Horizon Zero Dawn, originally planned to be a live action Netflix series, is getting a big budget movie instead.
Announced during CES 2025, PS Productions bigwig Asad Qizilbash confirmed that his department is partnering with Columbia Pictures to bring Aloy’s origin story to life. No casting announcements were made.
The original Guerrilla open world game tells the tale of the aforementioned red head, as she’s raised in a world where human tribes co-exist with mechanical animals. The sci-fi story gradually depicts how the planet came to be inhabited by robotic creatures.
We were always sceptical this particular game would work as a television series, as the budget required to bring it to life would be through the roof. An expensive Hollywood film makes more sense, and we reckon the storyline will appeal to mainstream movie goers. This will probably be a big success.
The question is: who’s your pick for Aloy?

I'm predicting a huge W for this movie, just hope they get the casting right.
Horizon was always better being a movie then a series anyway. Hopefully they will get some real top talent behind it.
Really funny to announce essentially the blandest movie possible straight after the Golden Globes, where movies that actually said something were acknowledged. That being said, Anora was snubbed.
Sony really likes Horizon. Where's my Killzone movie?!
I'd still rather see an anime film of Horizon than a live-action one.
Yeah actually a movie would be better than the cancelled Netflix series, IF well done it can actually be pretty good and successful, but if they tie producers for Madame Web, Venom and Kraven, well… 💀
Nothing will top those moments when Aloy discovers the truth about project Zero Dawn and the fate of the Alphas.
@IOI These are just the replacement for the Spider-Man spin-offs that got canned. Sony really want to chase trends from a couple years back.
Sony is going to brute force Horizon into being as big and beloved as TLOU or die trying.
Might be a better option than doing a series. Curious to see if god of war will remain a tv series or turn into a movie.
@breakneck It’s not a cultural hit though. Nothing about the games has made a cultural impact or is recognisable by people off the street. People know Pikachu, Mario, Sonic, Pac-Man, GTA and the like. No matter how many copies are sold, nobody will care about Aloy. There won’t be references to Varl on sitcoms.
It should’ve been concord 😒
@breakneck The Last of Us is an HBO show. That’s 99% of the reason why anybody unfamiliar with the game tuned in and that logo means far more than whatever brand recognition the original game had. The other 1% is Pedro Pascal. I’d honestly argue that outside of hardcore gaming circles, the original Last of Us had a negligible cultural impact, and the sequel is generally more known for the discourse than the actual game. However, a movie requires more of a hook to draw people to the cinema and unless they cast Sabrina Carpenter as Aloy, I struggle to see how they can get the general public interested. Lara Croft is unfathomably enormous culturally despite her recent trilogy not exactly being a system seller, Horizon might outsell Tomb Raider these days but it will never in a million years hit the same recognisability. No matter how hard Sony try to make it a thing.
Why does the existence of Horizon make people so weird?
Is it really that difficult for other people to grasp that others enjoy it? Why must we be told constantly how “rubbish” it is?
If I don’t like something, I generally choose to not engage with it.
Really hope they cast a red head for Aloy or least have someone dye her hair red. Should be a cool film though if done right though its Sony so its a coin flip if its good or not.
@nessisonett Ah yes the Golden Globes where Hollywood can pleasure itself and give itself awards. Remember when big bad Harv used to buy these awards and when Hollywood cheered when Roman Polanski won an award? Yeah sure i enjoy watching movies and actors i like win awards and i'm thrilled Demi Moore won an award but let's not put the Globes or Oscars on some high pedestal here considering what Hollywood ultimately is, i mean they make the games industry look like saints. Also i do agree Anora deserved more love.
Rose Leslie? Why not have an accent.
Yes bring those mecha dinos on the big screen 🤩
@Juanalf Just because YOU and some people doesn't like Horizon series, doesn't mean everyone is the same.
Maybe an easy pick, but I think Sadie Sink could do Aloy.
I liked Zero Dawn gameplay, I loved Forbidden West gameplay, I thought both games had one of the worst scripts in gaming ever (skipped the later half of the games story). I am curious how a movie will translate from game, hope it will not be as bad as most movies based on games.
Love this, the story in Horizon: Zero Dawn is fantastic. Give me a Thunderjaw on screen and something like ZD's plot and I'm there.
Boil this story and gameplay down to its core and it'll make for quite a generic film. Horizon fans may watch it but for your casual film goer? Meh.
@get2sammyb Yeah i just don't understand why some people are so hostile towards Horizon.
People always asking Sony for a new IP and when Sony produced one that sold and received well like Horizon, some of these people hated to see that Sony keep the IP alive with new games while expanding it into multimedia franchise like comics, movies, figures, etc that can attract more people to try the game.
@AdamNovice I loved the Gameplay had a blast with it i played it for 130 hours for the first game without the expansion. Its he game were i played almost everything without looking up anything online.
@LifeGirl If you took some time to look in the backstory then you would see its quite a great story.
Of all the IP Sony have, why continually push horizon
will be just as successful as the HZD Remaster and the Lego game.😂
By the comments you'd think Horizon wasn't popular yet it's sure talked about a lot. The two main games have sold a combined 33+ million copies, that's more than some other big franchises have done whilst being multiplatform.
For me horizon zero dawn was a fun week but it left no impact on my even if I got the platinum. It just came out when the 'ubisoft formula' was at it's most popular and Sony was at their peak PS4 crest of popularity. Forbidden west in comparison was far to bloated and poorly written.
I appreciate hzd for what it was but it doesn't really have me hooked on the IP. I'll probably still give the movie a wat h as I found zd premise and execution on the history lore in it to be good
@Niktaw 10-15 years ago Rose would have been perfect, but she's 37 now 🤯
@LifeGirl Really? People will go see Alien Robor Cars in droves but not freaking robot dinosaurs? I think it has potential, and a much better story than 90% of other scifi narratives.
I agree with @get2sammyb , why does Horizon cause so many haters to come out of the woodwork and spout misery?
Whos gonna play Sylens?
Sadie Sink is a great shout for Aloy. But let's face it... They're probably going for Zendaya.
@Oram77 Most Christmas music is very good. But after four months of it non-stop I'm very glad to see it stop.
And I have a feeling that a lot of people who dislike Horizon are in the same bracket. Sony will slap this woman's face on absolutely everything.
@LifeGirl
"Sony will slap this woman's face on absolutely everything."
Pretty much that
If the Lego game and the remaster showed one thing, it's that this IP has no future at all, no matter how many times Sony (or rather Hermen) tries to force Horizon on people.
Also, let's not forget that Aloy is another Toxic Girl boss. and apart from the Resetera bubble, the majority of people have absolutely no interest in this crap anymore.
The sooner Totokoi finally cleans up, the better. And with the exception of God of War, all modern Sony IPs are money burners anyway.
@LifeGirl Going to use your analogy, what if genuine fans of Horizon keep seeing/reading people moan about the franchise, which at first is fine (everyone is entiltled to their own opinion) but after 4 months of non stop moaning it gets old very fast....
Given the performance of the Uncharted and GT movie, and considering any collabs with this IP are also kinda on the low side of sales...
I will set the bar to the ground and my expectation to lowest possible.
@get2sammyb @Flaming_Kaiser I've quite enjoyed Horizon and like you say it has an interesting back story. I've found it interesting reading all the in game notes, especially the story behind the Vantage Points, so interesting, could be an OVA or side video story in itself.
SciFi dinosaur robots and a good script and cast and if done right, it'll be awesome. In my opinion of course.
Where the fuc🤔 is killzone.or sly cooper.or resistance sony.im alr tired of horizon.word up son
Sadie Sink would be perfect for the role and I'm happy that it will be a movie instead of a TV show. To be honest I also got fatigued on this IP, but I could never say no to a movie, hopefully it will make the first game justice.
@playstation1995 All those franchise are dead for years. Their last game; Shadow Fall, Thieves in Time, and Burning Skies wasn't sold well especially Burning Skies was a massive flop.
@Starkei Zendaya could do it!
@CielloArc But the Uncharted movie did very well. And I think they were pretty satisfied with Gran Turismo, too.
Not interested. I don't care about any of these film and television projects. Atleast I hope they do well for Sony.
@Gravity_Bear These were the only collectibles i ever went actively looking for. They give some backstory not some useless stuff you dont care about.
@dardel WOAH! I disagree for the first game. Finding all the hidden logs that fleshed out the history really made the storyline feel impactful. Second game, you are spot on! They ruined it with half-baked and predictable villains, the tired contemporary obligation, and lack of innovation from the first game. Great games all around, like you implied.
The games have a very vibrant and impressive world but the story and characters are just so dull in my opinion.
Sony really does seem intent on making people like Horizon.
I hope they cast Erin Kellyman as Aloy ^^
@PuppetMaster they flopped because they all legitimately sucked compared to their predecessors. they were just a single bad game in good franchises
@nomither6 I think you and some people needs to admit the fact that the three franchise; Killzone, Resistance, and Sly Cooper are never been "that good" and profitable in the long run.
And i never see any Killzone fans who boldly says Killzone 1 was a masterpiece or better than Shadow Fall.
In the end, video game is still a business, not charity. If a franchise who sold modest start sold lower and lower to the point they're not even close to break even the budget then it's pretty much game over for that franchise.
@PuppetMaster well i did say “good” franchises, im not saying that they were great or top tier, but they weren’t bad.
how many other good FPS are still around besides COD? battlefield has been on life support
@nomither6 Counter Strike, Doom, Metro, Stalker, Apex, Rainbow Six, Borderland, Bioshock, Killing Floor, System Shock, Payday, Destiny, Shadow Warrior, Far Cry, Metroid Prime and new ones like Trepang, Warhammer Boltgun, Atomic Heart, Valorant, etc.
The upcoming ones like Mouse P.I for Hire, Unrecord, Exekiller, and Den of Wolves also looks promising.
Feels like FPS still has plenty of good games to choose. Oh and i thought this year EA will release a new Battlefield?
I think this might be the most accurate adaptation of any video game ever. It already had a rather bland story tbh so my expectations are down the gutter
@PuppetMaster i’m late, but fair enough. though i was expecting games that had a single player story and multiplayer like sony FPS’s did
I have played Horizon but it never really stuck with me. Very good looking games with a neat premise, yet I bounced off of them all (I tried the first, the second, and the VR game).
However, I think as a movie I would really dig it. The story and world are very interesting to me, and if I'm able to get it in a 2-3 hour digestible format rather than 30 hours+ then all the better.
@get2sammyb
That Gran Turismo movie was honestly pretty great. I enjoyed it immensely.
@nessisonett I knew you would be here. you always got something negative to say about horizon lol. you can't ever hide being a hater
@Juanalf why would they have to brute force something that's already good and has lots of fans though? the only thing is that it doesn't have to father daughter dark story that critics love so much
@dardel if you skipped the latter half of each games story then you have no business having an opinion on a game story you didn't even finish. that's like me trying to judge half a movie when I don't see what the build up and characters are about...it's weird
@Kierant202 the so called ubisoft formula was in tons of games in 2017. how come none of them sold as good or is beloved as horizon zero dawn? see you're trying to downplay it's success but what you're saying it's making sense.
also the map for forbidden west is only a little bit bigger than zero dawn and with faster traversal so explain how it's bloated and what makes it have poor writing? i'm curious
@middyone I quite literally said it was at a time that Ubisoft formula was popular at that time. Far cry 5 came out a year later and was the best selling in the franchise.
I also specifically added that it was the Sony stamp of approval during Sony's peak brand time that contributed to sales.
Horizon forbidden west went so far as to add 'destructible walls' to the minimap with nothing more behind them than a pile of gold. Zero dawn had little to no waste in the general nooks and crannies of the map being actually related to quests and collectibles. That is what I refer to as bloat. Forcing me to traverse the map back to places for these things on my map that serve 0 purpose.
The way Aloy was written in forbidden west felt incredibly forced at least so far as the early game. It got significantly better later but it is on the developers to make early game better.(starfield anyone?) The tonal dissonance between Aloy's urgency in the intro contrasted poorly to the flippant side quests. In zero dawn the framing of gaining allies framed things more organically for the side quests that culminated well at the end.
As for completion rate they are pretty identical. Despite the fact that zero dawn was free for everyone and that can be extrapolated to a massive amount of people who opened the game with no intention of completion.
The higher % platinum rate also leads credence to the sentiment that collectibles in forbidden west were on the higher end of the open world spectrum compared to zd.
@Kierant202 holy essay batman!
by your logic ubisoft formula is still popular and is still used in numerous games. what games are not apart of the "ubisoft formula"?
sony's stamp of approval? lol and why didn't the failed sony games they had at that time not succeed when sony branded them? you're not making any sense. anything but it was a unique game that people loved I suppose.
that "pile of gold" literally helps you buy legendary weapons and items...there's nowhere you can buy it from so it's rare and has many uses. you really sound like you're trying to blame your lack of understanding of how to play the game on the game itself. zero dawn literally has everything forbidden west has lol...you're got to be joking. forbidden west just has quality of life changes and more interesting hidden nooks and crannies like underwater caves and you do find lore inside some of them. I get nostalgia is a drug that most people really don't remember how zero dawn was. I don't understand why you just didn't look up what the purpose is for the stuff you find if it's that hard for you to understand lol. there's a reason for everything
how was it forced in the early game then get's better in the later parts lol. like it was a natural progression bro...you've got to give me something better than that man. also you're on a character arc so obviously she changes throughout.
"The tonal dissonance between Aloy's urgency in the intro contrasted poorly to the flippant side quests"
YOU chose to the side missions so you are to blame buddy plus the side missions fix certain parts of the world so we are still actively saving the earth. if you wanted to brute force through the story why didn't you? you're blaming the game for something you did.
you have to be joking lol. the side characters that joined you we barely saw and had no missions with except 1 with erend about his sister. in forbidden west you have branching unique storylines for each side character that has a character arc. come on bro were you even paying attention? i'm all for opinions but that's objectively false.
completion rate? you really just trying to find anything to downplay it's sucess like I wouldn't be surprised if you're an xbox player. it was free for a month and not free for all the other time it was out for 8 years. you need better excuses.
higher plantium ehh? let's see ok so zero dawn plantium is 27.41% and forbidden west is 37.24%. so by your logic collectibles are better than zero dawn. I agree lol.
