PS5 Pro finds itself in somewhat of a strange situation. The nature of the tech industry right now means it’s priced absurdly high at £700/$700, and while its jump is substantial, it lacks that obvious selling point of 1080p to 4K, which the PS4 Pro had.
System architect Mark Cerny smartly sold the system on its ability to blend the best of Quality and Performance modes in modern games; the console is built to deliver best-in-class visuals at 60fps.
And according to tech experts Digital Foundry, there’s a lot to like about what’s on offer here. “Based on the titles we’ve played so far with PS5 Pro support […] I do think that PS5 Pro does a much better job of enhancing current generation games than PS4 Pro did back in 2016,” Richard Leadbetter writes in his review.
Some of the PS5 Pro’s improvements are quite remarkable, and they lay the foundations for the PS6 moving forwards. Sony’s proprietary PSSR upscaler will almost certainly be iterated upon ahead of the next generation, enabling devs to resolve clean image quality with reduced computational overheads.
In some games, like Stellar Blade and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the results are described as “game changing” by Digital Foundry. Others are less immaculate, but the AI-based nature of the solution means it’ll only get better over time.
All of this is impressive stuff, and certainly more compelling than the PS4 Pro’s moderate resolution bumps at the time – but the appeal won’t be there for everyone, especially considering the price of the platform.
“Is there an actual need for a mid-generation console upgrade for the PS5?” ponders Leadbetter. “More to the point, do the undoubted improvements offered by the end product represent good value bearing in mind the expensive price point? All Digital Foundry can really do is attempt to showcase what the improvements actually are and offer our opinions on them. Beyond that, it's up to you. However, what’s clear is that beyond any shadow of a doubt, PS5 Pro is the most powerful, forward-looking games console on the market right now. If you want the best PlayStation experience, this is it.”

"However, what’s clear is that beyond any shadow of a doubt, PS5 Pro is the most powerful, forward-looking games console on the market right now."
As the most recent and most expensive console, that should be a given.
Mine has been dispatched and I'm looking forward to putting it through its paces tomorrow with FFVII, RE4 and F124, perhaps even a bit of The Last of Us 2
Once GoY, DS2 and GTA 6 come out I’m sure we’ll see plenty nay-sayers coming out the woodwork to pick one up, it’s a seemingly great piece of kit and seeing as we may not see a PS6 till 2028-2030, selling your PS5 towards one of these is a cost effective manner to experience the rest of this generation at it’s fullest imo.
And if you don’t agree and don’t want one; why are you reading this comment 😉
@GeeForce and yet it's not. Xbox Series X was technically the most powerful this gen but it wasn't forward thinking in its design, not as versatile with its architecture as PS5. This Pro is the first time we've seen a console released that is clearly on a progression path to the next generation.
I‘m quite surprised by Rich‘s comparison of PS4 Pro and PS5 Pro. The PS4 Pro brought a significant boost in CPU clocks AND GPU clocks, while the CPU boost of PS5 Pro is minor at best. And this CPU boost had great effects on the performance of CPU limited games like GoW and CoD Blops 6.
These were gains which the PS5 Pro will NOT facilitate. And the CPU limitation of the PS5 (Pro) is already real, especially for UE5 games.
Long story short: PS4 Pro could boost game performance where PS5 Pro can not. A game which can’t reach 60 fps on the base PS5 will not reach it on the Pro, if the graphics settings are not completely messed up by the devs in the first place.
We will remember the PS5 Pro as a console with an unimpressive boost, and the excitement will remain low.
@Max_the_German Who is "we"?
As long as we don't get any Pro exclusives I really don't mind sticking with my base PS5 because the pro just isn't something I can even think about affording now or anytime soon amazing performance boost or not
Cant wait to behave like a kid in a sweetshop tomorrow - 1 more sleep.
On a serious note, how much negativity can a (in my and others opinion, much needed) console option generate....
If you dont see the value, no ones telling you you have to buy it.
Honestly I'd like one but I'm broke and rent unfortunately comes 1st so does food ugh 😑
@riceNpea the Series X was very forward thinking for its design. Firstly it’s well built and the form factor is great. MS really innovated with its chipset. MS was banking on developers leveraging certain things. As a none lead platform, developers naturally focused on the PS. As if a game can run on the PS5, it can easily run on the series X which can brute force its way. Which is why the series x hasn’t seen comparable or better performance for the same titles the last few years. I remember when reviewers used to roast the Xbox one for it being so down on GPU power compared to the PS4 which was also a lead platform. Now the XSX being more powerful doesn’t matter. Obviously the series s is weaker but it’s just a matter of detuning the graphics. The pro is a mid generation refresh for a six plus year old SOC which is the base PS5.
Yea 8 plus years of tech can do that…
Analog 64 plays N64 games better than an N64 can 28 years later
@Max_the_German also, if I may... the PS4 Pro was $400, complete with disc drive.
@Vaako007
Dont a number of Xbox Studio games run better on PS5 too? (As well as a lot, but not all 3rd party games as you mention).
@ButterySmooth30FPS
“The royal we, ya know…the editorial.”
@TheDudeElDuderino gets it…
@riceNpea Why not? It has better VRR support, even now, after Sony implemented it on its console. It has better support for older games, because they can enance them without needing patches to be made by the developers (FPS Boost (sadly discontinued), AutoHDR), it has Quick Resume (which reportedly has issues with backwards copaible titles, but otherwise works well with new games). Smart Delivery was a good solution to the cross-gen release problem as long as the publisher supported it.
I think the way PS5 handles SSD memory is better, because it doesn't have to rely on approved manufacturers to develop expansion cards, it supports any SSD.
Of course none of that matters if the software on offer isn't very good, but if Xbox delivered the games, all of these hardware and OS features would be a great icing on the cake.
8 articles on Pushsquare about the PS5 Pro JUST TODAY. I hope they're getting paid from Sony by the article. 😂
Seriously, #ForThePayers
@Rich33
DPD have mine at their depo now about 15 miles up the road from me, so will definitely be with me tomorrow morning.
Just 1 more sleep.
Time to pack up the PS5 Slim and get ready.
@rjejr
I'll bet there will be at least 10 more tomorrow on launch day 😂
@OldGamer999
Mine is between 103 and 46 miles away, so I may need to wait a little longer
@Member_the_game
Not sure I need so many, even as an adopter of the new console, but I guess it is the biggest Playstation news at the moment so... what do you expect?
@symmetrian
Id expect nothing less..... in fairness I was just joking
I really would like to buy one, even had it preordered but cancelled that shortly after. My biggest issue isn‘t the price or the missing drive, I‘m 100% digital since PS4 Pro.
The only issue I have right now is the absence of games or even a line-up from sony. At the time PS4 Pro was released there were a ton of games coming for it.
The Pro Enhanced list sounds great, if you haven‘t gamed a lot lately. But if you have already played all interesting titles on that list, you ask yourself: Why the heck should I buy a 800€ console if there are no games to play on it..? I don‘t mind most of the third party releases, since they are ALWAYS either a) full of bugs b) have terrible performance c) released in a not so finished state or even all together. I need sony first party titles, because they are polished af, have always great performance, literally playable blockbusters and utilize the console capabilities to the fullest. THIS is gaming for me.
I‘m like really pissed because I really want one but what should I do with it?? I don‘t even know when the next sony game is coming, propably fall 2025 at the earliest with Ghost of Yotei? Wow, great.
For the love of god, I can not understand why they just don’t give us a little glimpse of what’s coming. Just a f*cking 30 seconds trailer with games specifically made for the Pro in mind. Nope not even that, just marketing with old games and oh you can play even older games you have played 223432 times even better. Like wth sony?!
They try everything to sell this garbage. Jesus! Just to see better lights and profundit and other small *****... yah is a little better.but just that. Im not buying. I stay with 2 ps5 slim and fat
@Vladspartan Geez, companies keep releasing smartphones that hardly offer much more than capable mid range phones. Yet people don't bat an eye when others go for high end phones. Or when they buy very expensive graphics cards, where the improvements are often just incremental. Which cost way more than these consoles. Just let people enjoy a better console if thats what they want.
@Cerny I do agree. Sony come on with a showcase already! Geez
This show dont tell method isnt really working for me. Now i understand them not wanting to show things too much ahead of time. But what happened to showing things like a year before. Maybe even a bit of a teaser for a game thats 2 years out. Something more than this atleast
@Member_the_game
This is how HZD looks on PS5 Pro
This is how GoW:R looks on PS5 Pro
This is how Spiderman 2 looks on PS5 Pro
😂
@LogicStrikesAgain 100% agree. Sony has like ~16 or 18 studios now, there is no way in hell that NO ONE besides Sucker Punch has anything ready to show. Even the „but games need longer development cycles!!“ excuse doesn‘t count much longer, with 16-18 first party studios you could expect 3 or even 4 new big games every year, so every studio has to release one big title every four to five years.
When is the 30th anniversary again, next month right? If they don‘t come up on that day with a big big showcase with at least 6 big major titles, sony is literally dead.
And I still don’t understand who the target audience for the Pro is supposed to be. Sony says it’s a console for enthusiasts. But who exactly are these enthusiasts? People who’ve been living in a cave since the PS4 release and haven’t played a single game since then? Enthusiasts aren’t playing PS4 games anymore; they want modern AAA games at the highest technical level. Enthusiasts have already played everything there is on the PS5. Who on earth is this console meant for?
Cerny wrote:
There’s a few problems with your maths here. Firstly you aren’t factoring in that some games fail in development, this has always been the case and can’t be predicted (e.g. before God of War 2018 Santa Monica were working on a Sci Fi game for years, or TLOU factions 2, etc.) Most of the time we don’t always hear about these, but it’s just part of the creative process and adds to development time.
Similarly game development doesn’t always go according to plan and a 4 year dev cycle, might turn into a 6 year one, especially for new IP, sequels are quicker and safer. Hence it’s hard to reliably space releases evenly if you are willing to let developers cook to make the best game they can, as Sony usually do. This leads to busier years and quieter years.
Third, they usually try and stack the lineups around the launch of a console so 2020, 2021 and 2022 were all pretty big years, but that might leave the years either side a bit quieter.
Lastly despite this Sony DO in fact typically release at least 3 new big games a year… they may not be the titles YOU want, and they may not all succeed, that’s just business, yet they typically do release at least 3 major titles a year. If games weren’t cancelled or delayed they would be aiming for 4-5+, but that’s not realistic. e.g.
Plus this isn’t factoring in second party/third party paid partnerships like Final Fantasy 7 rebirth, Stellar Blade, Helldivers 2, Rise of the Ronin, Lego Horizon all of which are 2024. Sony fill their gaps with these pretty well imho.
" If you want the best PlayStation experience, this is it."
Reductive statements like this still bother me and read like marketing copy. If the newest most expensive model wasn't the best experience something would be extremely wrong. The question isn't if it's better, it's if the difference relative to price is a reasonable difference.
@themightyant I agree, well explained!
Removed - flaming/arguing
i still feel like games were pushed back for the ps5 pro which is both good and bad , that they wanted games to be pro ready , and they had to be built to fully take advantage of it. so say you have a showcase in geared to selling ps5 pros thats where you show off a bunch of games including wolverine and a few others.
@Rich33
It’s happening.
Your parcel will be with you today between 10:52 and 11:52
@themightyant I know what you are trying to tell me but.. everyone knows, every studio works on at least two titles at the same time, so we are talking about like 40 games that are in the making since like forever now and they still can‘t show anything? How is insomniac able to have THAT level of output while all the other studios just do remasters and remakes if anything? Why is insomniac the only studio that‘s capable of showing a CGI trailer some years before the actual release? I‘m talking about wolverine.
@rjejr
Followed by a poll
"Did you buy a PS5 Pro" 🤣
@Cerny that’s not entirely true. A few of the larger studios work on multiple games at the same time but not most.
Additionally when they are working on multiple games most of these studios will have one in pre-production and the other in full production with most devs pulled to just one. Most of them aren’t working on them both evenly. When you include pre-production a lot of the dev cycles increase to 5, 6, 7+ years especially for new IP. Again remember some games fail at this stage.
Re: Insomniac I agree they are incredible in their output. But they are a statistical anomaly, almost no AAA studios of their size matches their output. As to “why”, that’s harder to answer for sure. I’d probably say that is because for about a decade they were rated as one of the best places to work in the USA on Sites like Glassdoor, and winning awards for this, which meant they didn’t lose much talent, that makes them more efficient. They were also one of the larger studios earlier, and typically make shorter games. (Which I think is a good thing on the whole)
As for Wolverine it is reportedly not coming out for at least another year and was way back announced in 2021. Is that really what we want, games announced 5+ years in advance? The reality is this trailer wasn’t mostly for us, it was a job recruitment advert, “come work on Marvel/X-men/Wolverine.
Lastly Sony have shifted strategy around announcements with games announced and released closer together. Astro bot for example was announced in May and launched in September. Ghost of Yotei was an inched last month and due next year. This is better imho then announce, delay, delay.
I get it, we all want more groundbreaking games from Sony, but at the end of the day making games is really hard.
@OldGamer999
Mines a bit later at around 2pm, but I will wish you happy gaming (and an essy set up) for a couple of hours time!
@Cerny
Re : Pro target audience
(Nb i write this fully agreeing with your sentiment that Sony need to start showing more games, earlier (even if just teases with rough ETAs)).
I would consider myself in that target audience - myself and partner play quite a lot of games - its not the only thing we do, by far, but whereas a lot of people would watch TV - we play games instead (our weekly TV time is very small indeed).
Think of Pro as the Netflix option that is 4k and no ads - a lot of people take this option to get the best experience they can, when they spend a fair amount of time watching it, or simply have the money, and its no big deal to them.
I have massive issues with Framerates - its practically locked 60fps or no sale, which is becoming more common now for many reasons including the way TVs work now, and i have the option firmly in mind of PC if Sony cannot live up to their new focus on performance modes (which includes pulling 3rd party out of the dark ages of sub 60fps). PC does have its drawbacks for me, but 60fps (with minor drops) is my Red line, so to speak.
Pro is aimed at people who game at 60fps, but want the better image quality - and we have seen a few games now where the current console gens now somewhat outdated GPUs have struggled to maintain 60fps with a good image (ie we have had either framerate or visual issues). Yes, we have also had an odd CPU bottleneck, but these really shouldnt happen as Sony 1st party and a few 3rd party games have proven, and I cant solve that without moving to PC.
We have also now seen the 1st example of a game that will be 30fps on base PS5 and 60fps on Pro due to use of UE5 - people say that base PS5 will always be the target but on PC a few games have now targetted rarer top end GPU's rather than mainstream common GPU's.
Like another commenter said, I also tend to replay (my favourite) games a fair bit, so I am buying Pro both to play the best console versions of new games, and games of the last few years.
In terms of price - its expensive sure, but its not expensive for what it is and I can afford it, and why should I wait 4 years for PS6. As lots of people have pointed out, many others regularly spend far more on a new phone / GPU / upgrading a car to a slightly newer model etc etc. I have no clue why people see this as any different, this is not the precedent of this scale of price in new tech, just consoles.
@themightyant Did you follow those insomniac leaks? There was a leaked picture with all games listed the sony studios are working on, EVERY studio worked at at least three (!) titles at the same time, including remasters and remakes. Naughty Dog‘s new „Sci-Fi-IP“ for instance is in development since 2019, no way they aren‘t ready to show at the very least an ingame cinematic trailer. All I (and a whole lot of others) want is a line-up to be excited about. If this means „here is a CGI trailer for a game that will be released in 3 years“ that is totally fine, because this is the way the gaming industry worked for decades. We have always got CGI trailers years in advance, this is standard procedure.
I really hope they purposedly hold back games for the pro, especially when you think about the „pro was planned five years ago“ and „now is the time to buy a PS5“ statements.
Edit: It seems like I‘m really not the target audience anymore, the second user here now said they enjoy going back to old games so they will buy the Pro. Matches perfectly with the marketing we got, if Pro means „retro gaming“ then I‘m absolutely not the target audience, as I really don‘t care about old games I have already played.
@Rich33
It’s just arrived, set up time now.
Good luck with yours.
@Cerny I can understand wanting Sony to reveal something, I really can, but I also know that development is not a straight line, and there is a wider strategy to when you announce games. They will do it when they are ready.
I haven’t seen the leaked document you speak of, because I don’t want to know what MIGHT be coming, because that is all subject to change. Plans move, games fail behind the scenes, and more. No point getting excited, or angry, over something that may never happen, much better to wait for an announcement than get exited over nothing.
But it doesn’t surprise me that they are working on multiple games, some will be in very early concept stages and they probably have schedules for the next 5-10 years. What’s the point? Should we know about these?
While I personally wish Sony would give us a little more, I absolutely don’t want them to give dates they can’t hit OR get in a mess like TLOU2 factions. Would be much better to only know about a game when it is guaranteed to come out and not be cancelled imho. Ultimately I trust the studios and creatives to know when THEY want to announce their game, it’s not an exact science, it’s ready when it’s ready.
But let me ask you this simple question. Do you honestly have a shortage of great games to play? Because my backlog is hundreds of games long. I feel ALL studios could stop making games for a couple of years and I’d still not get close to catching up. Perhaps you feel differently and have completed everything you want on PSN.
@OldGamer999 enjoy! Let us know how it goes so we can live vicariously through you. 😂
@themightyant
All set up running, only tried a couple of games each with different upgrade patch settings.
Tried the dragons dogma 2 trial and very impressed, lots of options, looks great, runs great and as smooth as butter.
Will buy this game now and on discount.
Console runs very quiet, doesn’t seem to get any hotter and seems well made.
The dam cardboard box was twice as thick as the PS Slim box though. 🤣
@OldGamer999 Premium cardboard FTW! Enjoy the Pro mate, happy for ya! 🎉
@Member_the_game Judging by the number of PS5 Pro articles so far today I think they'll hold off on that poll question until tomorrow. Though it is still early over here so maybe later, but it feels like a tomorrow question, gotta give the shoppers time. 😁
