up for both services.
sony owns the helldivers ip not a chance it will ever be on xbox..
I mean, Microsoft have bought up half the gaming industry, why exactly do they need 1 Sony game so bad? Curious.
sony prevented lego horizons game from being on xbox..
@Ainu20 MS is conditioning its player base to sub to GP instead of buying games. GP deals are the only way for 3rd party publishers to guarantee revenue on Xbox nowadays.
They should port Helldivers 2 to Xbox. Not just because it's a live service game and therefore benefits from being in as many places as possible, but also just because it's a damn good game and more people should be able to play it. Like someone said above, if Xbox and PlayStation want to keep some exclusives to maintain a brand identity, cool, fill your boots, but games that're multiplayer focused and the people who play them surely benefit from being available across multiple formats?
If Helldivers 2 bombed and didn't sell then I could see it as a possibility. But since it was a big hit I don't think there's any chance of that happening.
@ro-kurorai I get the theory, but if Larian can put Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox without Game Pass, then Sony can do the same with Helldivers. If the demand is there, Xbox players will still purchase games.
Might as well do it. It'll help keep the playerbase alive.
@Grumblevolcano really hope that happens steam on Xbox would be ace all those metrodvanias that dont come consoles I could play 😍
I consulted leading experts in this field and they say there is a solution to this problem: Xbox fans can purchase a PlayStation
I’ll never forget the first time I fired up a PS5 game and it said “Microsoft Corporation” in the opening credits. I was afraid my PS5 would self-destruct. But, to my amazement, the PS5 still works.
So, with that said, at the end of the day, it’s quite ok that Sony games can be experienced—and adored—on an Xbox by a whole slew of drooling, malnourished gamers with the same love of console gaming that us PS5ers have. And, what better, more appropriate game is there to showcase on an Xbox than Sony’s juggernaut shooter where a team of heroes dive through hell and back to save the planet from big, nasty bugs?! 🐛 🪳 🐞 We’re doing God’s work here.
Welcome aboard, new recruits. And don’t forget to grab your AR-201L on your way in.
This fanboy stuff is so weak. Have fun playing your games and support others who want the same thing instead of lobbying for gatekeeping.
@Ainu20 I agree with you, mate. I do not think Sony would put it on GP for similar reasons you mentioned about Larian. My original comment was referring to Sammy's tidbit about why HD2 would have to be on GP. I misunderstood your question, sorry.
Nah. F*ck, xbox. Let them play Starfield.
But if they really really want it then we should get Fallout in return.
Otherwise f*ck xbox in the ear while Phil Spencer watches crying but aroused.
@truerbluer Yeah it looks weird. I never see Arrowhead & their community manager act this unprofessional with Helldivers 1.
Feels like they're super drunk with this big success and gave them the idea that they are bigger than Sony or can dictate Sony around.
@Major_Player NO
It’s a live service multiplayer game. How can there possibly be benefit to keeping it restricted to an in house ecosystem. I really really can’t see people saying ‘I’ll definitely get a ps5 over an Xbox because I don’t want to miss out on Helldivers.’
In fact - I find it quite strange it isn’t multi platform already tbh.
give it to them , it’s already on windows
@Psofo they can’t even afford more than one console so this “platform war” crap will never die
@Gunnerzaurus owning more than one console/platform is also a good thing
@Medic_alert I don't see Microsoft loosing money on Black OPs 6 being on Games Pass. As There is different ways for them to make money while it's on the service. The £30 vault bundle, micro transactions etc. Plus there is nothing stopping them buying it after a few months or later when heavily reduced.
Not gonna happen. It's Sonys IP so I don't know why they're saying it "could" happen. The only way it could happen is with a rebrand. That's like when From Software developed Demons Souls for PlayStation 3. From Software, at the time, didn't have a lot of confidence in that style of game so it was an experiment. Lo and behold, however, it took off but From Software couldn't port the game to the Xbox 360 because Sony then owned the IP, Sony took the gamble while Microsoft likely turned them down playing it safe (as tends to be the case) so, From Software sidestepped around Sony (kind of a jerk move if you ask me for a company that believed in your vision and brought it to fruition you would t have gotten any other way) and made Dark Souls. So, Arrowhead COULD do the same thing and reskin and change the title and keep the gameplay mechanics the same and do that and have a similar type of thing.
I say let them have it. Share the love! Then maybe we can have Halo and Gears…
@PaperAlien bcuz they(xbots) are dying and are more into whining on X, simping on phil instead of playing their games.
@arsmolinarc wasn't that their 'gAmE oF ThE gEnERAtIOn'? hahaha
@Frmknst didn't hurt Fortnite.
They should do it and push for Playstation Network like Xbox does for their titles and subsequently push the same on PC 🤭🤭 since 2 platforms have to sign in.
Sony didn't ask for Microsoft to put games on the Playstation so that doesn't mean Sony should put any of their games on Xbox.
Maybe Phil should have just made better decisions than buying up big companies and rather focus on making new ips or buying just a studio to make games, paying for it isn't on Sony to port any games over.
Also we don't need Gamepass on Playstation, don't want to be derided with that idea. Plus is fine as it is. Also what would that mean if Gamepass was on Playstation, Sony won't have a say in games etc and would have to pay something for the games being on the service on Playstation no doubt, we'll I imagine that's what will happen.
@UltimateOtaku91 That's such a childish way to look at Helldivers 2. It's a live service game that will do better on as many platforms as it can physically be on.
Removed - disrespecting others
@Frmknst What about them coming to PC and Switch already? Sony are already multi-platform.
And if you include MLB, they've made more games for Xbox than the other way round.
Removed - disrespecting others
Removed - flaming/arguing
Removed - disrespecting others
Sure they want it, they just dont want to pay for it
@PaperAlien
Because they STILL dont have any good games worth playing, lol
@__jamiie
Here, let me tell you something:
Out of the three manufacturers only one is on the way out of this industry, the same one that isn't doing what the other two are and is failing month after month to reach sales milestones for each product they own, be it console or subscription service.
Microsoft wants their titles to be multiplat? Their call, but they don't have the right to tell others to do the same, especially when it has been proven that the strategy the others are using, the same strategy that has been around since the inception of this industry, has been working well enough for them to outsell MS on a 2:1 basis monthly.
So yeah, MS chose the hill it wants to die, let it die there alone.
@Major_Player this would likely mean 30-50% of sales on PS would go to Microsoft. Gamepass will never be on PS. It won't live beyond the next 5 years unless Microsoft changes the model. Not sustainable and is becoming less appealing every year in terms of big day 1 releases.
It is not a way to bring revenue into studios that make AAA games that cost minimum $50 million to produce. Obviously the costs usually balloon.
@CielloArc Thanks for telling me something. I genuinely appreciate your knowledge.
Do you think there ever be PS7? I don't think there will. I think that we'll have a PC in a box made by numerous companies including Asus. The same way we have laptops and handhelds made now.
Sony is multi-platform right now. Stop crying about it.
But going back to your original point, Microsoft have the best business model. They sell software and make billions from it. Including from Sony and PlayStation gamers. Hardware is going to be as obsolete as the mini disc, UMD etc.
@Totheteeth because HD2 is in early access. They don't want to say it but it is. The game is far away from being feature complete and the price point they chose works in favour of that theory.
We are missing weapons and armor customization, vehicles, and vehicles customization and the game is still in heavy development with base mechanics having been tweaked and retweaked since it came out.
I suspect that by the time the galactic war sees its first conclusion and the community completes the story, talks between Sony and MS would have completed and HD2 will be released for xb. It will be Sony's Minecraft.
So, if ever, HD2 will be ready for xb by the time the story resets. So, not before 2026.
@ProfessorNiggle "Not sustainable" we been hearing that since GamePass launched 7 years ago....😂....and in another 5 years you will move the needle further up to another 5 years and so on and on.
@Major_Player if you're having to close multiple studios and layoff chunks of teams, then something you are doing isn't entirely sustainable. I like GamePass, I use it on my Series S. The fact that you used to be able to play big Xbox games day 1 on the lowest tier and now you can't shows you that everyone at Microsoft knows it isn't sustainable, hence the changes.
If you want to scream and call me a needle mover or whatever, do that, but just know I move on the side of reality.
