Black Myth: Wukong may just have been the most important PS5 console exclusive of 2024 – and it wasn’t even supposed to be. While some sections of the media still insist Sony signed a secret deal with developer Game Science to exclude the Xbox Series X|S release, there’s never been any evidence to support the hypothesis.
Either way, new comments from co-founder Yang Qi reveal that around 30% of the release’s sales were purchased internationally. Analyst group Niko Partners pegs the total sales at approximately 25 million units, meaning roughly 7.5 million copies were bought outside of China.
That’s a remarkable success.
Even more impressively, Niko Partners’ Director of Research and Insights Daniel Ahmad pegged PS5’s share of the sales at a little over 20%, meaning about five million copies have been sold on Sony’s system alone. That’s truly remarkable.
Speaking in an interview last week, ex-PS Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida explained that part of PlayStation’s approach to China has been to help local developers find success worldwide. With the Chinese market heavily embedded in PC and mobile gaming culture, it looks like it achieved its objectives in this instance.

My opinion on this game has soured over time, it was fun and interesting at times but there is not much original about it. And BOY did it fall off a cliff at the end, the final fight was abysmal
Chinese market ready to haunt western game makers
Turned out to be a great console-exclusive without Sony even having to put in their hands in their… erm… hats.
I feel like Phantom Blade Zero may do the same thing, maybe not to the same level but it will help shift some more consoles.
I love this game. I still need to revisit it and finish it because I started playing PoE2 and I pretty much just kept playing that and a few other games and forgot about wukong. I just love these kind of games.
Monkey of the year
@tameshiyaku NO THAT’S ROBBIE WILLIAMS
Just finished it and loved every minute. Glad it sold well as I’d definitely be down for a sequel!
Great game and either my personal GOTY or the runner up from '24. Glad to see it was a such a success! Hopefully we'll get a sequel in the future. In the meantime though, I'd love to see some story DLC for it.
@nessisonett I'm not a huge fan of Mr Williams, but that film was brilliant
It sold like gangbusters on PC in china. Last i seen it was over 10 million. Throw in the PS5 copies and it’s a highly profitable IP.
@Logonogo well how the final fight goes was predicted from a mile away, it was never gonna be any different,.the story isn't the worst for these type of games ,.and seeing both endings actually adds to the slight mystery of the actual story I think at least, from this games success their will most likely be a part 2, maybe a better story also 🤣
@Oram77 loved WuKong but I'm even more excited for Phantom Blade.
So outside of china 2/3 sold on ps5
@nessisonett true, we've had lots of good monkey media lately
@HonestHick around 25 million total, 17.5 million in China.
And this is the kind of involvement from the chinese playerbase that I expect behind Lost Soul Aside and Phantom Blade Zero.
The PlayStation business in China is booming.
@Logonogo This is definitely a minority take. Also the final fight was amazing. One of my favourite boss battles in years.
@TruestoryYep a minority take to say there was not much original about the game? I honestly can't think of one thing it did that was not borrowing from other games in the genre. I didn't hate it by any means I actually enjoyed quite a lot about it but idk how that could be a rare opinion
I slept on this game due to the difficulty but finally tried it out and my God is it incredible. Also helped that I read Journey to the West back in the 80s so seeing it come to life and being so true to the novel was just icing on the cake. About to finish playthrough number 3. I can't wait to see what else comes out of China now that they are finally opening the floodgates.
I still haven’t bought this game, because it still hasn’t gone on sale once. I’m not surprised to hear it’s doing well, tho.
I liked it much more than any FROM Software Game… it’s great.
5 million copies on Sony's system alone is remarkable? Therefore the other 15 million were on PC?
@tameshiyaku Nah. Donkey Kong.
Sony can't rely on Japan anymore so the decision to spread their wings to China was right.
@CupidStunt Sony still gets 30% of that and they got new players into the PS ecosystem in China/HK/Taiwan so it is a big win.
@CupidStunt 17.5m copies were sold in China. In china almost everyone plays on a PC or phone, PlayStation is less than 1% of the games market. Consoles aren’t popular because the storefronts are heavily controlled by the Chinese government, most games are unavailable.
Well deserved, it is a brilliant game and easily one of my favourite 2024 games, would have made my top 3 had I not had such a huge a back log!
@anon_pel222 CCP be everywhere!
