One of the biggest surprises of The Game Awards is that veteran game director Hideki Kamiya has reunited with Capcom to create an Okami sequel under the umbrella of a new studio named CLOVERS.
Those of you with strong memories will recall Clover Studio from the PS2 era, an outrageously successfully subsidiary which created all-time classics like God Hand and Viewtiful Joe.
Kamiya would eventually move to PlatinumGames where he directed favourites like Bayonetta, before departing last year.
In a letter about his return, Kamiya expressed that his “body is filled with both a cautious surprise that this is not a dream and a joy that cannot be described in words”.
He continued rather poetically: “Like a strong rising sun, [Okami’s sequel] is finally in motion. But it’s still a small bud that is blossoming. We are ready to fill this new Okami with many colourful flowers, and to do our best to fulfil the promise of ‘next time’ in the best way.”
So, it sounds like we won’t be seeing or certainly playing the next Okami for quite some time, but the fact that Kamiya has returned to Capcom to continue work on this franchise is a truly unexpected announcement. We can’t wait to see where this leads.

Congrats to Kamiya. It sucks he had to wait until Capcom went full Disney ready to greenlight anything recognizable to get it made though.
The first game was superb.
Zelda style adventure with amazing graphics and innovative gameplay
As a fan of this game, I can’t describe my joy too for the sequel. Can’t wait for it 😆😆
Did not expect this at all, but its a very welcome surprise!
Loved the art design of the first one, i can only imagine how beautiful a sequel might be.
Please don't be too long. The exploration in okami was so good. Imagining a sequel in this generation has me so hyped
@Enuo Well because I doubt anyone at Capcom was really pushing for a new Okami and considering Capcoms reputation pre-RE7, I doubt anyone would have trusted them with a new Okami.
I'm ashamed to say that I've never played Okami. But I think now is the time to finally give it a go
I’m beyond excited. I really hope this turns out well!
Also I'd love to see more games and sequels get given a chance. As was mentioned a few times, games used to be made by people for the players. Would be nice to see that come back. I'm sure if a game os made with love and ends up being good it will get an audience
I would love to see Clover giving a chance to create Devil May Cry 6! I would definitely feel relief if that happened since Hideaki Itsuno is no longer at Capcom! 😀
I love Okami so I'm still shocked we're getting a sequel after all these years. I never expected it.
The last time that I was THIS emotional over a game announcement is FF7R.
He even resurrected his old studio for this game. Man...😭
@Batesy125s Oh yes, the game barely aged due to its aesthetics and outstanding gameplay design. It's often on sale across different platforms too.
My experience with Okami is weird. It's one of those game that "everyone loves it but i never finish it".
I've played it on PS2 from my friend copy, got jaw dropped with the beautiful art style, quite enjoyed the gameplay but somehow i never finish the game. At some point, i felt the story pace kinda too slow for my taste. Not to mention the weird mumble voice acting always made me sleepy lol.
Then i got the HD version for PS3, got jaw dropped again, but i also didn't finish the game. I think i stopped playing after i've done with some early side quest.
Now i'm thinking to get the PS4 version but i fear i'm not gonna finish the game again lol.
My only genuine complaint about this game from the PS2 original was that it was too long - it felt like it could have been about half the length. I hope the sequel focuses on quality rather than quantity.
It was a great moment. I imagine it was very full circle for a lot of people at Capcom. Great to see them killing it again. Warms my heart.
Looks like those bridges have been mended which is absolutely wonderful like I don't know what to say not only this but we're getting A BRAND NEW ONIMUSHA as well word cannot describe how happy I am😭😭😭😭. I was overjoyed to see Ammy and Samanosuke in Astro Bot a few months ago and now a new game in each series it's just unreal ^__^
N.i.c.e. onimusha is going to be amazing as well.cant wait.word up son
Getting Amaterasu in Astro Bot was one of my favourite moments of the year, and this announcement caps it off. Cannot wait!
Just please don't open this one with a 20 minute cutscene that you can't skip, ta.
1 year after finishing Okami 2, Kamiya will leave Clovers due to clash with other devs and open a new studio named "Platinums"
Definitely the best surprise in TGA for me. I still cannot believe Okami is back with Kamiya in helm again. Can't wait.
One of the most exciting game announcements in, like, a decade for me. I really can’t wait to see what a more powerful system offers in a sequel. As soon as the trailer started I cocked a leg and peed, before rolling a bomb into a cliff in excitement.
Wasn't a fan of the original. That said, now that Zelda has gone open world, there's even more space for a game in the style of the older entries in this day and age.
We are just as happy Kamiya! And after Okami, maybe a return to DMC and or Viewtiful Joe?🤞🏽
@JustCameHereToSay I don't have problem with the difficulty. It's just, i quite enjoyed and try to finish the game but somehow i got bored and stop playing.
Maybe i will try it again with PS4 version...
@JustCameHereToSay How long your playthrough with guide? I'll probably gonna use guide from gamefaqs if i get the PS4 version.
Capcom is making the right choices these days. That Monster Hunter and resident evil money is being put to good use.
@PorkChopExpress I was thinking the same. Imagine if Konami somehow got their sh*t together?
Hopefully after Okami 2 is successful we can get another Viewtiful Joe.
Is that a star, no! To us, in a lonely manger okami 2 has been born. A Christmas miracle!
I'll see myself out
@PuppetMaster it does drag a bit at points to be fair
Never played this but seems like it's a good game is it still worth playing these days? just wondering is the okami hd version any good worth getting?
@Decimateh-xblz Absolutely. Its remastered version is often on sale on different platforms.
The game barely ages due to its unique gameplay mechanics, timeless art and endearing characters.
@puddinggirl thanks for replying 🙂 saw an article about it think was when that path of goddess came out saying was good like. Saw this n reminded me to check it n it's 75% off on Xbox rn guess IL buy it then 🙂 thnx
Great to hear that we are getting an Okami Sequel and that Kamiya returned to Capcom. I hope it ends up great and I believe it will.
Looking forward to it! Okami is such a gem
@Batesy125s PS4 remaster is available, even on disc!
@JustCameHereToSay I see. I just ordered a secondhand Okami PS4 and i'll probably gonna follow your way to finish the game.
@rusty82 Yeah, it feels a bit dragging but i will give the game another try.
I'm gonna play Okami in the new year, I've only heard amazing things about it, and excited for a sequel as well
