Xbox Fans Really Want a Port of PS5, PC Hit Helldivers 2 1

There’s often this recurring sentiment within the gaming industry that whatever strategy Xbox is following, Sony must follow it too. Many of you will recall, at the height of Game Pass’ popularity, PlayStation was put under intense pressure to replicate the business model or risk losing its market position. That hasn’t transpired, but now the Redmond firm has started porting its games to other platforms, many expect its Japanese rival to follow suit.

One story that’s been rumbling all year is that Helldivers 2, the fastest-selling PS Studios game in history, will be ported to the Xbox Series X|S. And a fresh wave of headlines this week has meant the story simply won’t go away.

Writing on the game’s Discord, and picked up by Eurogamer.net, one fan lamented the fact that he’ll “never” have reinforcements from his Xbox brethren. To which, developer Arrowhead’s community manager replied: “Who says [Helldivers 2] couldn’t [be ported to Xbox]? It’s not up to us but to Sony and Phil to duke out, but hypothetically speaking, if both partners think it would benefit them from a financial [and] brand standpoint, it could.”

To be honest, in an era where Sony is releasing LEGO Horizon Adventures day-and-date on Nintendo Switch, nothing would surprise us anymore.

But generally, we’re not overly convinced the Xbox market is big enough to justify the drama. While the game certainly would sell some copies on Xbox Series X|S, the console’s sales are in a bit of a slump – and ironically, the PlayStation maker would probably need a Game Pass deal to justify the conversion, which wouldn’t be a great look for PS5 and PC players.

Stranger things have happened, of course, but it’s unlikely.
