Extremely OK Games, the studio behind indie hit Celeste, has announced the cancellation of its next game, Earthblade. Initially revealed way back in April 2021, the project will now never see the light of day due to internal disagreements over the IP rights for Celeste. While an agreement was reached, the fracture was enough to cause Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry to consider whether finishing the project "was the right path forward". They decided last month it was not.
In a blog post on the developer's website, the situation was explained: "Earlier this year, a fracture began forming in the team. Specifically, this was between us (Noel & I) and Pedro, a founding member of EXOK, longtime friend & collaborator, and art director of Earthblade and pixel/ui artist on Celeste and TowerFall. The conflict centered around a disagreement about the IP rights of Celeste, which we won't be detailing publicly - this was obviously a very difficult and heartbreaking process."
It's then stated that while the project "had a lot going for it", the team wasn't far enough along in development as it should be, considering the amount of time that has passed. "Noel and I also began to reflect on how the game has felt for us to work on day-to-day, and realized that it has been a struggle for a long time," said Thorson. "Sure, working on one project for so long is bound to become a slog, but this feels like a deeper problem." Due to the expectations placed on the developer's shoulders as a result of Celeste, the project became "exhausting" to work on.
As for what's next from Extremely Ok Games, the team is focusing on smaller-scale projects, currently "prototyping again and exploring at our own pace, and trying to rediscover game development in a manner closer to how we approached it at Celeste's or TowerFall's inception". Earthblade had me excited and I'm sorry to hear of this behind-the-scenes strife. Whatever they come up with next, I know it will be quality. Until then, Celeste and the phenomenal Celeste 64 (yes, look it up) will continue to provide me endless entertainment.
This statement just sounds like they are too lazy to work hard on a game and they used this as an excuse. Games are work and they don't sound like they wanted to actually work.
This is a shame. I really like Celeste, and TowerFall Ascension is one of my all-time favorites. I hope they rebound with something killer again soon.
@Lavishturtle Yeah, because I’m sure Celeste and Towerfall took no work at all. Great games that just magically appeared.
@Lavishturtle That makes no sense lol
@Lavishturtle Come on. It doesn't sound like they didn't want to work. It sounds like they had a disagreement over the IP rights and it was creating too much friction and affecting how the game was progressing. They didn't want to put out a bad game and they didn't want to continue working in a negative environment. I don't know why you would assume they're lazy, there's nothing to suggest that at all and their previous efforts prove that's not the case.
All of these cancelations are becoming annoying. I was really excited for this one. Then again, it seems like the joy in creating a piece of art was not in it, at least later on in development. That could ultimately lead to a disappointing project at the end of the day. And again, we don’t necessarily know the disagreements internally, but I’m sure this wasn’t an easy decision on both sides of the party.
Wouldn't this whole dispute essentially make any development environment exhausting and hostile until it gets resolved?
I don't see how dropping one project in favor of something else is going to magically make the problem disappear.
Sounds to me like this whole studio is going to go up in flames in the near future.
@GamingFan4Lyf Multiple people, among them is Pedro, have left the studio in the last few weeks. Sounds like the dispute couldn't be resolved.
And yes, the studio is practically done for.
as a big fan of celeste, this is sad news. this statement doesn't make sense, though:
"Due to the expectations placed on the developer's shoulders as a result of Celeste, the project became "exhausting" to work on."
you cannot run away from the success of celeste. no matter what you work on next, there will be high expectations. so to use that as a scape goat and then say that they will be working on smaller-scale projects does not solve the "celeste problem" going forward, be it 5 years from now or 15 years from now when their next game releases, under a new studio name or not. but hey, they are allowed to keep the real reason private, of course.
money. greed. ego. strike again.
@GamingFan4Lyf yup. sounds about right.
This is very alarming honestly. I never got into Celeste, but the reasoning here is really eerie. My interpretation, correct or not, is that leadership felt they had IP rights and the rest of the team didn’t agree. The fact they all left sounds like they weren’t allowed to utilize the work they poured into Celeste at all, which if true is really really disgusting. While I’m sure privacy is vital here, the optics are really ugly. I can’t imagine they didn’t have some kind of agreement/contract in place here. I’d be interested in hearing the rest of the developers side of the story.
@Lavishturtle To you, someone who has no knowledge what so ever on the topic, yeah maybe.
From a gamers perspective that is a shame I was really excited for this one.
But from a human one it sounds like a really stressful situation, which is unlikely a good environment to make great games.
I’m disappointed to hear that. I absolutely loved Celeste. I’m hoping we don’t have to wait another 5+ years for whatever comes next.
@Coffeeglitch What makes the situation more complex is that Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry created the original Celeste (these days called Celeste Classic) on PICO-8. That game was remade/rebooted into the Celeste with the help of other people like Pedro Medeiros, Amora Bettany, Lena Raine etc.
I have no idea how IP ownership works in terms of law, but Maddy and Noel created the IP, there's no question about it.
Anyway, we don't know what the issue was, so making baseless assumptions about the situation isn't helping anyone.
Noooooo! My wife and I had been playing Towerfall again this past week, so I’ve definitely been hoping for an update on this one and thinking about it. This isn’t the update I wanted, but it is what it is, I suppose. I thought this one was going to release this year too…
Dang, this is disappointing — big big fan of Celeste, and the trailer looked luscious.
Dont work as friend setup a contract with all the details to prefent this.
@KoopaTheGamer ahhh I see! This definitely makes sense, and complicates the IP if it wasn’t sufficiently different from the original version. Very messy but very sad situation. Clearly all parties involved are extremely talented so it’s just a really distressing situation. Thank you for the history lesson, I wasn’t privy to that.
What a shame, I love Celeste and was looking forward to this game.
Celeste is one of the most overrated games I’ve ever played. Extra credit for the “depth.”
