Monster Hunter World has become a seemingly eternal money-spinner for Capcom, as the action RPG continues to post impressive sales numbers seven whole years after its release.
The impending launch of Monster Hunter Wilds has no doubt sparked this latest sales bump, with IGN Japan reporting that World somehow managed to shift 1 million copies within the last three months of 2024.
Again, that's crazy for a near decade-old game — and it brings World's total sales up to a ridiculous 28 million, or thereabouts. It remains Capcom's all-time best selling title.
Naturally, with the release of Wilds later this month, Capcom will be expecting World's sales to finally grind to a halt. But even then, it'll be interesting to see just how well Wilds does for itself while using World as a comparison.
Can Capcom pull it off all over again with Wilds? Honestly, we'd be somewhat surprised if it is able to match its predecessor's success — it always felt like World, and the series' return to PlayStation, was perfectly timed.
Do you think Wilds will end up on the same trajectory as World? Did you ever expect World to be such a colossal hit? Go back to the Guiding Lands in the comments section below.

World was amazing.
Bounced off it first time then second time it clicked and bam over 1000hrs.
Majority single playered it, the end game grind was good too.
I don’t think wilds will be as successful but that’s because the way we consume games has changed
Wilds is going to be completely huge, I think there is absolutely no doubt about that. I suspect it will break 1m concurrent players on Steam. Who knows how high it can go? When things take of these days they really take off, the hype becomes a self-sustaining cycle.
Just upgraded my GPU for this game. Cant wait. Plus I wont need to upgrade any components for another few years (And that's the most expensive one). Currently getting over PS5 Pro performance in the beta, great stuff.
Back when I was falling in love with the game on PS2 I just knew it was something incredibly special. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever expect it to blow up this big.
Thank you for all the beautiful memories past and future, MonHun ❤️🥲
I've been playing through World over the last few weeks in anticipation for Wilds, and I'm having a lot of fun with it. I remember dumping about 80 hours into the game when it released and kinda dropped it. Glad Wilds got me back into it cause it's so good.
I played for 500 or even more hours im not certain the game was fantastic.
Monster hunter world is one of the best games ever made.wilds is going to be really good also.word up son
It's understandable that World is baby's first Monster Hunter. What is sad that World is baby's first, favorite and only Monster Hunter and those babies want all future games to be like World.
I actually dislike world/icerborne to this day. Mostly cause i like playing single player and the single player on it was miserable.
Multiplayer it should be fine as it's easier.
It was Rise Sunbreak that got me in. Great game.
Should I play World before I play Wilds? I've never played Monster Hunter but I'm curious.
@Contimaloris nahh you can start wherever with these 👍 they've been getting more beginner-friendly so Wilds might be the better option to start with.
World's was definitely the best game of last generation. Deserves all it's credit.
@Nem you're very wrong. Maybe because rise was easier, especially single player, maybe that's why you enjoyed it more.
@Cutmastavictory I can also say you are very wrong. At this time i am not interested in debating people over what is hard and easy.
I play solo. I didn't just play Rise but Sunbreak. I killed primal malzeno and did Qurio quests.
Yes, it helps cause i can get other AI hunters to help me when i'm playing on my own instead of just me alone (though i had to go through all of Rise and some of sunreak solo with my cat/palamute) and having the full focus of the monster, though i still had it most of the time.
I don't care if you consider it "easy", i consider it fun. I am not wrong cause most people play these games in multiplayer which in itself makes them a lot easier than solo. The scaling in world iceborn was such that solo is harder than multiplayer (you have to do more damage per player as solo than with 2, 3 or 4 while having the monsters full focus), which is why many of you that are fans of world iceborne don't get the issue i and many others have with it.
I don't care that it's "easier" in your opinion. Easier is fine with me if i am having fun. I don't have the "souls" masochism gene.
Been playing since the PSP days and World was the game I had been waiting for. It was such a great addition to the series and I could finally stop playing claw style.
@Nem Like many others I had no issue playing World solo. It was easier and more accessible than the old games for sure. Also Souls isn't masochistic. Ninja Gaiden is. Devil May Cry on DMD is. NUR+ runs of GoW games kinda is. Souls is just a learning curve that can also be circumvented by stats and gear.
@JohntheRaptor In NG and DMC you do not get as punished and you have a difficulty level for players that aren't good at action games to complete the story.
Regardless i disagree with that premise. I think Souls likes are worse than action games. I do prefer the faster gameplay and responsiveness of the action games though.
Anyways... it's not like i didn't beat World. But i only played world after Iceborne was out, so we might've played different versions. The clutch claw being an especial pain point. Iceborne was the worst one where i got sick of the whole thing. But world is not great either towards the end. Good for you if you enjoyed it. I loved Rise (minus rampages) and sunbreak. Sunbreak is just chef's kiss.
Anyways i played the beta of wilds some more and got more used to the game and the weapons that work best. I may give it a try. It does look like trash on performance mode, but fidelity mode is ok, oddly enough. I am curious to see where this will land at launch cause the game is very unstable on the beta.
