Chrono Trigger is often cited as one of the greatest JRPGs ever made, and we can't help but agree with this assessment. It somehow manages to feel surprisingly modern even all these years later. We aren't alone; as part of its 30th anniversary celebrations, Square Enix has revealed that the hugely influential game has moved more than five million units across the globe.
Spotted by My Nintendo News, Square Enix itself revealed the number right at the bottom of a celebratory blog post, and that's in Japanese. It's an interesting reminder of how things have changed in that time. We'll admit that our first reaction to that figure was surprise. Considering how much digital ink we've seen spilt praising the game in our lifetime, contributing not a little ourselves, the number seems quite quaint.
The last firm figures reported were back in 2018, and excluding PC sales, the game was sitting at around 3.5 million copies then. Compare that with, say, a modern AAA game and the discussion around whether or not two million players in two days means something was a failure. Obviously, budgets and expectations are vastly different; perhaps we should just turn back the clock and return to the glorious age of 16-bit pixel art games. You won't hear any complaints from us.
What do you think of Chrono Trigger's impressive sales milestone, achieved some 30 years after launch? Let us know in the comments section below.

Such an amazing game, deserving of ever single sale. Played through it again not to long ago, had a blast. The scope and storytelling were above and beyond anything it's peers delivered at the time IMO. 🏆
Now can we get a remaster or a HD-2D remake.
An all-time classic game. Would buy an HD-2D version of this in a heartbeat. But that makes too much sense so 0% chance SE makes it a reality.
This along with ff3/6, and breath of fire 1/2 is my snes childhood.
Would absolutely love a remake but only if they make it look like the ff7 remake. If they only remaster it please keep it sprites with 3d backgrounds.
Is that every platform combined ever? Like Snes/PS1/DS physical and Wii, PS3 and PC digital? That's a travesty if so. And honestly might change my understanding of the medium and those who enjoy it...
Just re-read PC excluded. But even still. Damn.
5 million may seem small by todays standards but it was made by a team of less than 100 devs (which was large for the time) and when getting 100,000 sales was often seen as a success. Few games hit 1 million back then, especially JRPGs which were niche at the time.
@themightyant that's every platform it released on minus PC over basically 20 years is how i read it? I hope I'm wrong
Don't think I fully appreciated this game as I only played it after Cross which I really really liked but it's nice that it's getting it's moment.
Also mood:
" If the world is to be destroyed so be it! "
@Nyne11Tyme yes I agree. But rereleases rarely sell all that well compared to initial sales; and those were different times, JRPGs were niche at the time. JRPGS usually released months or years later overseas, to tiny sales, hence it never even released on SNES or PlayStation in Europe, first time was Nintendo DS version 14 years later.
CT was my favourite game, tied with FF6 for a long while, I had to import it and get my SNES chipped to play it. Basically cost me £150+ in 1995… worth every penny.
This was the game that truly got me in to gaming. It was just about when I was old enough to, not only get a firm grasp on a battle system, but (and much more importantly) got me in to a story. Got me caring about characters. Immersed me in a world that had stakes. Got me…fully invested in an adventure. I, legitimately, don’t care how many units it moved. It moved me. Even at an age when I couldn’t truly appreciate it, it has stuck with me, and shaped the kind of games I wanted to play moving forward. This game is an ALL TIME great.
I personally don't need a remake / remaster. But i would be happy if SE port the PS1 version for PS4/5.
Literally just put it on modern consoles as is, it still holds up magnificently well.
I'm sure they'll release a watch and a Crono bored ape JPEG to celebrate, but I hope they release a straight port with the original graphics to current consoles.
