SNK’s decision to include soccer superstar Cristiano Ronaldo as a playable character in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is bemusing franchise fans.
The former Manchester United and Real Madrid footballer is part of the upcoming PS5 and PS4 game’s base roster – this isn’t a pre-order bonus, unlockable costume, or promotional clip.
But some players just can’t wrap their head around it.
“Did the April Fools’ Day joke video leak early?” one asked on Reddit.
“It’s probably just an April Fools’ Day joke,” another posted earnestly on ResetEra.
To which someone replied: “I don’t know, it's an awful lot of effort for a joke. From what I can tell from the gameplay trailer, he seems to have a complete move set – even if it does look awkward and possibly added at the last minute.”
Just to be crystal clear about this: Cristiano Ronaldo is a playable character in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves. This is not a joke – it’s real.
If you visit the game’s official website, you can learn a little more about the “character”. You can even see his command list, which includes slide tackle attacks and the “siu” celebration.
His fighting style is pitched as a combination of football and martial arts, and he’s described as an “unstoppable force”.
“One of the top football players in the world,” his blurb explains. “He uses his time off to visit South Town to hone his new football skills. The various techniques he has developed playing football make him an unstoppable force, even to seasoned fighters.”
Obviously, SNK is predominantly owned by the Misk Foundation, a Saudi Arabian firm founded by Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman.
Ronaldo is, of course, currently playing for Saudi Arabian team Al-Nassr, where he’s one of the highest paid athletes in the world. His activities extend beyond just football, however, as he’s also become a bit of an ambassador for the country.
One interesting wrinkle here, though, is that the dev’s depicted Ronaldo in his Portugal kit by default and not his Al-Nassr uniform. We wonder if that’ll be an alternative outfit for him to use in the game.
Ultimately, this is going to bring a lot of exposure to Fatal Fury, which doesn’t have the same brand recognition as Street Fighter or Tekken.
You’re probably going to see the likes of IShowSpeed – an enormous Ronaldo fan – streaming the game on social media, which will raise its overall profile and hopefully sell more copies.
From that perspective, we’re not against CR7’s inclusion. Actually, to be honest, we think it’s kinda hilarious.

After Mortal Kombat having irrelevant characters other games are following. Still, if I casually came around those news I would be sure that it was an April Fools joke that leaked... But it seems to be legit.
It's odd as hell but you can't argue against the promotional bump the game will receive thanks to his inclusion.
Heck my nephews who don't even play fighting games asked me about this yesterday so it's clearly reaching new audiences. It will interesting to see if it translates into sales.
I didn't enjoy the beta like I had hoped, but the game was still a buy. After this nonsense? Not a chance.
Real people in fighting games is weird, because you're going to have three camps.
1: Gamers who don't care.
2: Gamers who do care and want to play as the real person because they're fans.
3: Gamers who do care because they hate the real person and would like to simulate eviscerating them.
I'm wondering if anyone mentioned the folks in camp 3 when they were discussing this idea with Ronaldo.
@Wiceheid You missed No. 4 - people who don't want what is a very obvious cynical ploy to bring in more consumers by including a fella (who has nothing to do with martial arts) who is paid almost four million euros per week to be really good at kicking a ball included in what is supposed to be an escapist fantasy.
Bizarre collab, but I like Ronaldo, legend on and off the pitch. My favourite story was during Euro 2020 when he was doing a press conference and there were two Coca-cola bottles placed in front of him. Being a fan of fitness and not liking sugary drinks being promoted along sport he hid these away and pulled out a bottle of water instead, proudly claiming "Agua!" in Portugese.
That doesn't seem too big on it's own, but it went viral and knocked $4 billion USD off Coca-cola's share price the next day. Absolute legend.
It’s not even Ronaldo voicing him. It's just a new character inspired by him.
I dislike guest characters on all games though, let's just get that clear. But this isn't crazier than say... Ghostface, Conan or Freddy.
I wonder if the soccer ball will have the same physics as Mai's assets.
It's 100% the Saudi connection.
Last big Saudi PPV boxing match was covered in City of the Wolves branding and believe the next PPV is literally called "Fatal Fury". They often trot Ronaldo out at these events too and have him sit prominently in the front row next to MBS or whatever other members of the royal family are there
Fans who's angry or confused needs to understand that SNK needs City of the Wolves to sell well.
Fatal Fury franchise is niche af and doesn't have brand power and recognition like SF, Tekken, or MK. Not to mention the last game in the series, Mark of the Wolves, was released almost 25 years ago. In that time period, Fatal Fury franchise is pretty much dead and forgotten by many people. I doubt there's many young gamers this days who knows Fatal Fury franchise. Heck, i doubt kids or people who played Terry in Smash Bros knows what franchise he's coming from.
So if SNK wants City of the Wolves to sell well, they can't rely solely on the small Fatal Fury fanbase. They needs to do something drastic to make people outside Fatal Fury community aware of the new game and also attract them to buy / play the game. Ronaldo, Terry and Mai as guest character in SF 6, and Ken and Chun Li as guest character in this game is a necessary.
If City of the Wolves failed to sell well then don't expect Fatal Fury will receive another game.
Meh, I'll just enjoy beating him up
As I mentioned in another article about him, I’m not mad it. If it helps SNK then I’m here for it. Would prefer Duck King over him though.
Siuuuuuuuuuuu-duken
@shonenjump86 Duck king has already been datamined though. So you will get him too most likely.
@Nem huh, didn’t know that. That would be great if he is eventually in the game.
@shonenjump86 just Google "fatal fury city of the wolves datamine" and you can see all that were leaked.
His finishing move will be boring his opponent with stories about him being better than Messi 🤣
