In celebration of PlayStation's 30th Anniversary, a new PS5 update lets you customise your console's home menu with themes that are based on past PlayStation consoles. Very cool.
But you know what's even cooler? Once you've grabbed this update, you'll be met with the iconic PS1 startup screen, complete with that deeply nostalgic audio. A genuine work of art (especially if you're aged 30 and over!).
The only difference is that we get a '30th Anniversary' logo instead of the PlayStation logo. But again, the audio stays the same as it was all those years ago.
There is a catch, however, in that this startup screen — and the aforementioned themes — will only be available for a limited time. You'd better get your fill of all this nostalgia while you still can!
On that note, we can totally see PlayStation fans campaigning to keep these options. We wouldn't be surprised if there's a bit of a backlash once the anniversary celebrations are over.
How do you feel about seeing this iconic PS1 startup screen again? Would you keep it, given the choice? Let Sony know in the comments section below.
Would you keep the PS1 startup screen on PS5, if possible? (3,111 votes)
- Yes, I'd love to keep it
- No, I prefer the normal PS5 startup

Man i really hope this is the start of more in depth customization options for the home menus
It's joy distilled into audio form and gives me goosebumps every time.
This looks great but it's also really stupid that they're going to remove them.
That said, seeing and hearing the familiar PS1 startup has been a joy and I've settled on the PS2 for the menu. Now Sony just do the right thing and leave them in for people to use
Yeah, I’d keep this given the option!
Maybe I'm biased because I'm a 90's kid who grew up with PS1 but YES!!! They should keep this permanently
Pretty neat!
A shame Sony is making it temporary.
That being said, I do still prefer the regular boot up.
That PS1 startup sound and logo made me giggle like a little kid 😄 How wonderful. I still remember getting my PS1 back in the day... gosh I'm getting all choked up now 🥹
Can we also get custom music with themes as well?
Are we looking at an updated company slogan as well?
PlayStation
For the players (for a limited time)
Did the update but haven't turned it back on yet. No reason to let us only use this temporarily but I could see if it's only available to get temporarily b/c unfortunately that's how the world works, on Fomo.
PS1 was my first "modern" console, I had an Atari 7800 before that, and Pong before that, and a cassette based home computer that I played a lot of games on, but I still think of PS as my first console, so it's nice. GameCube, Dreamcast and all the rest after that. Though only 1 Xboxen rental for 6 months, think it was One.
What's the logic behind making it temporary, I wonder? Engaging FOMO to get people on their platform and buying things now? Plans to sell the themes later? I don't know, it just seems odd.
As someone who grew up on the PS1 and Mega Drive, then exclusively PS2 and PSP, this is cool.
But also just a further affirmation that Sony is dead set on shedding what made many people like the brand in the first place.
Sounds like Sony have gone all Nintendo with this one
They could just remove the 30th anniversary moniker and make it an option in the menu. I really don't understand what it costs them to keep it. I can understand the mentality of trying to make the event special by making it time limited but you can also do that by making these permanent as a celebration gift to the community
@Azex Yeah, depends how you look at it. This is basically a birthday for PlayStation. Are these themes the equivalent to the present, which you keep after the event, or equivalent to the party, which only lasts a short time? Seems like they looking at it as the party and we're looking at it as the present.
I love the original PS splash but I love the Dreamcast one even more. What’s everyone else’s favourite?
That original isn't that pleasant on my 75" HDR TV to be honest. The older I get the more I like darker themes
So am i to understand that even after installing the update it will no longer work after a certain date? If so that's a real bummer. I'd keep it.
@vyseofhr Dreamcast is a great start up but PS1 gets my top fav for that mid 90s nostalgia. Gamecube start up ain't bad. PS3 start up sound was pretty good even if a little on the simple side
I can already picture people downloading the update and keeping the ps5 offline forever and resell the same on ebay lol
That original PS1 boot sound is basically the soundtrack to my childhood, something I'm sure a lot of people can relate to. As much as I love it though, in terms of UI sounds I actually prefer the PS2.
So glad I didn't read about it before it happened. That was a pure 100% grade shot of nostalgia right there.
Aged 30 and over? If your 30ish now the ps1 era ended before you even started school (england) lol. More like 35+
As a child of the 80s and 90s, I want this on all present and future Sony hardware going forward. I. Love. This.
I have that startup sound as my phones notification sound!
Turning on my PS5

Removed - off-topic
What is the point in making it limited though? For god sake, just let players enjoy it without time gating it xD
Remember, riot in advance and riot afterwards once taken away. That's the only way we may have a chance to keep this lol. This PlayStation is sadly a no fun zone and you have to practically use bully tactics on them😂😞.
My first PlayStation was the PS3, which I bought originally for Blu-Ray movies and didn't expect to get hooked on the gaming. Since then I've had a PS4, PS4 Pro, and launch-day PS5. My only exposure to the PS1 or PS2 is through remastered games (though I do love Sly Cooper). This may be only the second or third time I've seen the PS1 startup and heard that sound.
So this carries no nostalgia for me at all. Cool, once, but I'm one of the 2% who will be happy to go back to the "normal" PS5 startup.
Who makes these decisions? What does the standard PS5 startup do for Sony in the privacy of our homes exactly? Nostalgia is a powerful thing and I'd be grateful to keep the PS1 jingle.
@vyseofhr good shout. I liked the og 2001 Xbox too.
@vyseofhr the original Xbox360 (2005-2009) start-up before the watered down kinect update one is my favorite.
legendary start up for a legendary console
oh, and PS2 is cool too, but i prefer it to display the consoles name instead of “sony computer entertainment” or whatever .
@RobN the ps5 has a start up?
The PS1 boot sound is a timeless classic, it shouldn't be a limited time for the PS5 imo.
Now that is a conclusive poll!
I would love it to have the option of setting the start-up animation to any of the previous gens. I would 100% set it to the PS3 orchestral tune-up.
I understand it wouldnt be special if they had that stuff baked in from the start....I'd still like to keep the options -.-'
Why removed it and not make it permanent 😒
Good grief. Digital content, free or paid, should not be limited. This is not a licensing deal Sony has to negotiate with a third party. Let us keep it.
Gah! I'm torn between PS1 and PS2! Maybe if Sony gave me more back compat games! That might influence me.
That noise nearly gave me whiplash!
@Xbox_Dashboard Username does not check out lol
@MrPeanutbutterz I can dream! More back compat is always better.
Who doesn't want the choice of having the PS1 start up sound it takes you back to the 90s
Literally the one thing we've been asking for Sony to bring back which were themes and it's a ***** limited time event?? You suck Sony.
@Xbox_Dashboard I'd say the original Xbox 360 "blades" theme is the GoAT. Microsoft did everyone very dirty getting rid of it.
@MrPeanutbutterz
It was it made the system faster they should have put it back when they killed off the system to Xbox live. They made such a mess of it they just started to copy Nintendo with Avatars/Miis then it sort of copied the PS3s XMB it was rubbish blade was perfect don't know why they didn't allow us to change it on the fly
Please keep it
Couldn't care tbh. Id rather have more games to play than customizing a home screen while waiting for more games to play
@devildragon2k23 hey , we gotta do something in this sony exclusives drought
i wish we could have it forever.
Pretty sure a big part of that PS1 startup sound was made on a Roland D-50 synthesizer.
I think they should have included this atleast with the limited edition Playstation 30th Anniversary Editions permanently.
Certainly some nostalgia with myself and PS1.
Was my first ever self-purchased console.
While will also always remember needing to connect the included tri-color audio / video cables to my VCR and use that as passthrough for my TV (which only had a coax input).
Is this for all PS5's or just the 30th anniversary console?
Like people have already said. We need to bombard Sony to reverse the decision allowing us to keep it.
@Matroska very underrated comment mate. I agree. Different expectations always lead to disappointment and misunderstandings.
Oooh the startup, I love it!!
I've got a lamp which makes the sound when you turn it on. I'll try to remember to turn on all my PlayStation lights later today.
As others have said, give us the option to keep it.
This needs to stay for!
Why limited tho
Enjoy it while it lasts - probably stick them behind a PS+ Premium paywall as their next move.
After these go, guess I'll have to keep booting up my PS4 Pro with its Anniversary (PS1 startup) and Legacy theme (PS2 startup and visuals).
Hoping they keep all the 30th anniversary features makes the PS5 feel better than just the boring start screen and plain background theme.
Hope they bring back the dynamic themes
As much as I want it to stay, I also know there might be a cost involved in it.
In this case, I will guess it will add on QA cost since now every firmware/OS update you'll have to QA this part too to see if it isn't broken.
I don't understand why. They already did the welcome hub what more would they alter the UI with anyway.
They did themes right on PS4 to adapt so why not here?
QA/engineers can work around it it can't be that hard.
What a lot of effort for such time, kind of sad.
What more features would they even add that require that much altering around it?
I know PS3/4 did. Change a bit but not by much really.
Use of them should lead to statistics and other factors, why do they do this it's so stupid. What do they gain from look it's had its birthday now move on. It just sounds strange to me.
If Nintendo did the same with a anniversary and went look themes people would go yay then go why because people see appeal in themes.
To customise it themselves, to offer more colour choices, to like a skin do a lot of things.
It's like when Xbox had customisation for the OS then took it away for more ads and now I never want to look at the OS and never look down just disk/above apps and that's it. Runs bad too. On default..... Sigh......
I don't understand what this accomplishes by removing them.
You can still get the 20th share factory theme, you don't download these PS5 ones do you?
So it's not attached to the account like the Vita/PS4/others are right when being limited?
Never actually experienced them before that's why also. Not that I care but in this case I found it strange.
I dont want them to remove it
I associate that start up with Tekken and Ridge Racer - was the only 2 games I had for a good while!
But what a 2 games.
I'm not so fussed about the themes (choose the PS3 one in the end since the header is transparent and the footer black), but that boot up screen and audio is definitely a keeper. I've been PlayStationing since the PS1 days so the nostalgia from the audio is very real.
It was certainly a treat when my PS5 Pro restarted after the update. I didn’t know it was coming, and suddenly I was transported to the mid-90s for a brief moment.
gonna rest one my old ps1s on top of the ps5 for the full effect
I already like PS5 startup sound so I'm good.
@vyseofhr I liked the Sega Saturn's start up 👍. But the original Playstation one when I booted my PS5 to play Tower of Aghasba today brings back some good memories.
This
Misses a choice.great to have this month. Nice to have it again on the ps6 in five years for a month.
Things should be kept special.
Sony taking it away is the reason ill hack my ps5 one day so i can keep it forever lol
