There’s growing belief that Rockstar may sell GTA 6’s online multiplayer mode separately from its main single player campaign.
This wouldn’t be unprecedented for the label, as it already flogs standalone versions of GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2’s multiplayer modes. It tends to offer these at a later date, however, rather than at launch.
The theory is that Rockstar may be able to reach a great number of players with a cheaper, standalone multiplayer client. While the audience for the developer’s single player campaigns is massive, many just want to play online, and by offering a more affordable entry point it’d be able to grow its player base and make money on lucrative microtransactions instead.
There’s also a theory that Rockstar could present the two versions as a more expensive bundle, essentially achieving the $100 price point that’s been touted by industry analysts, although we’re sceptical of the publisher taking that path.
It should be stressed, none of this has been confirmed or even commented on by Rockstar, and remains online scuttlebutt until the company says otherwise.
We do think Rockstar will eventually sell its multiplayer mode standalone, although we’re not convinced that’s the path it’ll take at launch. Our guess is that GTA 6 will cost $70 for both its single player and multiplayer, although a more expensive Early Access version with additional DLC and cosmetics will be available at a higher price point.
We’ll keep you updated on all things GTA 6 right throughout the year and beyond.

I would prefer it if they sold the story mode seperatly. Don't care about GTA Online at all
Theyre making it sound like this game is being made with concord's concordillion dollar budget if not even more. It's not that special cmon
@mariomaster96 Yes please, then we really get what we pay for.
I'd be delighted if it was or at the least a seperate app, it's really annoying in GTAV that the story isn't the default selection alongside wasting lots of storage on a mode I'll never play
I've never clicked with R* games in the past when it comes to multiplayer so I wouldn't really mind. I can't see them doing this at launch though either. While there are many that are also only interested in the single player content, having the multiplayer included increases the chance that an originally single player only player might give it a try and end up sticking with it.
Sure you could sell multiplayer separately for cheaper but just about everyone is willing to pay $70 (or more depending on who you ask) anyway so why bother?
I’m up for that. I’ve no interest in the online element of it at all. From what I saw of GTA online after playing a few sessions over a few years, it was an absolute cesspit anyway so I’d rather not pay for it.
Wouldn't mind if there was a separate option. Would make the single player platinum more appealing. without a horrid online grind attached.
@Korgon they could still sell the sp at 70 dollars and the mp at say, 50. That’s a lot of money seeing as a lot of people would buy both.
@Judal27 oh you silly. GTA 6 and GTA Online 2.0 lifetime budget is over 2 billion $. It will be special.
I'd be surprised if Rockstar hadn't at least considered it. But I think they'll follow the same model they did with V. Sell the game as one bundle initially, then online becomes available separately later.
And then again on PS6.
And then again on PS7.
There could be the base game for $70 and then online play at an added cost of $20-$30. However what I am most curious about is how will GTA+ be used. Will there be significant or major online features behind a paywall of GTA+. Enough features that could make GTA+ seem essential for online play. Maybe a monthly fee to play online that costs less than GTA+ but is included with GTA+.
Really hope this means a larger single player game like the og san Andreas, gta 4 and 3
I always thought Call of Duty should of done something like this.
If they can keep the trophy list completely separate too and not as DLC, that'd be great.
As someone who doesn't play online, I'd honestly love that.
I'm not normally one to complain about articles but I'm so over news stories about people's speculation about this game. Nothing against PS but man it is getting old I just don't want to hear about GTA until it is out at this point lol. But yet here I am clicking and commenting on the article so
Wouldn't bother me. I hate multiplayer games and never play them. If I could buy the single player separately for less? Yes please.
I haven’t played a GTA since 3 and all of this talk about online isn’t making me want to play this one either.
I agree with the article though, bundle at launch, separate later. Just seems the best way to make the most money, forcing people to buy the part of the game they don’t want to play the part they do. Does work out well for people who do want to play both.
So, are there any other PS5 games releasing this year or nah? 😂
Hopefully Sony doesn’t do that thing where they wait until April 3 to show their games to try and steal the thunder from Nintendo, that’s a long ways off. 😩
I want to know if it will have an aiming reticle I can actually see this time. It would be nice if the characters didn't control like they really needed to use the toilet either.
I’d pass on online anyway.
Sure, why not. It became its own game anyway after all these years.
I really hope they have single player dlc for this game. GTA online should almost be a completely separate package (which this article is alluding to)
@mariomaster96 I wish all game content that was multiplayer as PVP would be sold separately. I personally prefer to just have challenge trophies and story content trophies alone. I just don't like spending the time to achieve success on a single online ranked trophy locked behind a PVP wall myself
I wouldnt be totally surprised if Rockstar aren't the source of these leaks now, just seeing how much backlash there is to each rumour, in order to gauge what price point / model people will accept come launch.
Thing is, if people accept a higher than £70 price point and still buy it, it will open the flood gates for other publishers.
(Given post Covid inflation its inevitable game prices will go up, but not until next gen unless something like this happens in the meantime! )
Hopefully not. Doubt it. If they wanted to be fair, they would sell the story mode for $50 and then $50 for the Online. (they'll never do that)
lol if that happens then i’m down. hate to say it but with the head honchos behind GTAs writing/story being gone , i ain’t interested in the story at all. i think it’s gonna be for the modern audience & suck real bad like cringe row reboot , imo .
I don't think they'll do this because they would be cutting off potential revenue from people who have finished the single player campaign and are looking for more GTA. If the method for trying out GTA Online is right there in the same start menu they get crossover.
I hope so.
I have zero interest on online.
@mariomaster96 That's... exactly what this would accomplish. 😂
@MFTWrecks Not really, they would most likely still sell singleplayer + multiplayer together, with an option to just buy the multiplayer alone. But no option to just buy the singleplayer
@carlos82 I completely agree. And it really annoys me that the GTAV icon on the home screen shows as GTA Online. It's a completely first world problem but it grates on me nonetheless.
I'm genuinely curious why everyone thinks Rockstar is just suddenly going to change how they release their games. Everyone was speculating about an increased price point for GTA 6 because the game is so big, but RDR2 was also enormous for the time it came out and released at the same price point as everything else. Now there's talk of a potential stand-alone multiplayer sold for a premium, which again doesn't make any sense when you consider how Rockstar has made their games over the past 2 decades. They've always come out of the gates swinging with a solid single-player campaign, and either offered multiplayer as a feature or a later addition for free to keep the community engaged. I just don't get why everyone is theorizing that all of a sudden they're going to switch up and not only charge more for the base game, but also double dip on access to the multiplayer, when more likely than not the multiplayer will be a bundled-in or an added later microtransaction fest that emulates what we currently have in GTAV. Honestly feels like people are just saying stuff with no actual basis.
Yes please would save storage space
I hope so. I personally hate playing online with other humans.
I really don't believe anyone would want the online mode but not the story. They will all play some or all of the story at least once.
Plenty who'd want the story and not the online mode though.
However, having completed the story, I'm sure many people would love to streamline their install and recover some hard disk space, by removing the files that are exclusively associated with the single player story.
Why wouldn't it be? That's exactly how it is on GTA5 now... you can buy online separately. It's just that they effectively bundle it automatically for the full game.
@mariomaster96 the reality is that if they sold the SP game separately, it might cost you more than the bundled game... they need you to play the online game, to make all that lovely $$$. That sort of idea needs to be punished... even though common sense should dictate that players should be able to choose.
Obviously just a rumour at this point but if it were to be true I'd be totally on board with it.
I have Zero interest in the Online side of the game so if it keeps the cost of the main game down then that can only be a good thing
@REALAIS If you cant make a game with that much money then its better to stop making games.
If the developers have the opportunity for greed then expect them to take it.
@mariomaster96 same for me too. I’d happily see solo and MP separated. Cannot stand online and have zero interest in it.
@Judal27 It's the most expensive game being made-to-date. Much more money is being put into the game than Concord's budget.
This would make total sense. You can currently buy GTA Online separately from GTA 5 already. That's also the reason why GTA continued to be in the top 10 game sales monthly for years.
