Now that God of War’s Norse storyline has come to a close, the question on every fan’s mind is: which mythology will Kratos intermingle with next?
According to one report, the answer is Egyptian.
As spotted by Insider Gaming, DanielRPK has posted on his paywalled Patreon feed that God of War will pay a visit to the Egyptian pantheon in the series’ next title.
Apparently, Santa Monica Studio is currently casting for Middle Eastern actors to appear in a new game, which is “likely to be the next God of War that explores Egyptian mythology”.
It wouldn’t be much of a surprise to see the series go that route. An Egyptian excursion is teased in the Norse games, hinting at an area that could be explored in the future. As well as that, it's been brought up in interviews over the years as a possibility, and early concept art for God of War (2018) showed an Egyptian setting was absolutely on the cards.
This is just the word of one person, though, so as always, it's best not to bet the house on this. We can certainly see God of War taking Kratos to Egypt, but it may not even be Santa Monica Studio's next game; Cory Barlog and his team is busy beavering away at something new.
Potentially exciting things to come in the future, then. Would you like to see the Egyptian mythos explored in God of War? Tell us in the comments section below.

I feel like this was a given years ago? It's been awhile since I've played them, but weren't there hints about the egyptian gods, again I could be wrong.
Edit: Is this the game that Alanah Pearce claims to be a writer for?
Re-edit: Can we also get angry Kratos back...

"ANUBIS!!! YOU CONSPIRE AGAINST ME!?!?"
A+ sub header!
Otherwise sounds pretty good, look forward to seeing the reveal in 2033.
I would love to see the ancient Egyptian world and mythos be explored in the next God of War game, that sounds awesome!
If i remember correctly Santa Monica was working on 2 single player games right? I’m guessing this one and the sci fi game Cory Barlog is working on. When did this start development? You guys think a 2028 release could be possible? Assuming if they already started development of this game maybe a while ago, lets say after GoWR release in 2022? Or maybe shortly after in 2023
In terms of gameplay perspective i’d like to see some kind of mix of the old and new GoW games, maybe with multiple and more dynamic perspective, the over the shoulder perspective might become a bit stale
@ChrisDeku And the rest of the Super Best Friends to give us some mini-bosses to fight. Kratos vrs Joseph Smith, make it happen Santa Monica.
The sand physics will be amazing.hopefully we get a gow remake remaster this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary.
I love Egyptian mythology and am excited for this, but I was really hoping they'd consider Celtic folklore for the next world. I knew the chances were slim, though.
Either way, I hope they take their time to get it right. I'm fine with it being in the hands of a smaller team within Santa Monica for now and letting the main production focus be on new IP.
Part of what made 2018 so exciting was that it felt like a re-invention after a long pause. In reality it was only five years, but I think time moves quicker now we're in the twenties, so I'm happy to wait for PS6 for this (providing we get that rumoured 'new IP' in the interim).
I kind of feel like Ragnarok was losing steam with me by the end. I'm not sure I could play another god of war game in this style.
Gonna oomph Ra so hard. Great news. Playing the plus sandgame now and I think it's pretty meh.
Built from the ground up for this gen or next and take their time with it, absolutely in.
So he's not settled down then? Or maybe something happens that pulls him into the Egyptian mythology. Will be a day 1 purchase for me. Hope it's a big full game. Still hope they release the smaller game that follows Atreus after ragnarok as well.
@Oram77 Absolutely agree. There were plenty of hints in the last game that Egypt was next, including common Egyptian symbols like the Eye of Horus. But there were other symbols too, they could have gone any way and were likely leaving options open.
As much as I love God of War, this would feel like a predictable and uninspired move. It also feels like it wouldn't really make sense after Ragnarok's ending.
Kratos abandoning his (destroyed) homeland after the original trilogy and moving some place far away made sense, but I didn't really need this series turning into a journey across mythologies, almost like the latest Assassin's Creed games. They need a strong narrative hook for this to work.
I hope the trip to Egipt is a prequel to the Northern games, just like the scene from GoW 2018 suggested.
That part of Kratos journey, from Greece to the Nordic lands, is missing.
It would be great to bring his character arc to completion, to see the change from the ever angry warrior to a more "calm and reasonable person" starting to happen.... the reasons for choosing to go down that road, how he deals with the disaster he left behind in Greece, and what will ultimately bring him to the north.
Maybe even how he meets and gets to know Faye, as part of the final game (if it ends up being a new duo/trilogy) ? That part is largely unexplored in the 2 nordic games, there's a lot of potential there too.
Seems a logical step and Santa Monica’s prowess with graphics will surely look awesome in a desert setting
Assassin's God of Creed War
@Ainu20 Does feel like the Kratos is going on world tour.
Wouldn't be surprised if Arteus is the main character going forward. It won't be popular but it seemed like that was the way it was going.
Should be a pharoahl good time 😉
@Shinnok789 good idea. Definitely being a prequel would make much more sense
@AdamNovice I hope not. I don't dislike Atreus. But he's not a character I want to spend a full game with. I'd be more interested for a new story altogether if they decide to move on from Kratos.
Thats fine by me and more god of war is always welcome.word up son
Ragnarok released in 2022.
Its Jan 2025 - I really hope they're long past casting at this point 😅
@AhmadSumadi Agree, Atreus was annoying.
Is it worth giving ragnarock another go. I had 10hrs in before giving up. The pacing absolutely put me off it
My comment got deleted for saying he should fight jesus. Apparently it's OK to fight deities from any other religion, just not Christianity. Christianity exceptionalism I guess?
so they have no time for GOW remake? I don't mind the next chapter of GOW but I would love to see first two titles remake
Kratos going Egypt in search of Atreus .. something has happened to Atreus
@RagnarLothbrok absolutely. It gets much better
@Oram77 She probably was a writer on Cory's game, which supposedly it is not a GoW game.
I'm all for this, Egyptian mythology is really neat and has a lot of story potential
I’m pretty sure they have Corey’s team and the other team that works on god of war so it’s possible it’s already been started for a while
Can we drop the brat off at daycare and get a Kratos focused story? Okay we had a good time babysitting Arteus for two games but it's time to go back to the basics with GOW 1-3 rage filled Kratos!
Terrific if true, absolutely loved AC Origins and would be great to return to that time period with Kratos/Atreus whoever!
@Atreus97 There is a lot of pre-production before casting, so actually casting is a good sign.
@Oram77 I would second the motion for having angry Kratos back!
@Ainu20 In the dlc, the final boss boasts a few different weapon types that he introduces, and one would befit a Aztec/ Mayan theme, which could be cool... and would definitely bring more of an 'angry' Kratos vibe, I imagine.
Anubis ginning... classic. I hope it's not a trilogy...
I'd love to see a game as big as GOW delve into ancient sub-Saharan African history and lore. It's the most untapped (and some of the most interesting) resource out there. But I fear it would be met with pushback from all sides. Being called "woke" by one group while the other group is mad that a white guy directs the project. Ah, well...
Hopefully we will still play as Kratos and not Atreus.
Of all the filler in Ragnarok (there was alot) playing as Atreus was the worst. Personally I've never been a particularly fan of his character either.
Also hopefully it's more violent again more like GOW 3 and mabey Kratos being abit less chatty (also that in general)
None the less I'm looking forward to it
@LogicStrikesAgain I'd guess it would be sometime in the 2030s
I would have preferred it if they went a different route ,its all been done before , whats wrong with irish/celt mythology for example.
Anywhere but Ancient Egypt. The world still isn't ready for the non arab washed versions of the deities. Not worth the headache for the studio.
@AdamNovice "Wouldn't be surprised if Arteus is the main character going forward"
I know the Sony execs have been severely out of touch recently but even knowing that there's no way they greenlight an Arteus game which would almost certainly flop or break even best case scenario.
@Stickleman I think the only way kratos would go back to his insane ,head ripping, eye gouging old self , would be if they killed off atreus , id be up for that.
@Stickleman I didn't see it as filler at all. It was integral to the story and the evolution of gameplay. Atreus went from an annoying kid to a powerful warrior. And he can only grow as he becomes an adult.
Nothing beats Greek mythology. On a side note, I think the series has gotten boring since the original trilogy 😴
@Ilovecoffee Tell that to the millions of copies sold since the Original Trilogy ended
After Ragnarok, it just doesn't make sense to see Kratos going back to super angry, cursing, humping hoes, and killing gods for 24/7 again like his Greek version. That character development already done.
If they want to repeat that story again then they should just make a new main character. But at this rate i prefer Cory's project which i heard is a new IP. I love GoW but it could take a break again until they find the right way to continue the franchise.
I wonder if they will make the Egyptian gods white? Chinese? Mexican? If you have a problem with that then you are obviously racist
This rumour was years ago. If true, sure. If different fine with that as well, whatever mythology they want to cover next.
If same gameplay approach as Norse era pass still not interested.
I mean it doesn't really matter since it's gonna be cool as ***** anyway
I was hoping they would be making a new original game and put god of war in the vault for awhile.
@mountain_spider You look at it as a single game. It's not.
Given the series success they could very well do 2 separate story lines, one for closure one for moving forward.
Also
Do remember that they already hinted at his soon-to-come "retirement" with his reply to Atreus:
"We should finish this journey while I still have strength"
To me that says a lot.
What would actually be next for Kratos after Ragnarok?
Growing old, and mostly teaching and advising?
Going forward means leaving Kratos behind as the main (anti) hero. And all that while not entirely completing his arc.
How's that doing any justice to Kratos as a character, after all those years and GoW games?
I have nothing against going forward, but not at the expense of tying up loose ends.
Following in the footsteps of Asgards Wrath 1 and 2. Bring it on. Ancient Egypt is a fantastic setting.
Kratos: screw Yami Yugi
Sounds great. Get rid of Atreus, shave Kratos and GoW series may get back on right track. 🙂
