Civilization VII PS5 PS4 PlayStation

Civilization VII is a wonderfully engrossing game and a worthy successor to the series' long history, but there is some definite room for improvement. Fans have already begun noticing odd quirks in how the game's random maps are generated, which isn't great, considering these games are meant to be infinitely replayed and that its official launch was less than a week ago.

On Reddit, a reasonably stark example was posted, and the problem appears to lie with some of the game's new mechanics, specifically those meant to simulate the feeling of discovery in the Exploration Age (thanks, TheGamer). The default map is a preset called Continents Plus, and it appears to be the worst offender, but Fractal and Archipelago maps also suffer.

Sometimes, shear lines will simply cut off land masses. In addition, the island chains meant to separate civs (the new Distant Lands mechanic) from one another take the form of predictable, vertical strips, safe harbours from the deep ocean tiles that require specific tech to navigate safely.

These oddities and others persist across map presets and, ultimately, aren't really a dealbreaker. Still, once you see it, it's hard not to notice, and we hope developer Firaxis will make changes to the random seed generator that usually helps to keep the experience fresh, even years after release.

What have your Civilization VII random maps been like? Are you happy with the results, or have you encountered your own geographical quirks? Cross your fingers and hope for the perfect seed in the comments section below.
