Like 40,000's God-Emperor of Mankind, fantasy's Elector-Count of Reikland, Karl Franz, gives with one hand and takes with the other. Following the success of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 and news that IP holder Games Workshop was looking for the next big hit, it seems an in-development RPG set in the grimdark fantasy version of the famous tabletop universe has been cancelled.
The news comes to us through a report from MP1st, with the outlet doing some resume-delving and turning up some tantalising details. In development at studio Thought Pennies, which suffered through multiple rounds of layoffs last year, resulting in the project's cancellation, it seems that the fantasy Warhammer RPG had its funding pulled, presumably by Games Workshop.
Never officially revealed, this "multiplatform, social roleplaying game" was being developed in Unreal Engine 5 and was described as a "co-op, PvE action RPG with a cast of unique characters and playstyles". It seems like the decision to cancel the project came as something of a surprise, as Thought Pennies CCO posted on LinkedIn that development was progressing well and that the team had received promising feedback despite funding being pulled.
Will Games Workshop be able to strike gold again with another Warhammer game? Do you find the prospect of fantasy Warhammer less appealing than its infintely more popular little brother, Warhammer 40,000? Let us know in the comments section below.

Let's be honest here..the warhammer games have been very hit and miss. When they are great they really are games to get lost in but when they are iffy then they really are quite mediocre at best. 40k darktide is brilliant fun and space marine 2 is very good despite being very short. I really enjoyed inquisitor until they released that shocking native ps5 upgrade for £25 and I honestly felt robbed. They have not even supported it in anyway and remains broken. Maybe a rpg in the style of dragons age would be good but I feel warhammer games are a bit of a gamble.
A normal warhammer crpg like rogue trader would be awesome
Just let owlcat do their thing, and let them make a great follow up to rogue trader.
@Northern_munkey I actually messaged them after they released the PS5 version about an Inquisitor upgrade and also if the DLC was cross buy. The person who replied said that the upgrade wasn't free and implied that it wasn't the developers decision. The way it was worded implied (to me) that the devs weren't thrilled with that decision.
But you're right - the quality of the license is all over the place. I love that the IP is thrown across a lot of genres and there's a healthy amount of games coming out every year that are all drastically different, but they really could exert a bit more quality control over the titles. Although I'd also argue against that, because I'd worry the creativity would be stifled
Always preferred the original fantasy RPG setting of Warhammer, probably because I played the paper & dice version for many years.
Apart from Vermintide (1 & 2) and Chaosbane (rough but quite playable), I can't think of any others apart from the Warhammer MMO on PC? Shame if this has bit the dust as the PS ecosystem could do with some decent fantasy RPGs with a solid back setting.
I get the impression that GW is starting to realise the extra value that being selective can add to the Warhammer IPs. From what I read and see online, recent releases have tended towards a higher quality than was the case, say, a decade ago. I think they're starting to realise that crappy games leveraging a particular setting may satisfy parts of their community who are already Warhammer fans, but that good games have a potentially wider reach and would actually grow the community by introducing new fans to the IP.
If i were to to take a shot in the dark and guess at the thinking here(Warning: Cynicism incoming): The huge success of Space Marine 2 probably made GW reevaluate the current projects in light of the IP now being potentially a lot more lucrative. They’ll likely be able to get better offers from bigger studios now, and therefore make a lot more licensing money than a game from “Thought Pennies”
I like OG Warhammer more than 40K, so this is sucky news since we rarely get anything related to that IP.
Warhammer Online is the last one I can think of, very short-lived but a great MMO. A lot of the ideas they had eventually made its way to WoW, FF14, and even more recently with Diablo4’s emergent quests.
They already had a warhammer rpg mmo. It was fun, the castle taking was fun.
