Helldivers 2 is a live service game designed to last for several years, but while the brunt of Swedish dev Arrowhead’s workforce focuses on new content for the co-op hit, creative director Johan Pilestedt is beginning to ponder what’s next.
“With 10 minutes to 2025: what are your expectations and desires for what the next Arrowhead game will be?” he quizzed on X (or Twitter), as spotted by VGC. “I am working on the high concept, but I would love to hear your speculation.”
Arrowhead has largely worked on co-op games, like Magicka and the first Helldivers, which was a modestly successful isometric shooter published for multiple PlayStation platforms.
Helldivers 2 has become a breakout hit for the Stockholm studio, however, securing the accolade of fastest-selling PS Studios title of all-time. Whatever the dev makes next will attract a lot of eyeballs.
It’s worth noting that while Sony is the publisher of Helldivers, it doesn’t actually own the developer. There has been some speculation over the years that it’s lining up an acquisition, but it seems Arrowhead is eager to retain its independence.
That means it’s free to sign with whichever publisher it prefers for its next project, although judging by what Pilestedt is saying here, it could be years before we actually see what it’s plotting. Helldivers 2 took almost a decade to make, and for the foreseeable future, we’d expect the brunt of Arrowhead’s efforts to be focused on supporting that.

More of the same I'd say. Also would like another Magicka game as that game was so funny when played co-op.
The fact that 2015 was a decade ago is actually disgusting
@DiggleDog very concerning tbh. 2015 feels like a year ago
A Warhammer 40k themed Helldivers style game. You play a member of a small Kill team that drops down to a planet in a drop pod.
@Oram77 maybe they have the money to buy Magicka from Paradox Entertainment.
@ChrisDeku Being a recent Warhammer 40k convert (thanks to Space Marine 2 and Darktide) I'm 100% behind this idea.
Helldivers 3 please 🔥
I'd love to see something completely different from Helldivers.
***** it. Give 'em Killzone. Who cares if it's a different style of Killzone game (should they ape the Helldivers co-op gameplay) or a different type of game than Arrowhead makes (if remains an FPS). Give them something with a little more meat and let them cook.
Arrowhead wasn't on my radar at all before, then I played Helldivers 2. I haven't been so invested with and "into" a game in a long, long time; 157 hours played so far (since late August) and I just went to keep going.
Anything that Arrowhead announces in the future will automatically be something I'll at least keep an eye on.
I would be stoked to see a Helldivers spinoff in a different genre, perhaps an XCOM-like game with a cool war strategy meta game.
@ShogunRok indeed. I love darktide and in some ways it feels a bit like helldivers 2 just without the massive bombs. A space marine themed helldivers would be top notch and I really like space marine 2 as well.
@MFTWrecks awesome idea! Bring back Killzone!!!
I hope he makes a football game
Whatever they do they need to move away from the engine they used for HD1 and 2 and something that is supported by it's creator. The engine they used for HD2 ended up been dropped by it's dev half way through HD2 production. It's very limited to what they can do with it and unfortunately when they have added things or fixed something its broken or broke something new, it still has issues from it's first patch last year that they've never fixed.
Helldivers 3, just not on whatever obsolete engine they're currently using.
@DiggleDog it’s depressing as hell
I’m not all into acquisitions but Arrowhead studios would have been a great fit for them.
I mean they would have made a really good Warhawk remake.. playing HellDivers 2 gave me some of that level of fun I had back then..
But obviously I would want them to be at liberty to create their own games.
I’d like them to stick to co-op, I’m not a fan of competitive games. Maybe try to push co-op into a new genre within the HD setting. Elsewhere it’s been reported that they prototyped a Star-Fox style dogfighting game, though that feels too niche these days.
I think they should fix Dolby Atmos audio. Game has been totally silent for a month now without a fix.
Before that the height channels had been broken for 3 months.
