Sony has announced by way of a new PS5 advert that the base PS5 Slim console will be available on sale at $380 until 24th December 2024. It hasn't confirmed on what date the temporary price cut will take place, though previous rumours have suggested 22nd November, or around Black Friday, is when the sale will be live. Currently retailing at $450, the sale knocks $70 off the asking price, and is expected to be available worldwide in local currencies.
Would you be tempted to upgrade to the PS5 Slim if you're still rocking the original mode, or pick one up for a family member or friend at this discounted price? Let us know in the comments below.

No mention of the physical model being discounted as well?
A great entry model for PlayStation 5. Perfect for beginners... 🥲
Perfect timing. I’ve been wanting to trade in my launch system for a slim because of space/storage
Still more than I paid for my Pro! Sorry, I just mentioned PS5 Pro because I wanted to be the first of many lol.
Although it has a little bit of extra storage, the lack of a built in disc drive would make it more of a downgrade rather than an upgrade for me
@Americansamurai1 There isn't a physical slim model. They're all digital, you have to buy the bluray separately.
It's still really expensive for this point of the generation, but that's sadly just the way the economy and tech in particular has gone.
Good to see the system discounted, and hope Sony can sell a lot of units over the holidays.
@Vega37 You’re thinking of the Pro. The slim comes in digital and physical. You can add a drive to the slim digital model, but there are definitely slims with the drive included. You can see them at every retailer and on Sony’s own website.
@Americansamurai1 Disc model is rumoured to be $425 and will include a bunch of Fortnite items.
@get2sammyb you would think they would bundle some of their first party titles, but fortnite is super popular.
@Americansamurai1 Yeah, I think Fortnite is just more universally appealing to more people on store shelves. Plus, it's probably cheaper for them to throw in some cosmetics than, say, Astro Bot. (Which they presumably hope people will buy with their new console.)
@Vega37 There are physical versions around with the discdrive included.
Smart business decision. Push people to digital and lock them in the PS Store and if they want a disc, they will make a tidy profit.
As a consumer, get physical. Better deals
Smart business by Sony, they already dominate this gen vs Xbox in terms of units sold, but cleverly timed deals at crucial times of year like the run up to Christmas will help them cement that even further.
It will also likely stop people just waiting to see if they can get a great deal on Black Friday. Sensible business all around.
Lol just reminds me again that they raised the price of the console after launch, which is just wild.
You can get a ps5 pro with a bundled disc drive on very, and get 20% off.
If I buy a slim can I take the disc drive and put it on my Pro?
They’re impossible to buy in the UK and I’d rather buy a whole a PS5 than fund a scalper.
@Lofty1985 Yes, you can.
@Americansamurai1 no. they want to phase out the physical SKU and stop distributing physical media beginning with the ps6. naturally, they are going to push the idea of digital distribution down our throats until that happens. also, there is a reason why the (optional) optical drives are in short supply and impossible to find... because sony wants them to be. people should brace themselves for the ps5 being the last stop of the physical era. eh, i can see the ps6 including an optional optical drive for the sake of backwards compatibility perhaps, but outside of super limited physical runs, i think the vast majority of ps6 games will be digital only.
“Would you be tempted to upgrade to the PS5 Slim if you're still rocking the original mode?”
How would this be an upgrade? (Serious question)
nope, not good enough. needs a permanent price drop and applied to ALL SKUs other than the pro. realistically, its going to be a few more years before people bite on the ps5 if they have been on the fence this long. and all that is dependent on some killer games coming out... i.e. the apparent problem isn't just the price.
@get2sammyb it does make sense especially since we saw how many people are still playing fortnite on PS4, might be time for them to upgrade. Gta6 will also bring a lot of ps4 users over next year.
@Porco True, I could see ps6 having an Optional drive but just one standard digital edition.
@Darude84 yeah that is an odd question, there's no reason whatsoever to buy the slim if you have the original, you're literally just throwing money away at that point
I absolutely detest those pricing strategies that are intended to create a false sense of urgency so people think "I must buy it now".
It will be back at that price in no time at all. Especially in Q1 when everyone is bankrupt after Christmas.
@carlos82 you reminded me of something.
I remember replacing my PS4 with.....another PS4. I also replaced my PS4 Pro with......another identical looking PS4 Pro.
In both cases this was due to internal revisions that resulted in significantly less fan noise.
So there are strange upgrades to be found in odd places, although I don't believe there is any benefit with the PS5 to the Slim, albeit using a bit less electricity.
I understand the decibels are about the same, as the lower power consumption is offset by less effective cooling? I'd have "upgraded" mine to a slim if they'd improved the PSU's and eliminated the coil whine though.....
Any chance of a Euro price drop or information?
@ChimpMasta I did upgrade my PS4 Pro from the launch model to TLOU2 edition but that looked nicer and as you said, was significantly quieter.
For PS5 there's no real difference for the consumer in any part of its design as far as I know
@ChimpMasta Not sure if the Slim uses any less electricity than the end-of-line fatty (1216?) as the internals are, from what I gathered, very similar apart from the 1TB storage compared to the 825GB on the Tub o' Lard.
I traded in my old Pro and, having been very disappointed with the PS5, bought a mint, end-2019 7200 series Pro (COD packaging) for £160 which is still very quiet.
Shoved a 1TB Crucial SSD inside and it still has pride of place under the TV unit in the lounge. PS5 has black plates and hides upstairs in the spare bedroom so as to not scare the locals.
Sony deleted and reuploaded the video but without the price cut.
It took 4 years to get a price cut of $20
Fred Meyer has confirmed the disc slim for $425
Digital Slim will be $380.
The lowest price they've been original price or not.
@Darude84 The Slim has 1 Tb of memory. The OG PS5 had 825 Gb. I guess that is an upgrade.
@sanderson72 Ah mate sorry I may have been mistake for DF reviewing the new Xbox models? Think maybe they draw less power?
Last year the original PS5 with disc drive was discounted to $400 and came bundled with Spider Man 2. Seems this year's deal is quite a bit worse. While the PS5 is surely a luxury item, it's just another data point that shows inflation is still rampant.
@ChimpMasta ironically when DF tested power draw of their base model, slim and Pro, Richard found that his slim model was using 10-20w more than the base model 😂 although this is likely an isolated case with his unit. Power draw is meant to be the same across both models and they use the same size silicon.
@ChimpMasta @Loamy
RE Power Consumption.
PS5 Launch - 7nm Chip
PS5 Slim - 6nm Chip
So, all other things being equal the slim should have a smaller Power consumption (the real world difference would be tiny though).
Rich from DF, as you said Loamy, did find his Slim was drawing more power than his launch, and was surprised at this - he sort of put it down to his slim having lower quality Silicon, whilst talking about variability of individual units.
PS5 PRO - this used more power as you would expect, but no where near what it should have done - around 240 W max, whereas I think Oliver said he would have expected 300 W, leading to a short discussion as to how Sony have acheived this and a thought it might be using an efficient 4 or 5nm chip. I dont have a smart meter, so have no real idea, but Pro seems to generate less heat than my launch model.
@Deoxyr1bose yes... stop the press... the console that was originally USD399 is now USD379. My God... what a time to be alive; and I'm so happy that I can share this moment with my children.
Interesting that the physical edition is seemingly not discounted. Maybe because the've literally (from what I see in shops) stopped selling detachable drives alltogether.
Finally @LiamCroft - why would anyone swap their OG PS5 for a slim? Why for the love of God?!?!
@Deoxyr1bose Yet in about a year they'd RAISED the price by £30, for all regions apart from their home country of the USA.
Claimed exchange rates for the hike yet they've still not lowered it by £30 since the rates have become more favourable.
Profiteering bar stewards.
Also, why get a new slim without disc drive when you can get a reconditioned fatty with disc drive direct from Sony for virtually the same money?
@Rich33 thanks! I had no idea the slim slimmed down the chip! Sony have clearly put a lot of effort into the efficiency of the Pro as well. I was impressed by the numbers I was getting in heavy games.
@Loamy
Yeah, my guess (if it is the case) is that its down to:
A) sony not wanting any headlines about power useage - silly, i know, given the power draw from PCs but you know how some just want any excuse to rage at it!
B) They needed to keep the heat levels down so they could keep it pretty small, without needing a more expensive / louder cooling system than what they used. (It sort of backfired with cover size / not fitting headlines but my current thoughts, again all guesswork, are that this is due to a bigger curvature for more air flow).
