GTA 5 has now sold more than 210 million units since its PS3, Xbox 360 release in 2013, Take-Two revealed in its latest quarterly earnings call. An unfathomable statistic on its own, what's perhaps even more mindblowing is that five million copies of the game were sold in the final three months of 2024 — enough to see the vast, vast majority of other titles be considered a significant success across their entire lifetime. GTA 5 managed it in roughly 90 days.
The good news continues for Rockstar Games, as Red Dead Redemption 2 has also reached a new sales milestone of its own with 70 million copies purchases. It's an increase of three million units across the previous quarter, which again would be enough to turn a good profit for almost any other game.
Two of the best-selling video games of all time, it's easy to see why there's such a big hunger for GTA 6, which Take-Two has again reiterated will release for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2025. The firm is said to feel "really good" about the Fall 2025 release window the game currently has, but acknowledges there's "always a risk" of a delay. You can learn about everything we know so far about the game through the link.

Sales dont meet our expectations...

Some of those will be people who bought the game on separate console generations. But even assuming (for the sake of argument) that everyone who is interested in GTAV has triple dipped on the 7th, 8th and 9th generation versions of the game, that would still be something like 70 million unique players.
How big this behemoth of a franchise is truly boggles the mind.
I recognize you always have a new generation of gamers coming up (a 17 year old was 6 when it first arrived on consoles), but I really cannot believe people are still buying it. When you think of the entire ecosystem of how many PS4, PS5, Xbox and PC gamers are out there, it has to be something like 80% or more of gamers who own a copy.
To quote Shawn Layden:
"There are some titles that can actually change weather patterns - GTA is a franchise that can change weather patterns"
I guess it's much easier to sell millions of copies of a game when it's roughly £10-£15 nowadays.
@Atreus97 its easy to sell millions of copies when it came out on PS3, PS4 & PS5. Price does help but it was sold at full price basically until 2018/19
Sorry folks but I'm one of these 'multi buy' people now. I played it on Xbox 360 originally and with the next entry around the corner and also because I now have a decent PC, I got tempted to play the story again - and it doesn't disappoint! The immersion and writing are still top class in my opinion. It can feel a bit mechanically wonky at times as does Red Dead 2 but it's mostly forgivable considering their age.
Yep I double dipped on ps4 after ps3 mainly just to try out the first person mode!
For all those comments that always say "I don't get the hype" or "Why does PushSquare post many updates or rumors or conspiracy theories", well, GTA 5 is the biggest game of all time whether you think so or not. GTA 6 release will break record numbers.
I've never played it but I understand why it sold so many copies.
For context, the single best selling games console of all time is the PS2 on 160 million units. This one game (due to people double and even triple dipping) has sold more units than any console ever produced.
And GTAV is not even that good.
It’s in there court to screw things up with gta6. But these numbers are extreme. If anything, this is why the gaming industry is currently boom and bust, they are all driving for these numbers. Which are unobtainable for most publishers. The question is, no matter the hype, sales, or whatever - gta6 has the most pressure any game has ever had. If screw it up, then take two goes
I am a double dipper! I played it on release on PS3 and bought and played it again last year on PS5.
This made me Google best ever selling games. GTA is second only to (unsurprisingly) Minecraft at 300m. The most surprising is third place. Wii sports, which only ever came out on the original Wii.
I enjoyed GTA 5 but i don't think it's as good as San Andreas, Vice City, or 4. So i'm surprised 5 sold these many copies.
It’s cheaper for people to get another copy of the game with shark card deals attached than the shark cards alone.
It’s a nonsensical total
Grand theft auto 5 the g.o.a.t. 🐐 👑.word up son
@Balosi the original wii sold like candy
@PuppetMaster probably because of gta online
@nomither6 Yeah possibly. I played GTA online a bit on PS3 when the game just out and it wasn't fun. Not to mention one match tooks really long to load. I'm surprised a lot of people like it.
Lots of double and triple dipping obviously, but still really impressive! GTA V didn't grab me as much as some of the earlier games but I can see the ongoing appeal.
If you don't have shares in Take Two interactive this year, you are missing out on a great opportunity. Went up nearly 13% yesterday with all this news and when the GTA 6 release date is said, it will increase and when it actually releases, you will be thanking yourself.
A lot of bad takes
I never bought it not because its but because its not my kind of game its all the same. I brought Vice City and GTA 3 that was enough for me.
@SillyBoyJudas Im not a big fanof GTA but if i dont want to read it i will skip the article like a normal person. But to fair people complain about that with a lot of games.
