Update #2 []: Well, with any luck, we're through the worst of it. Grinding Gear Games has managed to get the Path of Exile 2 servers sorted — for the most part — which means that while queues are still prevalent, a lot of players are actually getting into the game itself. And, most importantly, they're staying connected.
Now we just have to hope that things continue to improve over the coming hours and days.
Update #1 []: Well, developer Grinding Gear Games said this might happen, and it's happening: Path of Exile 2's servers are being pummeled into submission by hundreds of thousands of players.
The action RPG's early access period began roughly one hour and 30 minutes from the time of writing this update, and the vast, vast majority of its players have been stuck in queues this entire time. Some players are also being hit with error messages saying that servers are undergoing maintenance.
To be clear, things are moving, and Grinding Gear Games will be doing everything it can to make the process as smooth as possible. Again, these server woes always seemed like an inevitability, given the sheer amount of interest in Path of Exile 2.
Even those making it into the actual game are being met with connection problems right now — so here's hoping that everything evens out over the course of the weekend.
In the meantime, you can keep up to date with our Path of Exile 2 guide on server queues and login issues:
Original Story: Path of Exile 2 launches in early access later today on PS5, but honestly, you'll need to check your expectations if you've made plans to binge on the action RPG all weekend.
Basically, this highly anticipated sequel is going to be a juggernaut. Through the night, developer Grinding Gear Games confirmed that the title has already reached 1 million early access redemptions. In other words, the servers are going to be absolutely slammed from minute one.
"Obviously this is great news, but it also comes with some downsides," director Jonathan Rogers admits in a rather candid video message. "There are probably going to be some queues during the launch weekend."
"We really didn't expect to have more than one million people online at the same time," Rogers continues, before explaining that additional servers have been put in place to try and help deal with the load.
"I do have some concerns about issues with the backend. We quite frankly don't know what out backend services are going to be able to handle as we go above a million users."
The team's going to "scale everything we have as far as it can go", but really, it sounds like Rogers is warning everyone that things could get rough. "We're really not sure what kind of limits we might hit," he concludes.
It's worth mentioning that the queues are already out of control. Thousands were getting in line to play Path of Exile 2 this morning — something like 12 hours ahead of release — and that number's only going to grow as launch creeps closer, with more and more people getting home from school and work later in the day.

I had such a blast playing PoE and I never even really engaged with the endgame. The lore and world for this series is super underrated.
Don't think I'll cough up $30 just to beta-test the game, but I'm very excited to play 1.0 when it comes out. Looks effin phenomenal!
Free on release.
30$ for early access.
I somehow ended up in the upside down world.
@Dalamar It's supporting devs at the end of the day. An enormous amount of work has been put in to this sequel, and giving something back to help test it before it's official release is something a lot of people clearly want to do.
I have early access on Xbox so I am looking forward to spending the evening playing GT7 on my PS5 while i am stuck waiting to get in.
Pretty insane though for GGG and a good problem for them to have (Tencent will be pretty happy with their investment too & the hands off let GGG cook approach they took.)
The brutal clear and to the point honestly in that video from the Dev is very refreshing. I shell try to play tonight but i'm not expecting too.
@Dalamar To be fair they give you $30 worth of currency with it. This is also supporting and helping the devs as well, they aren't some big publisher they're a small indie dev and they also publishing the game themselves. If you don't want to pay then wait that is an option.
@DennisReynolds Agreed. It’s nice to see blunt and to the point communications from the devs about this stuff rather than a heap of marketing speak. If I didn’t have so much on the go at the moment I would probably get early access but I won’t get round to playing it till it’s free anyway
It's not the full game, so I'm not in a rush to pay 30 bucks to wait. I'm Patient.
@DennisReynolds when did this become the narrative to support free to play developers, but we also lambast developers who do charge. They've made more money with microtransactions than they would have for a paid game. But it's also early access, so this isn't a big deal, nor a foreign practice on any level.
@DennisReynolds you might want to check about the small indie dev part.
However I do agree that GGG are one of the most upfront & forthcoming dev teams out there.
I mean a couple or so weeks back they had to do some work on the poe account system to get them to work with POE 2.
First attempt didn't work & they had to roll back the patches & within 4 hours had a detailed break down of what occured & what went wrong on their forums.
I have known many companies take longer than that to acknowledge an issue let alone put out a statement.
Yeah, figured that one as soon as I red the first sentence of their post.
Understandable but "bummer" still...
Normally I'm calm and rational, but where is that entitled, irrational part of my personality?? Oh wait! There it is!
If I don't get to play this game today at exactly 11AM PST, I'll throw my console out of the window, wedge my controller into my TV screen with velocity, flip the coffee table upside down, burn my house and the neighbors houses down, get into an altercation with the local law enforcement agencies, come online to rant and rave about how unfair the world and life is, and end it all with a sincere "GGs".
Alternatively, I'm looking forward to playing this game today and hope that I don't have to wait long.
For a second, I thought the game was running on Blizzard's servers, cause every time they release a game, there's always server issues lol.
Jokes aside, I hope the game is good and it sounds like it'll be a big success for the devs.
Definitely expected this, soured but I'm also glad for their success being one of the last few really transparent studio that connects with their players.
Here we are an hour and change past the expected launch time and the servers are down for "last minute maintenance". While I can appreciate that this is being done to try to ensure that the maximum number of players can login without issue, I can't help but feel like this will cause more issues, as the people that would have held off logging in exactly at 11AM PST due to the predicted rush, are also now probably trying to login with the rest of us, creating a bigger queue, which I don't think is going to help.
It's almost as if the devs are competing for the worst game launch of 2024 at this point with this "Servers go live in 5, 4, 3, 2, wait no only joking, they're going to be offline for an extended and undefined period of time while we do some updates" approach.
@ZeroSum D4 was down for 12 hours at launch, chill .... It's only just under 2 hours late for PoE2 so far. WE all knew this would happen with over 1 million people login at the same time.
Fun fact 500 watching D4 on twitch now, and over 1 million watching PoE2...
I log in and go afk to get the proper £30 experience
@Zeke68 And they're not even watching the game, they're watching people try to log in.
@Zeke68 I am chill. Incredibly so. Aside from being satirical because we all know a sizeable chunk of gamers are going to react irrationally, I've been playing other things. Did I hope for a smooth launch at 11AM PST as advertised? Yes. Am I surprised at the lack of launch at 11AM? No.
The 1 million watching PoE2 on Twitch right now are the 1 million that can't login! 😂
PoE 2 veteran now.
I managed 60 seconds of game play before this last server config fix
Having fun sitting in a stream & this was expected.
@ZeroSum True rofl
@ShogunRok I played for 2 minutes. Got a warrior named and killed like 10 zombies weeee
@ZeroSum And sorry if I gave impression YOU had to chill, I just meant people in general
Idling tapping X when all of a sudden the "Contacting server" message didn't instantly vanish, instead it stayed on screen for 3 seconds before vanishing and giving the "an unexpected disconnection occured" message in the bottom left. 3 seconds... Just long enough to build up some hope!
Well I guess now we riot! Time to flip the coffee table, wedge the controller in the TV, defenestrate the console and set the house on fire!
Long queues but servers up now (again)
@ZeroSum Instructions unclear, defenestrated the house, set the controller on fire and wedged cat into tv.
Well this go around I managed to get a club & shield plus level up before servers were taken offline so I basically beat it already right?
Also just as an fyi the servers are not crumbling they are being taken down deliberately to stop database errors getting to a point they would crash the servers. No unexpected crash has occurred yet. At least according to GGG tweets
I can't even queue haha. Hopefully tomorrow i will get in.
"There are 9201 people ahead of you in the queue" and at least one of them is likely @riceNpea afk!
If the queue continues to shrink at its current rate of roughly 6 per second, I should be able to login in around 22 minutes.
Fair statement form GGG, no bs given. Kudos for that, it is seldom in the gaming industry.
Just jumped in for 20min while the kid was in the shower. No wait time, solid and polished first impression - and harder than I expected!
I think this is gonna be a big hit…
And to those scoffing at a $30 beta: it’s fun, it seems to be solid for a beta, and it supports great devs. I see no big deal here…
I’d rather this than $90 for a AAA game that claims to be 1.0 and is, in fact, a buggy and unfinished mess. At least here I know it’s a WIP.
Anyway, once the kid is in bed, I’m diving in fully! Have fun, everyone!
@DennisReynolds Grinding Gear Games is owned by Tencent, by the way. They were bought out back in 2018.
I got in about 2 hours late, not that big of a deal.
Tho im suffering from a huge input lag, its kinda ok if i play warrior, but sorceress is absolutelly unplayable. Good half a second input lag to any action.
Hope its just server load issues, as my friend is completely fine for some reason :/
@Frmknst Yet theres people that pay 90$ (and more!) for games like SW: Outlaws, which was in worse state than most betas at lauch.
People actually want to support honest and community driven devs, go figure!
I'm going to try it out but only when it's free, I'll let the people paying to test the game iron out all the bugs for me first
@species i had the same issue. You have to change the server selection from auto to manual in the main menu settings.
@Donni-Brasco Thank you, its all gone now. The gameplay is buttery smooth
