According to a new interview with Japanese publication 4Gamer (as covered in English by Siliconera), publisher Koei Tecmo and developer Omega Force were working on a different Dynasty Warriors title prior to the newly released Dynasty Warriors: Origins.
However, the project — which probably would have become Dynasty Warriors 10 — was cancelled, and some parts of it, like the world map, were then repurposed for Origins.
Producer Tomohiko Sho suggests that the team wanted a fresh start — a "back to basics" approach after 2018's deeply disappointing Dynasty Warriors 9. And that's really what Origins is — something of a reboot for the franchise to springboard from.
Apparently, this early form of Dynasty Warriors 10 was set to carry on from the gameplay of Dynasty Warriors 7 — and by extension, Dynasty Warriors 8 — which makes it sound like the developer didn't want to build upon the divisive open world structure of Dynasty Warriors 9.
For what it's worth, we're glad that Koei Tecmo and Omega Force changed course. We reckon Dynasty Warriors: Origins is one of the most exciting and well-crafted Dynasty Warriors titles yet, and we can totally see how the series could evolve, using Origins as a foundation.
Origins is also the highest-rated entry in series history, and that surely has to count for something!

Absolutely the right move.
After spending a significant amount of time with this game, I can confidently say it’s one of the best Dynasty Warriors experiences I’ve had (and I played all of them)
The combat feels buttery smooth, and seeing over 100,000 characters on screen without any frame drops is nothing short of impressive. The character interactions are engaging, the new overworld map movement is a welcome addition, and the RPG elements with skill points add a refreshing layer of depth.
While this isn’t a numbered entry, it’s a true single-player RPG, and Omega Force never marketed it as part of the main series.
Still, this game marks an incredible return for Dynasty Warriors. I really hope they use it as a blueprint for future numbered titles and the Empire series, because it’s absolutely phenomenal.
Shame they dropped the Jin Kingdom. Probably will be dlc or in the sequel again
I think Origins could be a great launch platform for new players looking to get into the franchise, and who knows, if the game does/sell well, this could be the "reboot" this franchise needed.
Its a shame its dropped so many of the things that make series what it is for a boring nameless character no one gives two sh*ts about. I can see this one growing stale pretty quickly.
Never played any of these games before. Would this be a good place to start then considering lol
Growing up these were some of my favorite games, however I only ever played them coop and am a bit disappointed that this is a single player experience.
Ive only played the demo, but strongly considering buying this game - I wouldnt have bought a DW10, so seems like a good move to me.
This is the 1st time in many years I can remember a DW game getting such mainstream attention!
@AndyKazama I assume they might be in the sequel, since they probably won't do DLC for this. If anything you'll see the officer of Jin in the sequel under Wei.
I feel like the sequel will be up too WuZhang Plains which would basically be the end of The Three Kingdoms(before Jin vs Shu and barely Wu).
I'm glad the game has turned out well and will be playing it this weekend. I'm more or so interested in the next Samurai Warriors game then DW10 to be honest.
Well... it's disappointing that they cancelled DW10, but if they were doing it open world again then it's for the best.
I want a DW10 in DW8 style, not DW9. With that said origins is not for me. It feels like a spin off.
I love everything about Origins except for the single character to play in the story. The main appeal of the series is leveling up dozens of characters with a unique playing style. I miss the days when each character had one weapon that was very unique. No two characters really played alike. I hate weapon switching and generic move sets shared by characters.
I’m hoping this comes to PS+ or Game Pass. I enjoy Musou games, but not enough to buy at full price, they get stale and monotonous really quickly.
