We liked Zenless Zone Zero a lot when it launched in July, and we’ve stuck with it in the five or so months since. But HoYoverse said it was committed to fan feedback, and it wasn’t kidding – it’s effectively transformed the game in the five or so months since.

One crucial alteration, which will be completed with the introduction of v1.4 on 18th December, will see the flow of the story transformed, as the tile-based TV mode gameplay – used to navigate between combat stages – will be replaced with puzzle platforming style interludes.

If you already play the game, then you’ll know what a remarkable change this is; if you don’t, then just imagine a key component of the gameplay being completely revamped for existing story chapters and all future ones. Speaking of which, the new update will continue the main plot with Chapter 5 and a bunch of Agent Stories.

HoYoverse is treating this version of the game as a kind of soft relaunch, and so its most anticipated character Hoshimi Miyabi will be available right throughout the update as part of a promoted banner. She’ll be flanked by fellow S-Rank Harumasa, who’ll be given away for free to all players who reach Inter-Knot Level 8.

Beyond the new agents, story, and structural changes, the dev is also making some remarkable alterations to gameplay systems. Characters will no longer share the Ultimate meter, allowing each team member to have a greater impact on combat. Other quality of life enhancements will make building your squad swifter and smoother.

And perhaps most importantly of all, PS5 Pro support is being added, boasting enhanced performance, visual fidelity, and ray tracing support. The results are impressive, as illustrated in the screenshots within, but if you’d like to learn more about the feature then you can read our interview through here.
