PlayStation is 30 years old this week, if you can believe such a thing, and so celebrations are in order. The company's just released a 'Thank You' video through its official channels, taking fans on a breakneck tour of some beloved games.
Interestingly, most of the titles that show up in this montage are fairly new, but a handful of classics make the cut as well.
The footage is overlayed with some choice words, alluding to the scope of PlayStation as a platform. Everything from "love", "friendship", and "family", to "justice", "fear", and "infamy" is referenced here, with select games tied to each theme.
What do you make of this video? Are any of your favourite PlayStation games highlighted? Try not to get too soppy in the comments section below.

A thank you video, wow. How about a couple of extra games, or even some playstation store credit.
@BeerMonster "give me free stuff"
That has got me emotional. 30 years! I remember getting a PS1 with wipEout and am just thinking back to all the hundreds of games played and hours of joy between then and now.
Here's to the next 30!
For anyone curious with the song, it's Dreams by The Cranberries (RIP Dolores 🙏). I put the official link if anyone interested to hear the full song.

OT. I'm 40 years old and Playstation has been in my life for 30 years, gave me plenty of memorable gaming experiences.
So, i just wanna say..thank you Playstation. Cheers for another 30 years 🍻
That video gave me the chills as there are so many memories there from my younger years. Congrats PlayStation on 30 year 🎉
Thank you for your £700 for our mild upgrade console, suckers!!
How about they thank us by having a showcase
@PuppetMaster 99% correct. This is the trailerized (sic) mix/cover version which is a little more ethereal.

Aww that's lovely, now get the PSSR sorted oot.
Ending the video with Bloodborne and saying “It’s About Persistence”, surely a 60FPS update, Remake or Sequel its inevitable at this point
I ... wanted to see a split second of Castlevania Symphony of the Night on the PS1 "It's about Legacy"
When I was 14 I worked two weeks on a Christmas Tree farm in the rain in July to save enough money for a PS1.
As soon as I had the money I quit, got a lift in to Dun Laoghaire to Electronics Boutique to grab a PS1, RE2 and FF VII. I can still remember lifting each of them off the shelf.
That was a good summer.
@BeerMonster There's always a freeloader
@Logonogo That's right, if you want to thank me for spending tens of thousands of pounds on your product over the years, then give me something, not a patronising video that probably took all of ten minutes to make.
@BiosNova See my previous comment
This was excellent, emotive, transcending the corporate materialism and getting to what gaming is all about!
That split second MGS4 and Bloodborne tease at the end tho. Damn, Sony really need to do something about their "legacy"
It’s a very nice video! If they don't do something of a showcase to compliment this occasion then i don't know what to tell ya
1:53 looks interesting. What is that? Sony seems to keep it secret.
I was slightly late to the party (I got mine aged 7 in 1998) but I remember going to a friend's and playing his brand new N64 with Mario 64, coming home and pleading my parents for one. My parents - who showed zero interest in gaming however - had read about this system that was apparently the future in the newspaper and decided I was having that for Christmas instead.
Off I went to Electronics Boutique (at the time - Now GAME) and picked up a PS1 with gran turismo, tomb raider 2, fifa 99, and wipeout 2097 (and my older brother got resident evil 2). My mind was absolutely blown and I've loved Playstation ever since.
Absolutely terrifying that it's been 30 years since it launched in Japan but a sign of how significant and influential Sony's initial foray into gaming was. What a console that little grey box turned out to be.
Made me weirdly emotional watching that, shocking how fast time flys by. Got my PlayStation for my 12th birthday in 1996 and nothing has quite felt like a gaming home since.
Guess we'll see what the 3rd has in store tomorrow, if anything.
To think this all down to Nintendo really.
I remember Christmas Day 1996 opening my PS1 with Crash Bandicoot. I think the only Christmas I have been more excited for is when I got my PS2 four years later. While it’s cool being an adult and being able to buy these things yourself there is something magical about the build up to Christmas Day as a kid when you know you are going to get a new console. Certainly more magical than hammering refresh on an Amazon order screen to try and secure a PS5 day one.
Geez, that hit me in the feels.
Meh. It was nice seeing some of the cool stuff they used to make. I sure do miss the older days of playstation. Live long and prosper Asobi
@Pepsiman_100 But a large chunk of the trailer is the new games.
This was emotional and through most of it I was like aww but I just lost it when it said Connections and the Kingdom Hearts characters appeared that really hit me in the feels 😅😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
I know, I know, eat the rich, down with corpos, Etc Etc...
but cheese and rice are there a lot of entitled gamers out there? Can't we like the thing for the thing it is? Why is there always one guy begging for money and free games, another one port begging, people crying for a showcase, and 3 people with nostalgia glasses so thick they can't see anything but the past?
Thanks for the memories PlayStation!
Been here since the start. 💖
I didn't realize that I'm about 6 months older then the Playstation brand. Crazy.
Nice to see Nate, Sackboy and Wipeout shown - never to return again? Far more iconic than the recent meh titles.
I can’t think of a better way to show your thanks to legions of diehard fans who’ve supported you consistently over the last 30 years than by limiting the only half-decent looking PS5 Pro to 12K units and unnecessarily removing awesome themes for no real reason after only 1 month.
@get2sammyb sorry I'm not sure what you mean.
Around 14 in my bedroom in mid 90s playing those now PlayStation 1 classics like RidgeRacer, TR, RE123, GranTurismo, CrashBandicoot, MGS and Silent Hill listening to Oasis along with an N64 a little later. Those will be my fav gaming nostalgia memories forever and it's crazy to think all those games I just mentioned are still going strong in some way to this very day. This trailer hit me hard ngl, especially the end bit when it mentions the word you🥹
Lovely video. Having been there since the start (maybe a year late, since I was Saturn all the way... and still am) it's a quality bite of nostalgia.
Funny how it ended with Bloodborne, Game Awards announcement inbound?
@danzoEX Resistance in there too just before Bloodborne
Yo this trailer was beautiful... Thank you PlayStation for my childhood years and even now
And they end it with Bloodborne, come on Push Square, write a couple of "articles" about how they are cooking something.... sigh
@BeerMonster Nobody forced you to spend that money…
Amazing video!!! Loved it! The old intro too, so happy today! I'm with Playstation since the One!
That is the best marketing I've seen from Sony since they destroyed XB1 with the 15 second 'How to share games' commercial. Also, I got teared up a little. That was some high polish. The ico->Shadow of the Colossus->Guardian transition was epic.
@Shepherd_Tallon God damn, gaming nostalgia hits so hard.
@Frmknst You were happy once. It must have been awful for you.
Okay now who's cutting onions? Seriously though the nostalgia was strong with this one and that was a good video.
@BeerMonster Got nothing for that money no? Thanks for donating. I've spent a decent amount of it too but got games and consoles in return.
Thank you PlayStation.i been with you since day 1 here in queens new york in September 9.1995.from a fan of sega genesis to PlayStation.i never look back.im still with the PlayStation.thats legendary g.o.a.t. 🐐 👑 status.word up son
@Pepsiman_100
You must be very young
I can't believe they put Horizon infrot of God of war 🙄🤯🤯🤯🤯
Right in the feels... I'm getting old, started gaming on a C64, then DOS, consoles. I owned a lot of them but the first playstation was magical. But the playstation 2 is the console I love dearly. The library on that console is insane, truly insane. If I had to make a choice which gaming system I had access to for the rest of my life and missing the others I wouldn't blink an eye. On to the next 30 years!
Best Playstation story I have is how I acquired a PS1. My sister had a very spoiled friend growing up. One day my mom and I go to drop her off at said friends house. When we go inside my mind was blown when I saw a PS1 in the living room. Now I was giddy being a gamer and being pretty poor growing up. I told her I couldn't believe she had one. She says I don't really even like it. Me being a kid I immediately followed her up with "Well can I have it then??" She said "sure" and her mother with some hesitation let me have it. One of the best memories I have from my childhood.
Bloodborne is the last game featured. Hmm....
@BeerMonster you bought the consoles, they made the games and the platform to play other 3rd party games.
They owe you nothing, but also you owe them nothing.
For those mid 30s-40+ in age, spending your early gaming years in the Nintendo vs Sega era. Playstation coming onto the scene was such a big thing and look at where we are now. What a wild ride.
I always have had a Playstation (primary) and Nintendo console since I was a kid. Every gen, all the great games that have come out. The great IPs that have come and gone. I feel like Playstation has continued to mature and grow over the years to cater to a gamer at any age. Yes, Nintendo still has the nostalgia factor, and still makes great games, but the target audience is always and has been kids first.
Can't wait to see what the next 30 bring for Sony.
Amazing Video and pure nostalgia trip which gave me goosebumps. Been with them since day one as a kid playing the Army Men games and Crash Bandicoot all the way to PS5 and never regretted a single purchase (console wise).
Hopefully here's to another 30 years 🍻
@Rob_230 I always found it interesting the gamer split from the PSX and the N64. While the N64 had those handful of games that people still talk about to this day, the depth of the PSX catalog is absolutely insane. The kids with a PSX were definitely cooler 😎
I'm from the C64 era, got my PS1 as a present to myself for qualifying and never looked back. Whingers gonna whinge, but I know how much joy I've had for 30 years and the video brought that right back.
Thanks everyone who has put heart and soul into these amazing little boxes and here's to 30 years more 🎉
How cheeky of Sony to show a Bloodborne clip as the final one. But it does make sense for why they used "persistance" for it. Bloodborne is a 9 year old game that to this day people are still talking about it like it was a true cult classic and are still begging for a remaster, unlike other early PS4 exclusives like The Order 1886 which are largely forgotten even by Sony and when people are talking about it, it's only to reafirm the issue that unfortunately there are some gamers out there that still prefer style over real substance (or in simpler terms, graphics over gameplay).
Thanks for the video Sony. It would have been nice seeing Spyro (Reignited Trilogy) in here as well, I almost expected it for a few seconds since we got Crash (N. Sane Trilogy). Say what you want about Crash and Spyro nowadays but those two's initial strong connection with PlayStation cannot be denied.
Moving on, I liked seeing Sly in there, even if it was for just one second. Its better then nothing.
I think only people 40+ appreciate ps1 to ps5. So, had to of started with c64, NES, Megadrive...maybe late 30's...starting with Playstation is cool too... but seeing PS1 from Megadrive...was something else. Playstation brand was such a force...that console start up says it all...
I was lucky to own both the N64 and PSone back in the day. Even though I loved the N64 I played more on the PSone. Final Fantasy VII and FFVIII, Alundra, Metal Gear, Tomb Raider, Tekken, Mega Man X4, Klonoa, Resident Evil 2, so many amazing games and great memories. To this day the PSone is still my favourite console with the SNES on a second place. Nothing can beat that library of games.
That's not OG Bloodborne. That's a remaster.
As much as Sony has annoyed me recently, I think we all have countless great memories because of Playstation.
Maybe you shouldn't remind gamers of how decent PlayStation used to be and how ***** it is now
@themightyant Thanks for the mix / cover link 🤝
Makes me wish I didn’t miss out on the first 10 years of it as a diehard Nintendo fanboy.
It should not be for a limited time only.
I've been an owner of almost every PS console minus the PS3 and Vita. This made me emotional, it really has so many memories from my childhood.
@BeerMonster They gave you something already - the games you were clearly happy to spend money on.
My favorite moments, are from the PS1-PS2 era.
So far, even though we have gotten some good games, this has overall, been the worst PS (same with Xbox) generation.
That old-school PS magic, has mostly been missing.
I hope things will get better, in the second half of this gen.
So I watched this in the morning (here in Aussie Land) but didn't provide a comment. I think the video is ok in itself; however... I actually don't understand it from two perspectives. Firstly... why does it mostly focus on games out in the last 10 years (or even more recent) - when it's a 30 year celebration. The second thing that confuses me is the message... what is the "thank you" for... for us playing their games? Or is it (and I suspect this is the message they want to give) meant be understood as us saying thank you to Sony? The text doesn't make sense... but because it's meant to emote something, it seems reasonable. Like saying puppy dogs are fun... eat a healthy diet... be nice to people.
If it's Sony thanking us... wouldn't we as players be the key? Where is a single real world person saying thankyou to PlayStation in this video? But if it's Sony thanking themselves... isn't that just a little creepy? I mean... weirdly, and awkwardly, non-self-aware?
And yes - it's just a typical modern PR campaign that is meant to sell the idea of great games and give us the feels because... because.... because of 'swelling of uplifting and mildly nostalgic musically backed Hallmark statements' tells us to. The reason I'm not so keen is that this is largely by paying lip-service to it's legacy of games (a lot of which Sony has abandoned despite being fan-favourites). Instead what it's really trying to do is remind us they've made a lot of games for PS4/PS5... except they haven't... Sony keep sleep-walking... surrounded by people patting themselves on the back for "winning the war"... as they walk off the cliff.
Just me being confused on a Tuesday... oh.. that's right... Happy Birthday PlayStation, and you're welcome
Beautiful emotional video 🥹
What a legacy! Proud to be playing on PlayStation for so many years.
@BeerMonster to be fair if you have spent that much on PS you probably have whatever they would theoretically give away. It’s just a celebration. I wouldn’t take it too seriously.
On another note, I liked the video, great reminder of a lot of good games I played over the years. I remember being blown away by the scale of Shadow of the Colossus when it launched. Being so invested in The Last of Us in 2013 I played for ten house straight on a weekend. Driving myself crazy trying to beat Bloodbourne. Shoot I remember the playing FFVII for the first time and thinking graphics had peaked and would never surpass the pre rendered backgrounds. Playing Death Stranding late at night while my wife was asleep helped me through the loss of my son. Helldivers II got an old group of friends back together and even got my brother to hop online consistently to game.
Sony is a heartless corporation of course, they all are, but PS has been at least a small part of my life since elementary school and I have had a great time on all their systems.
@IamJT you understand where they existed, many of the old games were there to show that those old games were being remade/updated (which is why they followed a lot of the games with modern versions). Except the really popular games they gave up on, and yet are appparently celebrating?
Does anyone actually think this ad was made by anyone that was a gamer? Or was informed by anyone outside of corporate comms? Or the contracted PR firm to sell.... feels. Because that's what we get for a 30th anniversary?
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare 🤷♂️ an ad is an ad. This is an ad. I enjoyed it because it reminds me of many great moments I had on PS. I know a lot of people have been upset with Sony lately but gaming is a hobby to me and I don’t care to be upset over a hobby. There has been no shortage of games I have enjoyed over the past four years and I doubt that will change. Just got the plat for Killer Frequency today and while it had faults, I really appreciated what the game tried to do. Have about ten games lined up to play. If anything the “first party drought” has really helped me tackle my backlog and try new things!
Also, a lot of games popular with “hardcore” PS fans were not big sellers. Sad they don’t get sequels/new entries but it makes sense.
"dear users...thank you for your loyalty despite..." PSN outages, personal data leaks, crappy PS+ games line up, subscription price increases, consoles overheating due to faulty design, internal studio closures, digital games delistings, hardly-any-launch-titles-for-PS5,...the list goes on But yeah, still much better than the M$ offer...
@IamJT don't get me wrong - I'm not saying there aren't good games... I've personally decided now is the time to work on my back-log too. I think gamers (in general) are eating well. I just think it's a little tone-deaf for Sony to put out a 30th anniversary ad, when they hardly mention their great legacy, but try to pretend their first party output is amazing.
I think more of us should do what you're doing. But I think we should also question... WTF sort of ad was that, and what was it selling?.... but that's just me.
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare "Firstly... why does it mostly focus on games out in the last 10 years (or even more recent) - when it's a 30 year celebration"
Go watch the video again. They showed:
They pretty much showed PS1-5 games. Of course they can't show every single PS games or the video would last for hours.
I know it's the cranberries, but Faye Wong in chungking express anyone? ❤️
@tameshiyaku either that or Meisa Kuroki in One Missed Call 3
@PuppetMaster and how much time did they spend on those - compared to their modern games. Let's be honest. This is not a legacy ad.
Do you want us to time how much time was spent on games in the last 10 years - vs games in the previous 20? It's fine... it's an ad to sell PlayStation. It's not a celebration of their history. If it were - it would have focused on all the fan engagment... the people waiting in lines for games/consoles... the E3 experiences... the videos of kids opening Christmas presents...Us. Not some corpo swill alongside a not-GotG soundtrack.
People keep wanting that PlayStation is still the same company they grew up with. As someone that grew up with the PS1, this ad just shows me how little they care about that heritage... over selling Kratos, Nathan, Aloy, GT7, Jin, Spiderman, Joel/Ellie... Sackboy... modern Ratchet... over all the things you said.
People need to stop projecting onto corporate crap... like it means something. What does all the text mean to you? How does this relate to thanks - for who - for what? We actually need to expect better... instead we're being conditioned to accepting mid. And that's the state of gaming today... aim for the most bland, non-offensive.... non-inspirational thing you can make.
Edit: And so here's the rough tally (games : seconds) - noting that there were 2 (1 second flashes) I couldn't place. And some I've had to guess between PS4/5 versions; and a couple of others I struggled to pick PS1/2 or PS2/3
PS1 - 2 games : 2 seconds
PS2 - 9 games : 11 seconds
PS3 - 12 games : 16 seconds
PS4 - 14 games : 40 seconds
PS5 - 11 games : 35 seconds.
Where everything other than the PS4/5 games got 1 second per game. Congratulations on 30 years!
@tofuman86 ... or lupin the 3rd 😊 though with Chungking I was mainly referring to the music
@Oz_Who_Dat_Dare So you want them to spend how long for each legacy game, 1 minute for a 2 minute video? You're not making any fking sense here.
And you really missing the point of the video. But hey, you do you i guess.
@PuppetMaster And what was the point of the video? Compressing 20 years of their history down to 30 seconds, and the last 10 years to 75. I think actually think you missed the point... but hey... happy anniversary. This is the epitomy of shallow marketing. It's literally an ad...
@get2sammyb I just cried my ***** eyes out and I'm 42. All the memories and emotions this video elicits... Plus mixed with my hopes for the future of myself and my family... It was too much. God damn!
What an incredible video. Brought back so many memories of me growing up, playing across all the generations of Playstation.
@PuppetMaster Yep, Dreams was getting some heavy radio play during 1994, the year the PS1 launched, so a pretty perfect accompanying song.
