Despite being due to release this year, we don’t know a lot about Sucker Punch’s hotly anticipated Ghost of Tsushima sequel, Ghost of Yotei.
Boss Brian Fleming wasn’t giving much away in his Creator on Creator chat with Nicolas Doucet of Team ASOBI, but he did touch upon the developer’s approach, and how it always aims to iterate upon the work from its previous games.
“We talk about this at work as a staircase […] and that each game is really building off the work we did from the previous games,” he revealed. “And we want to continue to really push creatively and technically as storytellers [and] as artists.”

While Ghost of Tsushima was a fantastic game overall, it definitely had weak points in terms of gameplay variety, stealth, and storytelling. We’d expect all of these aspects to be improved upon in the sequel, which is perhaps what Fleming is referring to here.
Which elements of Ghost of Yotei are you most excited for? Which aspects of the previous game do you think Sucker Punch can improve upon? Let us know in the comments section below.

@Frmknst No thanks. That approach works for KC2, but that kind of thing would be a step backwards compared to GoT.
@Hylian-Unlikey I tend to agree, but I’ll wait for more info before making my final decision.
Likely won’t be at launch for me this time around, sadly.
@Frmknst Im all for realism but not to the point where it's tedious like red dead. Picking up crafting materials without having to get off your horse is good.
I would love a more reactive world in the sequel, similarly to how Red Dead did chance encounters and character interactions. Combat was excellent in the first, so just build off of that, add some more tools, have more intricate animation cycles, etc.
Like many, I was disappointed that Jin isn't the protagonist, but his story was pretty much finished and we don't really know anything about the new protagonist, so I'm keeping an open mind.
Very much looking forward to learning more!
@Hylian-Unlikey May I ask why such a hard stance? Even if they could have fleshed out Jin's story, what's wrong with exploring a new era/protagonist? The same was said with regard to Red Dead before the sequel came out and most people fell in love with Arthur. Why not keep an open mind?
I am just excited to see what they come up with. Breaking my no preorder rule either way.
Excited for the female lead as it could open to interesting settings but (and I know I am a minority) I didn’t find the first game anything too special - it was a solid game for me, but that’s it
@wildcat_kickz The combat was pretty weak though, 4 combat styles but they are only effective to one enemy type each. I do hope that they expand on those 4 styles though.
@Hylian-Unlikey I liked Jin as lot, too. But I totally understand the open world burnout. I'm a huge sucker for the historical Japanese setting, so I think that's doing a lot of the heavy lifting for the sequel in my eyes. I just wasn't feeling Rise of the Ronin, so I'm hoping this one fills the hole that game left for me.
@Nepp67 I think combat was pretty fun! It was simple for sure, but really flashy and satisfying.
@Frmknst So make it tedious and less fun?
Id probably pass on Ghost 2 if that's the direction they went.
@Frmknst No thanks, that would make it very tedious.
I’m sure this will be great at release and a solid 8 out of 10 for me. I’m not expecting anything like the jump between Witcher 2 and 3 or kdc1 and kdc2. Sony have already set the template for open world sequels with the Spider-Man and horizon games. They’re not going to break the bank or reinvent the wheel, they want to maximise their return and minimise the risk. This will be a slightly more refined version of the original, which is fine.
I enjoyed Ghost of Tsushima but it certainly leaned far too heavily on bandit camps and many of it's side quests were a bit pants but the core gameplay was really good, so if they can just build on that in more interesting ways, I'll be happy
I just came back to delete my previous comment because it was off topic but I can’t get to it to delete it because the pop up add is in the way. Ok got it now but not sure if I can post this one b/v I’m typing blind.😩
Love videos like this. I think it would be cool if there is a return of the inFamous morality system. Though, yes in Second Son, it didn't really do too much to the story, I still think it is a really cool gameplay feature that adds so much reactivity and depth to the characters, story and world.
Will absolutely miss Jin Sakai.
This looks cool, I played the first one up until the point you leave the first main area on ps4 at launch and then stopped playing it. I don’t know why.
I think I need to pick it up again on ps5 as it’s in the sale at the moment
@Frmknst hell no. Let games be games. Horizon Forbidden West did put an option to skip pickup animations thou. So I guess keep the option?
@dskatter I dont even like it in KC.
There's a reason they don't make games like Shenmue anymore and 3 flopped. Its boring to do things realistically in games like you would in real life.
The first one was incredibly boring to me. I'll wait until they show us something, but I don't think this one is for me.
I think that the game should be like KCD 2, feudal Japan! What that could mean is:
I could use a small setting (big enough map), and more emphasis on who inhabits the world. Make everything unique or cut it out of the story. Allow for small stories to be discovered through talking and living with people.
The gameplay should be more arcadey and fluid than KCD 2 of course. But a ronin should care for his/her sword, equipment and clothes, like KCD2!!!
But yeah, keep side activities of extremely high quality but don't make it so you have to do a lot of different things a lot of times. That's just wasting efforts that should go into the quality of the game.
GoT was maybe my favorite new IP last gen. Sucker Punch is right up there with the S Tier devs.
What I'd love most would be a implementation of a dynamic nemesis system like in shadow of Mordor across various dojos which are non-lethal and sometimes escalate into fatal duels. Also a dynamic reputation amongst bandits would be neat. Advancing through your interactions with swordsmen and schools is a better way to believably level up rather than the usual open world collectothons.
I am worried about this one.
@Frmknst I know you were just making a pie-in-the-sky wish, but what you're describing would be excellent for a different IP, one that's not already established with gameplay expectations. I love where your head's at, though. Some of my favorite moments in GoT were the quiet, serene ones. If a game could lean into the roleplay elements of historical Japanese life, I would be over my heels.
Maybe have quests that revolve around haiku composition, meditation, etc., while keeping things moving with excellent combat and a Kurosawa-like story.
I haven't played it yet, but I hope KC:D2 showed developers that there is a lane for the more grounded RPG. Not everything needs spells, dragons, or out-of-place technology.
I know I'm in the minority, but sometimes I really crave that slow-burn game.
I'm excited for this game only because the way the first game was built was phenomenal. The lack of useless UI elements, natural ways of indicating where to go, being led places by animals appearing in the environment... Add in how absolutely gorgeous it was, especially with the physics and the way they affected leaves and such.
Just loved the game for all of its parts and how they came together to create a truly action-forward and cinematic experience.
All that and I get to play as a female protagonist? It's a day 1 purchase for me.
I really don't understand why people want another game about Jin. His story is over l, he fought off Mongol invasion, do you want a fanfic about another invasion instead of historical game?
Sucker Punch is one of if not the most consistently great developers in the business so I'm in no matter what. Loved Tsushima and I fully expect to love Yotei.
@Dalamar A sequel featuring an older Jin would of been cool to me
Loved GoT. I felt like a sword fighting bad ass by the end. Loved Jin’s story
Grindy? A little but I completed almost all of it which is very rare for me. Hopefully a more refined but similar type of thing for GoY

Gender-swapping a protagonist is not pushing creativity anything, it's creatively bankrupt thinking and will be the undoing of this title regardless how much water the press wants to carry. It's also clearly one of the factors why Japan has taken control away from the west when it comes to PlayStation, the west has run out of ideas.
GoT was so much fun I "accidentally" platinumed it (after the credits I looked at the trophies and had 3 left to achieve), so I'm all in for Yotei!
Remember: No hype and NO PREORDERS!!!
@Fishnpeas (#38) you guys are yapping on and on and on. Just leave the game out of your basket and continue on with your life. Gender swapping would be Giana Sakai btw, this plays decades after Tsushima ffs
@rjejr (#19) try out the browser with the lion's head that is very --brave--! You're welcome
@PerpetualBoredom Yep, that's not any form of argument. It doesn't change the fact they did it.
@Fishnpeas (#42) that's the weakest comebck I've seen in a while plus factually untrue. I hope you can find happiness in your life.
@PerpetualBoredom “Brave”
I briefly tried Brave but have settled on DDg b/c it seems to work on every platform - my iPad, Android phone, Win PC and Mint Linux Cinammon PC I use for, uh, stuff. My life got hacked a couple of weeks ago, trying to migrate away from Windows and Google. Harder than it sounds.😩
Thanks though. 👍 DDg does seem to be doing the trick, treating my iPad and phone as mobile devices. I think Chrome was trying to treat this place as a desktop, stuff was moving and resizing everywhere, just a mess. Kinda like my life. 😝
@PerpetualBoredom omg so it turns out DDg doesn’t work on Linux, Mint or other. So I decided Brave like you said, I already have it on my1 Linux box. But I can’t seem to import bookmarks or passwords, which isn’t going to fly for me either. Thinking about just giving up and going back to Firefox like the old days.😩
@rjejr that's a pity. Fortunatly I only use it on my mobile, so no ptoblems there!
@PerpetualBoredom The problem with just using it on your phone that a lot of these browsers seem to have is not being able to export and import bookmarks and passwords. I have over 100 each, starting over from scratch isn’t really an option. I mean I do need to go through and change all of my passwords but I need my bookmarks to recall where all of those passwords are.
I do have it all figured out now, Brave everywhere, everything synced from my Linux desktop. It is weird not using Windows at all, going to take some getting used to. Wish I could stop using Google but it seems to be the best Maps app. Apple is still trash, but they are trying.
I just want this all done so I can get back to gaming again.😩
