Last month's PC ports of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 allowed the two former PS5 exclusives to chart once again in the USA, selling well enough to earn the third and sixth positions for January 2025 respectively. The best-selling game of the month was a carryover from December, with Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 again situated highest.
For hardware, the PS5 was once again the best-performing box of January 2025 in terms of both units sold and dollars. However, compared to 2024, spending on PS5 hardware is down by 38 per cent. This is a downturn reflected across the entire industry, with Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch systems also selling less. Breaking down the spending stats, Mat Piscatella reports that purchases of the upgraded PS5 Pro have now fallen behind the pace of the PS4 Pro across the same time span.
What's important to note when comparing to last year's stats, however, is January 2024 covered a five-week span while last month there were only four weeks of consumer spending to track. As such, the timings don't quite line up accurately when the data is compared.
Returning to the top 20 best-selling games of January 2025, the only new release to chart was Donkey Kong Country Returns HD. For Sony, Astro Bot and Helldivers 2 kept their place in the top 20, and It Takes Two saw a huge surge in purchases off the back of Split Fiction's reveal and imminent release. It went from 82nd place to 20th in a month.

Matt Piscatella didn't mention the 4 weeks tracking compared to 5 from last year in his tweet, I wonder why.
It almost seems like he was trying to make those declines seem worse than they actually were also Indy not charting is confirmation it was a massive sales flop.
Glad Astro, Spiderman and Rebirth are doing well though.
@MrMagic Yes he did: "Please note that the January 2025 tracking period consisted of 4 weeks, as compared to January 2024’s 5 week tracking period."

@LiamCroft @LiamCroft Yeah I never saw his follow up tweet or clicked on the slide.
Really pleased to see Rebirth doing well, hopefully Squire Enix will realise their "expectations" are way too high.
@LiamCroft I doubt many people will click on the slide though so he should have mentioned it in his first tweet.
Nice, I can only hope Stellar Blade gets the same success once it drops on PC.
@MrMagic what are you talking about.?
Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is the only December release to chart | Circana.

It was also played by millions on Gamepass, because it doesn't cost you anything more for First-party games Day One.
@Rog-X That's just December and it only charted at 14th lol now it has dropped out of all the sales charts completely including the Xbox chart and it flopped on Steam.
Sure it was played by a couple of million on Gamepass but so did Hi-fi Rush and that doesn't really mean that much anyway unless it generated a lot of new subs, which it obviously didn't or Microsoft would have shouted it from the rooftops.
@MrMagic true i remember i played highfi there with a 2 week gamepass trial. Played redfall for 5 min just to see. And that counted as a player
Go go Astro Bot ☺️
Guess PC helped sales after all. Also PS5 pro sales will fall off a cliff, all the hardcore already bought it pretty much and casuals don’t even know it exists.
@MrMagic Indy also had a mere 8k players on steam at launch which is pretty poor for a brand new Bethesda game. People can keep bringing up gamepass as an excuse for poor sales but the amount of gamepass subscribers isn't even half of the total Xbox and PC player base. Indy will find the most success on playstation in a few months time.
@Shad361 its also $700. Alot of people left waiting for price cuts to upgrade from last gen. Maybe some people also saving to but switch 2 this year
Interestingly as per SteamDB FF7 Rebirth hasn't even sold a million units on PC. So a weak software month seems to have given it a bump in the charts.
Gives some bones to my theory that they released the game at a horrible moment last year (in between Segas big JRPGs and just before Capcoms big JRPG).
Spider-Man 2 impresses me though. Since launch I don't think it's ever gone out of the top 20. They easily have to have crossed 15 million units at this points.
Also, Go Astro!
It Takes Two never ceases to amaze. What a great success story. They have had it on every subscription service and gave it away on PS+ Essential and it still sells
A game selling more than it would on one system? Who'd have thought that eh
@MrMagic If you are such a PlayStation zealot why are you mentioning the Indiana Jones game in your comments about an article about former exclusives charting on PC. Does it make you feel better about yourself? I never understand people praying to a console under a TV.

First it was dragon quest now final fantasy are doing better than expected 👌
I was apart of the It Takes Two increase because of how good Split Fiction looked at The Game Awards. Nice to see I wasn't the only one who became interested in it off of the hype of Split Fiction's announcement.
