Square Enix has announced a duo of milestones for its ever-popular Final Fantasy franchise.
The series as a whole has now reached an impressive 200 million sales worldwide.
Meanwhile, the pixel remasters — which bring back games 1 to 6 on modern platforms — has now reached 5 million copies sold.
The announcement comes via social media:
"Wherever you joined us on our adventures, thank you," reads the post.
Final Fantasy has been one of Japan's biggest gaming franchises for a long time, and has been part of the furniture on PlayStation since the arrival of the massively successful Final Fantasy VII on PS1.
So popular is that particular entry that it's had various spin-offs of its own, culminating in a huge remake project with Final Fantasy VII Remake followed by Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. A third part of the project is still to come.
Also no doubt contributing a healthy portion of that 200 million is Final Fantasy XIV, the beloved online MMO that has only grown more popular over time.
The pixel remaster series came to PlayStation in 2023 after first launching on Steam and mobile platforms.

The Final Fantasy franchise has failed to meet Square Enix's expectations.
My favourite franchise ever! Rebirth is insanely good and on pro it’s truly stunning. It only took me 9 months to platinum it 😝
@AlexPorto When adjusted for inflation 200M is now 100M tops.
@Mikey856 Respect
grew up and loved the ff series since the ps1 era. unfortunately, the franchise is not what it once was and has been in a steady decline with regards to the new numbered entries. final fantasy xvi only contributed to 3.5m of those 200m sales which says a lot about where we are today.
@heavyartillery56 they are talking about 200m copies sold, not generated revenue.
My fav franchise. Absolutely loved Rebirth this past year
5 million sales for the pixel remasters, and they still haven't fixed that jittery movement.
@Porco I thought it was a joke
I can bet they still not happy
Best Franchise ever! Looking forward to Final Fantasy VII part 3!
So GTA V sold more than the whole FF series. No wonder it didnt meet SE's expectations.
Congrats!! Final Fantasy is a Day 1 purchase no matter the game. I’ve platinum’ed FFI & FFII from the pixel remasters so far. It’s a ton of fun to see how this franchise evolved over the years especially since I joined the bandwagon very late
I really hope it doesn’t take ages for FF17 to get developed/launched. I don’t need a mainline game yearly but every three years would be great. At least I know FF7 Part 3 will come out eventually… and I’ve held out on playing FFIX because of the remake rumors far too long
The greatest of all franchises.
Also I would add, if you haven't. Give FF1 a go. It's held up brilliantly if you want a simple time waster after work, and getting the plat is doable with no missable trophies.
@Nalim Yes, GTA 5 has sold more than 99.99999 % of the games and franchises out there.
Is it more or less impressive that FF16 has only sold 3.5 million copies?
@naruball True, but still crazy when you think about it. Especially when the FF series is almost running for 40 years and got 16 main entries.
Congrats to SE. I hope 5 million copies satisfy their target sales.
3.5 million in a year and a half for an AAA game would've been good in the 360/PS3 era. That's actually below average nowadays.
Square wanted a phenomenon like what happened to God of War.
I've become a big fan of the Final Fantasy series since I started playing FF8 back in '99. Still play them to this day. Congrats, Squenix, on the milestone!!
I hope Clair Obscure: Expedition 33 is a smash hit and shows SE that people still want that kind of gameplay. I understand that I'm in the minority - especially on this site - but for me, the combat in Rebirth was so bad as to be completely unplayable just from the demo - I couldn't even finish it, and I absolutely refuse to buy it. Nothing about it works. Even in Remake, I avoided battles as much as I could because I just couldn't stand the combat system. I'd hoped that they had learned a thing or two about action combat with Final Fantasy XVI which was decent in its own right, but nowhere near the peak years of the franchise. A return to the series' roots would be incredible.
@Shad361 They didn't make a game of that quality sadly imo. I don't think a lot of people understand just how difficult it is to do what God of War 2018 did: take a old franchise (that people were tired of) and change the game play, setting, tone and yet, it feels like it shares the DNA of the series in a way that makes it welcoming to new audiences and veterans alike.
We saw it not work for DA Veilguard and it definitely was a disappointment for FFXVI. The only other game that saw a massive overhaul and be successful like that was BOTW in recent memory because it still felt like Zelda.
@Porco Pretty sure he's being sarcastic unless...
@Nalim I don't think it's crazy to be honest.
