Hogwarts Legacy was always going to be big, set as it is, in the iconic Harry Potter universe. Last we heard, back in March, Warners Bros had shifted a magical 22 million copies since launch in 2023; that number is now over 30 million and counting, with a sequel considered a "very big priority".
Warner Bros. Games revealed the revised sum to Variety (thanks, VGChartz) and announced that the sequel would interact with the upcoming Harry Potter HBO series in some way. According to the publisher, Harry Potter fans, young and old alike, are still hungry for wizarding adventures, craving it on some deeper level: "Our insights tell us that there are not huge distinctions between a younger version of a fan and an older version of a fan. They’re just deep Harry Potter fans, and we try to build authentic experiences to delight them."

While this is good for them, I'm worried about the quality of things to come. I hope they don't just think people will buy anything if they slap the HP name to it. Hogwarts Legacy was okay (i say this as a fan), but there are so many thing that need improvements, mostly the story, characters and combat. The one thing they did nail though was the joy of exploration in the castle itself.
Yeah I'm in for a sequel, Hogwarts Legacy was great for exploration and the combat has some good base. But they should focus on smaller stakes, relations with classmates and the school theme. Hogwarts, Hogsmead, Forbidden Forest and the area surrounding it were great, but the south of the map was too big. I want Bully/Canes Canem Edit story vibes in my Harry Potter games, not worldending plots
Removed - unconstructive
I just want more of the same, with small improvements, in a sequel - its fine to want changes but they may end up ruining what was a winning formula.
I always thought they should have added year 2 as a vast content dlc and charged £40 for it.
And publishers tell us there is no interest or market for single player games anymore ...

I raised a similar comment yesterday to the one I am about to do so:
The outrage was over the top in my view as the game designers clearly added certain characters and plot points in direct contrast to the authors views, and the devs should have been supported for doing so.
The positive way the devs handled this was something I think that should have received far more attention.
I will of course support people who feel like they might want to be called this and that - but that is kind of it.
I don't want people to make irreversible choices nor do I want popular culture to cater to the 0,1 per cent all the time.
Therefore, it is a victory for humanity that cancel culture and their proponents failed so utterly and fantastically.
I listened to the podcasts about the Rowling-controversy and the criticism over her legimate concerns (both about irreversibility and about protecting biological sex) is often legitimate itself actually. But the campaign against this game created a severe backlash. 30 million copies are not rookie numbers.
30 million?! When the hell was the last time a game sold that well!? That’s insane! I never would have imagined this game would do so well, I guess I don’t have much faith in “licensed” titles, especially in the current game industry…
Great for the devs behind the game! People wishing for this to fail were always forgetting the real people behind making this who worked their butts off, they deserve this success and it shows that social media outcry is nothing to take seriously ❤️
@LavenderShroud Animal Crossing New Horizons released in 2020 and has sold 44 million copies. And it's only available on one format.
It is worth remembering that even after all the hubbub... gamers tend to buy the games they want. I got it on a deep sale, but sadly for it... I picked up Elden Ring at the same time. It was a no-brainer. HL was 'ok' ... well put together (so big thumbs up to the devs)... but I think I found the gameplay stilted and just not that interesting (I dropped off after only about 10 hours)... still installed, so I might try eventually (one day).
I'm just here for nessisonett's inevitable JK Rowling rant
@nicc83 Somebody I love killed themselves directly due to the hate perpetuated by Rowling and people like her 👍
Really hope we get a sequel I love this game so much it was pretty much the video game Wizarding World experience I always wanted. There were a few nitpicks like no quidditch and this might be a hot take but I do wish wish the school side of things was emphasized a little more and I do wish that we could outright choose to be good or bad. I wanted to do a playthrough as a complete a🐍🐍 hole evil Slytherin character but you can't really in a few side quests you can be a bit of a d**k but that's about it. Hopefully we see some of these improved in a sequel also hopefully we can transfer our characters from the first game
I wonder why they’re considering a sequel “a very big priority?”
@nessisonett I will reply in order of importance to your comment.
1. That is horrible and someone being driven to the edge by hatred and lack of acceptance should never be tolerated in our society.
2. I think separation from the art and the artist is possible and there a lot of amazing work that has been done by horrible people
Hogwarts Legacy has been extremely inclusive and clearly not in line with Rowling's views.
3. Sometimes you tend to be extremely confrontational and very unwilling to hear any opinion that is contrary to yours, that's why a lot of people tease you in the comment section.
I disagree quite frequently with you and think you're a bit extreme but that doesn't mean you're a bad person. Maybe you could give other people the benefit of the doubt too.
I don't have any problem giving my money to WB and Rowling if the next game is as good.
@LavenderShroud You are right it's very rare to sell this many, only around 25 titles have hit 30+ million units in the West. Mostly these are Nintendo, Rockstar and a few evergreen indies like Minecraft, Stardew Valley & Terraria or pack in titles like Wii Sports. Mario Bros. & Tetris. Super impressive.
Not shocking. Some IP sell on name alone. I haven't played the game so I won't say it's good or bad but I'm not overly shocked it sold well, though I didn't think Harry Potter was this popular.
@themightyant Not even Pokémon has managed that since Generation 1, so this makes it truly impressive.
As someone who enjoyed the game, I agree with the general sentiment that a sequel would be great if they increase the actual aspects of going to school. Can you imagine a whole Persona system where you build friendships and date at Hogwarts, and level up your stats by going to classes and preparing for your end-of-year exams?
Sadly, I feel it's more likely that WB will mandate to Avalanche that they focus on the safest aspects of the original: An open-world adventure, with way too much copy/paste tasks in the overworld.
@Pat_trick you've just been cancelled my friend 😆
The main story is a bit boring, but the game world itself is amazing, deserved
Story was forgettable but they nailed the castle exploration. Had a great time
