Microsoft says it wants to beat the PS6 on hardware capabilities, as it slowly but surely begins to bring all of its software to multiple platforms. But in an interview with Videogamer, Xbox creator Seamus Blackley has argued that the key to selling consoles is original content, as technological advancements hit diminishing returns.
“I remember seeing Gran Turismo when it came out for the PS1, and I had to buy it just because I couldn’t believe what was happening on the screen,” he remembered. “That was compelling and that doesn’t exist anymore. There’s no more graphics that make you feel that way.”
Blackley continued that the key to selling consoles now is creating unique experiences that you can’t get anywhere else.
“I think that if you want to win you have to find those other things,” he said. “You have to create an experience where people when they see it they have to have it. Because what you’re really doing is you’re trying to suck a huge grape through a straw, you’re trying to get them to spend several hundred dollars to buy a games console in order to play a $70 game.”
Blackley left Xbox all the way back in 2002, and distanced himself from the current state of Xbox.
“How they managed that brand and the story going forward is not my f**king fault,” he exclaimed. “I would not have done things the same way. I don’t know if it would have been more or less successful, but I certainly think that this narrative around being more powerful is not helpful today.”
It’ll be interesting to see how both Sony and Microsoft approach the next generation. As mentioned above, the latter has already committed to more hardware, while PlayStation has effectively confirmed it’s currently working with AMD on its next console.
We tend to agree that the race for more power has hit diminishing returns, and we do respect Sony’s efforts with the DualSense to improve the overall sensory experience of gaming. But it feels like, in order to meaningfully transition players to next-gen hardware, both companies are going to have to be particularly innovative with their next set devices.

Thank god they are starting to realise! We don’t need 10 year production cycles for games just so they can make fractional graphical upgrades.
Go back to basics>focus on gameplay>profit
That they only realise now is why they lost. Hopefully focus as a publisher should increase the quality of their games.
Music to my ears.
@Gr8VngnzN4esAngr once a company realise they've been chasing their own tails for too long and realise what made them a failure is usually a good sign. Somebody the other day said Microsoft was no longer competition but I strongly disagree with that sentiment. If Microsoft start producing great games again on a new affordable console with a better business plan regarding subs then I think Sony will find itself in a fight it might not want. Its a win win for us gamers.
He’s spot on, although I’d contest that graphics are incapable of providing that ‘wow’ moment these days, it’s more that devs are pushing for visual fidelity with sterile art directions. Even something like Driveclub looks more impressive in some aspects than modern racing games due to the focus on specific graphical flourishes. But yeah, I’d love to see innovative gameplay advances due to hardware, which is what I think Insomniac nailed with Rift Apart even if it was underused. GTA VI I expect to have technical wizardry in terms of population density combined with AI. Gameplay innovation would be the ‘wow’ moment for me, and it’s what I felt playing Death Stranding for the first time and wandering around with entirely new mechanics to mess around with, as opposed to games utilising one of about 3 control schemes.

@Gr8VngnzN4esAngr @Boxmonkey This is a guy who left Microsoft in 2002. His comments aren't indicative of contemporary Xbox's stance on graphics as a selling point.
As for this being the reason Microsoft lost, that proposition ignores that Sony has consistently put out uber-expensive, graphically intensive games. Microsoft has been mostly experimental and supportive of AA for most of their existence in the gaming space; a focus on purely pushing cutting edge visuals is absolutely not why their hardware is struggling.
A lack of must-play exclusives is why Xbox struggled. The fact Sony delivered them while pushing graphics shows how lacking Xbox have been with software.
@LifeGirl I get what ur saying but remember xbox marketing for like 5 years of the world's most powerful console since the one x
Tech companies need something to make the previous generation outdated so you buy the new thing. Your television isn’t big enough, your tablet isn’t thin enough, your amp needs to be one louder, your phone can’t recommend a nearby vegan restaurant that allows pet gorillas.
At a certain point we as customers start to question the reason why it needs to be twice as special when it’s already doing a better job than we need. Capitalism collapses and anarchy reigns.
Nintendo has known this fact since 2006.

Of course he is right. But graphics also SELL especially to the masses. It doesn’t have to be either/or, you can have both
I will forever stand by this: game play is ALWAYS more than pretty graphics.
@LifeGirl Yeah I'm right with you on that one, I'm sure we'll get to the point where people will start crying over games not being able tohit 120fps somewhere down the line as well. Graphics/resolution mean nothing to me. I certainly won't replay the likes of the Last of Us or Horizon just because the graphics have been improved. My time on earth is limited
From the "WOW!" experiences of Tomb Raider on the PS1 to Uncharted on the PS3, the upgrades in graphics have definitely been slowing down over the past decade.
To be honest, telling the difference between PS4 to PS5 is difficult - just that the PS5 can chuck a few more pixels around a bit quicker but the design of games haven't really improved.
The fact most of people have previous console so they are used to it's system and have some backlog.
@nessisonett too true. Driveclub was a real looker and not because of the graphics but more the style of the graphics. It was larger than life and oozed style. Give me that over the ultra realistic but ultimately boring looking grab turismo games.
@sanderson72 PS5 basically enabled 60fps for PS4 games really I also feel it like a console refresh more than anything because it has lacked PS5 titles.
But Microsoft are to blame because of the disaster that was Xbox One they had it a great following with Xbox 360 and blew it all away

I think we all know that graphics have been leveling off and I've been saying since mid PS4's cycle it's becoming more about immersion than the shininess of the pixels, console gamers will start to understand the benefits of higher refresh rates and VRR once that tech is standard in most TV's. Buddy of mine got a new TV because he's getting a (my old) PS5 but it's only 60hz so he still won't get the full benefits (if he'd have rung me I'd have pointed him in the direction of TCL because they're doing really well right now).
I have always owned both since the original Xbox in the early 00’s.
Why would I buy another Xbox now its exclusives are on Sony’s system?
Answer: 99% of games are on both platforms. The only games I can’t play on Xbox are the one or two Sony exclusives I’m still interested in.
Therefore if the next Xbox delivers a significant performance advantage over PS6, that’s where I’d buy my games.
Exactly the game reason I ditched my PS5 for a Pro.
I attach a lot of value to games running decently and unfortunately the PC market has gone to hell so I’m hoping to extract myself from that.
The next Xbox could still have a place under my TV, but it can’t be another XSX where there is a performance advantage on paper, but that never translated to actual game performance.
It's about bloody time. Really, I know a lot of people (myself included) who are perfectly happy to play on a 1080p TV/ monitor. I don't need 'the best' graphics; I want fun, original, gameplay and innovative ideas.
I do believe they are important you don't really want to play a game that looks like garbage but I the same time I think graphics have peaked they need to stop trying to push past the obvious cap that we've reached and it being a massive focus is why we're waiting like half a decade for a single game.
Why can't we have both , why do we have to sacrifice one for the other
I strongly favour performance (min locked 60fps) over graphics, but a game still needs to have a nice, clean, look.
A good looking game sells, and having bought a Pro at launch like many, many others - the draw of a good looking game, that utilises the Pros additional power well, is a very real thing.
That said, certain games do go too far, and end up looking and performing horribly imo. Ray tracing does absolutely nothing for me unless 60fps and Image quality can be preserved and as far as I remember, only insomniac have ever acheived this.
Nintendo is still around, despite being a generation behind in terms of computing power since the Wii. I think it speaks for itself.
Really. Because yes. It's why Haven Call of the King, SW Battlefront 3 and No Man's Sky were impressive. Why Ratchet Crack in Time was & Rift Apart wasn't. Why some consoles gimmicks were exciting, landed or not.
Why some games had good motion controls or good weird worlds. Good scale or ideas in Toy Story 2/Mushroom Men, Deadly Creatures and not in Metamorphosis. Among others.
Why some games levels, controls or gameplay was more memorable not just artstyle/storylines. If gameplay is as memorable as the structure not lyrics, not just oh it has these instruments in a song, the structure, you know you have a good compelling song and game right? It's catchy isn't it?
Can someone tell these companies and weak creativity staff Indies, AA, AAA, publishers and developers demands or lack of good ideas (and PS3/30 15+ year later design as well to actually try harder, I'm bored and not buying your pathetic products, even some ambitious ones I'm skeptical but still more interested in) I want console gimmicks/good gameplay. Not a console to be the equivalent of a new GPU to sell. XD
You can put them on any platform but I didn't buy them/play them on Xbox, won't any other platform because the content sucks. Worlds suck. Movesets suck and everything else is just so safe/bland. Convince me, you haven't yet. Even Indies vary of appealing.
So that's why I'm buying Nintendo games or third parties with gameplay first let alone more retro games then both combined. That's never heard of/non-nostalgic ones too and their quality/mechanics/level design/movesets and modes/event types. Imagine that me seeking those and not seeing them in modern games hmm.
Why is that Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo at times with some core design elements or third parties with weak ideas I can come up with more in a few seconds cough Foamstars, yeah tweaking elements of other games is so lazy and noticeably hilarious.
PS3/360 games tried harder then this.
PS1/2 platformers and racing tried harder then that.
Even with branching out into other genres, it's been worth it but only marginally due to their appearances these gens anyway.
I wouldn't be buying them for their execution/researching them let alone a handful of Indies/AAs in the modern era as rarely as I care about some.
When I beat and committed to playing more retro games then anything in 2024 because it was so boring/not a compelling year for music, games or tv shows, you got very little if any sales from me companies wanting modern games sales. Try harder.
That's why Sony/Microsoft first party don't appeal to me at all with their bland gameplay, worlds, movesets and level design with graphics/story first mentality. XD
I remember the IPs but don't play them. It's like me with Minecraft potions/enchantments. I remember them, I never use them.
@Gr8VngnzN4esAngr not really, the average PlayStation gamer isnt buying a PlayStation for exclusives most just play the same sports game , cods, fortnite etc
I would disagree who wants to play a game looking like it was made for the Xbox 360 🤣
It’s about a correct balance of graphics and content and it really depends on many factors form cinematic, style of game. Open world va linear etc. what is the character development like?
I think this creator maybe is too used to a driving game lol and needs to look at the variable before making blanket decisions.
If your only making a game then yeah he may be correct
