The PlayStation Portal is perhaps Sony's most unlikely success in recent memory. Since one joined the family, we can certainly attest to spending even more time playing games. A year after launch, the PS Portal received a game-changing cloud streaming update, and Sony says that loyal users should expect more surprises to come in the future.
In an expansive interview with Stephen Totilo's Game File (thanks, PSLS), Sony's VP of product management, Hiromi Wakai, said additional features will be coming, just slowly, to deliver the best possible experience: "PS Portal was a new type of product for us, so we wanted to be extra careful to ensure our users get the best possible user experience. We want to continue that approach with PS Portal, and make incremental steps based on community reception."
Elsewhere in the interview, Wakai said that PS Portal owners were deeply engaged and inclined to spend more time gaming overall, a feedback loop the company is surely taking note of for future console generations.
If you did pick up a PS Portal, do you feel like your total game time has gone up noticeably? What do you think of the Portal's new Cloud Streaming feature, and what are you hoping to see in the future? Let us know in the comments section below.

I'm pretty sure the recent "fix" for the too loud base volume was Sony either realizing they sold enough of those proprietary earbuds or Sony realizing they weren't going to sell enough of those proprietary earbuds. The lowest volume was way too loud.
Still, love it. I just want to play PS3 games on it, please.
If they let me stream the PS3 catalogue. This will become even more used than it is now
I beat 6 games last year. I beat 32 games and DLC this year with a large amount of that time spent on the Portal. It’s changed my gaming habits significantly.
I’m hoping that they can expand the streaming feature, by eventually adding all of the PS+ catalog, as well as all games in our digital library that are purchased as well. I know that we are still a far distance from having every single purchase be streamable, as even PS5 doesn’t do all games, but if you tell me that anything I buy in the digital store can be cloud streamed to my Portal, then I will have to fully covert to an all digital library. As for now, I prefer to buy my big games on physical disc but having the ability to stream to the Portal would change my spending habits considerably.
How’s that for a motivation, Sony? Get it working!
I own it and it has helped me keep playing in situations where I wouldn’t have been able to. For the price and what it does, it’s been worth it for me.
I’m not sure what else people expect it to do, though. There isn’t any dedicated hardware or storage. It isn’t a standalone device, so I don’t know where else it goes from here. It’s doing what I would expect it to do.
I WOULD like to see a new dedicated handheld from Sony, though. Something with decent power, and devs can make games within those specs to let them release games that are fully playable on PS5 as well as the handheld itself. No need to split or create a new eco system, just a “portable PlayStation” experience.
Make no internet connection with ps5 possible ( like ps4 - vita )
@PlushiePlushie This! I don't even know why this isn't a thing yet.
Sony should synchronise video and audio - by reducing the audio lag, not increasing the video lag.
Being able to play my PS5 games at work has been a gamechanger. I work nights so I have a lot of downtime. It's absurd how well it works on our Wi-Fi.
So whenever I read articles about the ps portal it's always a positive vibe I get. Sony seem to be supporting it well because I rarely ever read anything too bad about lack of support etc so when I see a term such as "glacial" attached to an article about the portal it conjures up feelings of cold,barren,desolate landscapes..a far cry from the warm,positive feelings that the majority of ps portal adoptees are exhibiting.
@Northern_munkey i tried my friends one at my workplace and it wouldn't even connect to his PS5 and qhen it eventually did the next day it was terrible. It made me cancel my 30th anniversary one i had pre ordered. I didnt want to take the chance on it playing as badly at home as it did at work as i lose connection or quality in the bedroom when playing remote play to my phone. Kind of wish id got it still as i could have made my money back on it either way. I will wait until they bring a device out where i can preloaded games on to the HDD. Streaming just isnt there for me atm.
Being able to stream any games we own would be amazing, hopefully that's next.
@LordGlarc Same. I work nights and it's one of those "80-90% calm, 10-20% EVERYTHING IS ON FIRE!!!" jobs, so it's nice. I don't play it nearly as much as my coworkers play on their phones, so I feel fine about it.
Only bought it to use in the house. 100s of hours, it's never missed a step for us and has given us everything we want. Frontend to make it easier to switch accounts would be appreciated, but other than that it's doing exactly what we bought it for...
Streaming games works really well, but I hate that the game immediately closes when you put the device to sleep. It would be ideal if I could just continue from where I left it.
More games on the streaming catalogue would be good
Wow. Even though Portal found the market Sony was looking for you guys are still negative. Glacial? Really? Is there a need for that?
They are testing things slowly I get that but I only see positive things from people that saw beyond the negative press and went "that's a neat device that lets me play more".
That said, more streaming of games please!
@PlushiePlushie I think we will see this in 2025 and would be a perfect addition to the Portal. Then, hopefully, we will see more PS3 games added to the service.
It's so good that the product has succeeded and so they're adding features.
It's just a shame that shortsighted design meant they tried to save money on storage and bluetooth headphone compatability, something you cant patch in.
@premko1 you mean local play?
Don't think it's possible but I really wish it had Bluetooth connectivity for headphones/earbuds. But it's a lovely piece of kit
Definitely I've been playing a lot more. And with the cloud service even more. Great feature if you have the highest tier of ps plus
It's just made gaming more accessible to me due to family using the TV when I want to game. Real good little device!
I recently got a nice recliner I've wanted for years in my living room. It is of course positioned perfectly center in front of the TV. My PS5 is in the bedroom. To solve this terrible circumstance, I got the Portal on a whim and now I enjoy Football on the weekends and can continue my silly gaming hobby all from the comfort of my recliner. All in all I'm enjoying the Portal. I would still prefer a device to device stream like the Vita did with PS4, but this will do for now.
As a day one owner of the Portal I’m loving the continuous support. I really expected it to just be a way to play when my kids wanted the tv and it’s slowly becoming more. Love the game streaming, works perfectly for me every time I’ve used it.
features keep rolling ;D
hope they work on the interface aswell~ UI needs improvements and polishment
Add universal blutooth support!!!
@LikelySatan I must be going deaf then as I have the earbuds and always find them too quiet with my portal. I want louder settings...
@colt45z I wish, this would have saved me from buying the mediocre sony earbuds and allowed me to use one of the several pairs of good earbuds I have laying around.
Ill also note that there is no apparent advantage to the earbuds either, all that latency crap is utter nonsense. The sony ones are not even noise cancelling.
@Titntin Same with me, its a house only device and with my internet being solid, its never had an issue regardless of where I am in the home. I love the portal way more than I ever thought I would.
I hope the next update is to allow the PS3 games on PS+ to be played on it.
I wonder if they can improve the picture more, foliage everywhere like in Avatar often struggles to resolve in the middle distance. When you get into the man made structures no problem but the nature is hard to tame
Going to be away at a trade show In Manchester in a couple of weeks, then visiting my brother in San Francisco a couple of weeks after that. In those situations it’s perfect, with streaming working flawlessly every time I’ve tried.
Love my portal, just need Sony to let me direct tether to my PS5. With the amount of devices running on our Internet it gets really congested at times.
At least it's getting updated they just let the vita wither and die
@premko1 just over LAN would be great!
I bought one soon after it came out even though I didn't really have much cause to use it....then I started spending more time at my girlfriend's house and it really came into its own....been around to family members houses and can play it there too, totally worth it for me and it's kind of become essential for me to while away those obligatory christmas holiday appearances
@Runex2121 Seemed like a really idiotic expense after I bought their 3D ear cans. But Sony has been twisting arms this gen. They think their Apple now. Next Portal will have a glass back.
Anyway, that's not what I meant
The lowest volume without earbuds. As in, too loud playing in bed next to wife? $200 please. 100% why they did that.
I just want a direct connection from the Portal to the PS5 when I'm at home, is that too much to ask????
What is left for the PS Portal to glacially improve?
Maybe you are thinking of the games that are available for streaming?
The only other thing I can think of is accessories that improve or change it capabilities.
Meanwhile, Nintendo is very much glacial about introducing their next big thing. As someone who will NOT get one, even I am impatient to learn more and get some facts on the table. I think the reveal will be in the end of January/start February.
@FuzzieGinge88 The problem with direct connection is that Sony can’t guarantee that all users will still have internet connection. I know, assuming that WiFi and Ethernet of the PS5 work independently, people with wired internet will have no issue. But this is a story Sony probably doesn’t want to tell, because it is too complex (in the eyes of Sony).
Or WiFi and Ethernet CANNOT operate independently, because of hardware limitations, I don’t know.
Long story short: Sony could implement it, but it would make the story much more complex („no internet connection guaranteed, within a range of x metres of your PS5“), while implementation would take a lot of effort. And for Sony, PSN access is of MOST importance business wise!
I don't want a streaming device. Heck, I don't even want digital. My wifi went out on me and my PS consoles were unusable. But if it's between digital and streaming, I'll take digital only over streaming any day. Today's internet still isnt ready for streaming. The tech. Is still behind
Had the portal at launch, unfortunately it was laggy as hell to the point it was unplayable. I sold it on regrettably. My WiFi just wasn't up to to it, tried all sorts. Contacted Sky but they couldn't do anything.
@ProfessorNiggle remote play locally using ps4 ` s wifi
@Max_the_German Still far better than laggy internet connection
@premko1 And I fully agree.
I haven't got a portal yet (and may not do) but as a father, I definitely have played more games since getting the Steam deck, so can see why the portal has become so popular
@premko1 I see what you mean now. And especially with that PS Link technology they’ve been pushing, if it wasn’t half baked that should’ve allowed you to do that. Maybe it comes with the next gen PS Portal
Fantastic device. Has allowed me beat so many games I'd otherwise still be playing 😄
@PlushiePlushie i don't see why they can't do that since ps3 games are streamable. i could see them doing that. if they do i'd hard consider getting one.
Please resolve the issue where the 'Accessibility - Customize Button Assign' is not applied!
@PlushiePlushie Agree, I would love to play Oblivion on the Portal, this is a game that never had a handheld version and the PC version doesn't officially support controllers so you have to mod it a lot to get it playable on the Steamdeck for example.
