We already knew that naval combat is going to be a big part of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, but this new gameplay trailer do a fantastic job of selling the Mad Dog's high seas shenanigans.
For those out of the loop, the latest Like a Dragon game stars an amnesiac Majima, who somehow ends up captaining a proper pirate ship, complete with crewmates, sails, and cannons.
This is where Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii swaggers into Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag territory, as you'll need to engage in full-on naval skirmishes with enemy vessels (which you can also board in person, if you prefer a more up-close-and-personal brawl).

The battles look absolutely mad, and you're free to fully customise your boat's looks and its weaponry. You'll also have to gather a capable crew, recruiting from over 100 side characters.
It's that typical Like a Dragon gameplay depth at work — it already looks like you could spend an ungodly number of hours levelling up your ship's many assets. Here's hoping that it isn't too much of a grind.

February is draining my credit card man!
Sega does what Ubisoftdont
This looks absolutely brilliant and bonkers, RGG are out here embarrassing much of the AAA industry (and a AAAA one 😉) with regular and great games and I cannot wait to play this
I love that you can have laser cannons on the ship, and it seems like there's some movement options to allow you to quickly turn your ship to help with positioning.
Ok, this looks awesome. I love pirate games like Black Flag, and I love Yakuza games. Some game developer somewhere has been reading my diary.
I am just hoping you don’t have to play the Like a Dragon games first to play this. I fully intend to play all the main Yakuza games, but I am only on Song of Life. I really want to play Pirate Yakuza in 2025, but if LAD and IW are required first, I am not gonna get there for a while.
Have mercy game developers! I have a job that requires a lot of hours and a family. I only have so much time to game! 😃
Excited for this but need to finish a few games first! About to wrap up Yakuza 5! What an epic game that is. Shinada is one of my new favorite characters in the series.
If I die before the delivery of my Deluxe Edition shows up please ensure my spouse buries it with me in an immortal embrace.
@Westernwolf4
I have not played the Yakuza/Like a Dragon games in any proper order and it has never detracted from my enjoyment of any of them. Do what you like and play in any order you wish, but I don't think playing out of order ruins anything.
I’ve never played a Yukuza game, or AC: Black Flag for that matter, but I am interested in this one. Will probably never actually play it unfortunately but it does look good.
I'm really looking forward to this but the only game I've beaten so far is YLAD and I'm 40 hours into Infinite Wealth. Still gotta hit Gaiden on ps plus, then this.
PS4 still living. 🧟
I said it before and I say it again, pirate game of the year.👑
@MikeOrator Thanks, this is good input! After playing 0-5, I agree that they can all be enjoyed as self-contained adventures so far. But there are references and characters shared between games, and I don’t want to miss too much of that.
I guess I am just hoping that you don’t miss too much without playing the Like a Dragon games (yet). Because frankly, I just want to be a pirate with one of my favorite Yakuza series characters and blow ships up!
So i took a nosey to see how long this was, expecting typical LaD/Yakuza fare of around 30hrs....turns out its barely 15 - I mean if that turns out to be true, then truly what a waste 🤨
Man if it was these gameplay mechanics without the cringe-worthy Asian campiness I'd be all in but I can't get behind that really low level humor. Just not my flavor.
Looks like fun for those that enjoy it though👍
It still surprises me that a Yakuza game is managing to be a better pirate game than Ubisoft with Skull and Bones. Lol
@ironcrow86 From what was stated by one of the devs of RGG Studios there was praise for Gaiden being shorter than the other games. That's pretty sad if that is the route they're taking though for future games.
@Nepp67
Hasbro's Battleship is a better pirate game than Skull and Bones...
@KundaliniRising333
What are you on about? Low-level humour? These games are PEAK campiness. Do you just prefer serious tones in all your games? Are you allergic to FUN? I'm just taking the p*ss, but campy humour is not a complaint I normally see about the Yakuza/Like Dragon games. Usually, the complaint is that we cannot make Kiryu and Majima kiss.
Laser cannons add to the realism of Majima’s pirate adventure. Back in the day, you couldn’t set sail to find any treasure without a few laser beams heading your direction. It’s kinda underutilized nowadays, but RGG knows what’s up and that’s lasers
@MikeOrator the funny thing is it’s like “normally” 97% just the side content that’s goofy not the main story. The main stories tend to be pretty damn serious IMO. Going from deadly serious to goofy as all can be substories to back to an intense story brawl is what makes Yakuza games so damn fun so I’m 100% with you my man
@MikeOrator I've previously commented on this, that as a huge Yakuza fan who loves the blend of earnest drama with mad humour, I feel RGG is purely trying to bank on the memeability and social media buzz by putting the camp front and center in pirate Yakuza. To the uninitiated it would appear Yakuza/LaD is just that, which is sad because personally I wouldn't have stuck with the series to this point if it were just a collection of Japanese campiness. Of course I'll play this game too, but I'm not nearly as excited as for any past entry or the upcoming project century.
@MikeOrator I get you are jest ing to some degree, but in all serious, you can see how some may not be into that campiness right. Doesn't mean I don't find things funny or even mind it in gamesm I just don't care for this level of cringe and cheese.
@KundaliniRising333 Oh hey it's you, we met on reddit over a year ago and you said I should join pushsquare. I finally did👋
@GirlVersusGame oh yes! Hello hello 👋
Naval battles weren't exactly my favorite part of the latest Ys, but it wasn't really a central part of the game. Hopefully, that's the same here.
"It's all cannon." I love these puns^^
I was hoping for some ridiculous ship Heat action where the ship does something it shouldn't physically be able to do.
Probably won't be that grindy because every game in the series has a setup to get cash/xp fast and the community will find it before long.
