Metro developer 4A Games has shared a new update on the next mainline franchise in its FPS series as it celebrates 15 years since the release of the original, Metro 2033. Expanding on what it said in 2022, the Ukrainian studio has changed the story of the next game as a result of the Russian invasion of its country.
In a statement posted to its official website, the team is drawing from its experiences in Ukraine over the past few years to create a darker story. "As art became life for many of our developers in Ukraine, we drew from that lived experience to create an even darker story, those themes already present in Metro becoming ever-more apparent and important."
Working alongside novelist Dmitry Glukhovsky, the "hard-hitting, political, anti-war" themes of the series will continue. "Dmitry has always spoken out against the war in Ukraine from the start — a courageous decision for any russian, that has seen him sentenced to jail (in absentia) — and we are proud to have him as a friend and co-creator as we tell this next, and never more relevant chapter of Metro together."
4A Games has both the next Metro instalment and a new IP in production, and it's working through "missile strikes, air-raid sirens, and terror still raining down on Ukraine" to complete them. The studio adds that it's "as safe as possible" but wishes to manage expectations around the full reveal of the next Metro game.
The team says "it will be ready when it is ready, and we can’t wait for you to see it". This suggests the announcement of the game isn't particularly close. Recently, a breakaway studio from 4A Games announced a new title called La Quimera under the development house called Reburn.
Throughout 2025, the developer will be sharing "events, deals and celebratory content" on its social media channels to mark 15 years of the franchise. While the original Metro 2033 started out life as an Xbox 360, PC exclusive, it came to PS4 later on via the remastered Metro Redux collection, along with Metro: Last Light.

Wow, this one is going to hit hard.
I'll show my support and be there day one.
I really enjoyed Exodus and with this reminder I'm going to put the others on my wishlist now.
EDIT: £6.24 for 2033 Redux and Last Light Redux. Bargain!
Im surprised Push Square kept the comments open considering the subject matter 😐

I just completed the Trilogy at the start of year, they are very good with Exodus being a 8/10, look forward to see where they go next.
Metro is a harsh sci-fi horror take on a relatively believable subject matter. It's appropriate that they would explore further themes even more relevant and close to home in the sequel.
Given the premise of Metro, if the story wasn't already as dark as it could go, they were doing it wrong.
Atomic heart is way better
N.i.c.e. metro games are always incredible. Word up son
@mountain_spider @arsmolinarc Satire right? I've only ever heard bad things about that game. I sincerely doubt it can even hold a candle to any Metro game.
And yes Nazis are bad. In Metro you regularly fight against them. In Atomic Heart...you fight robots.
Sure I'll play the next Metro before I do the same with Atomic Heart, unless I get it for free or buy it cheap second-hand.
I’m not sure metro could get any darker, but I guess if you currently live in a country that is fighting for its survival against a crazed neighbour you’re going to find even darker places to draw from.
I'll definitely be there day one for it. The Metro series always delivers and I'm sure this one will be no different.
@arsmolinarc I hopw this is satire. Metro games always have a good anti-war anti Nazi message.
@TruestoryYep for me it's completely the opposite. I've heard positive things and I've heard a couple negative things but they were mostly nitpicking. The game is pretty fun and a cheesy retro 60s/50s alternate WW2 winner. But to each his own.
@TruestoryYep I've not really played any Metro yet to compare—but AH plays really well (I love the ability to soak up everything from cabinets instead of having to loot them all individually—more games should do that) and the art direction is obviously incredible. if you've not heard **any** good things of it, you've not heard much worth hearing about it.
that said, it's far from the bestest thing ever and the story kinda bites.
@MarshMelody I’m interested to know at what point, atomic hearts gets good?
@Artois2 good or bad, Atomic Heart gave me more of a Bioshock vibe than a Metro vibe.
Just me personally but I don't get the Metro comparison.
I didn't know the writer of Metro 2033 had to flee Russia. Massive respect to him for sticking to his morals even when they can literally get you killed
@arsmolinarc Isn't Atomic Heart the one developed by Russian Devs?
@arsmolinarc
I've waiting to play AH for a while, hope PS Plus gets it in the upcoming months.
Found Exodus borderline unplayable on PS5 due to the controls.
Really looking forward to a new Metro, looking even more forward to us not being the crazed neighbor anymore. I thought Metro was already dark especially the novels so I'm curious to see where they'll go next with the story. I never did finish Atomic Heart.
Love the Metro games so much. Exodus was beautiful in more ways than one and I do think that the combination of a writer-in-exile and Ukrainian devs was important for the story to not be neutered. Well up for another one.
This chat will definitely totally not get political at all.
Yes please.
I hope its more like Exodus in structure. The semi-open world fit Metro much better than the more COD Goes Stalker feel of the 2 former games, imo.
I really do like this series, it's full of atmosphere. A mostly linear and focused narrative shooter with a bit of survival horror thrown in, I think it should be played on higher difficulties. The first two are still the best in my opinion. Exodus was an interesting concept but felt far less claustrophobic owing to the semi open world setting. I have the VR game Awakening but want to finish Arkham Shadow first.
@Perturbator we'll agree to disagree 😂
@mountain_spider Atomic Heart way better? Lmao
Atomic Heart is good, but extremely mediocre in many parts. Imagine thinking is any better than Metro lol

@StandardMario You joined 19 minutes ago and are already competing for the dumbest, most inappropriate comment. Congratulations.
@Shrek_Realista you could say the exact same thing about Metro. It’s just another shooter. Does it have a good story yes but the atmosphere feels too basic. Atomic heart was weird so I enjoyed it. Imagine thinking people aren’t allowed to have a preference. Lol
@mountain_spider The main thing i look for in games is atmosphere and I love the Metro games, gotta say I find this comment baffling.
I would like them to bring the Dark ones back
Exodus in my mind was missing the supernatural elements
@ThomasHL
He has always been vocally opposed to Putin and good for him. More Russians need to stand up to that knob end
I didn't play Metro because I thought I would be supporting a Russian developer. Was I wrong?
I play all metros and read all books. Big fan here. This has potencial like the others games. Hope will be good. And prey for then. Uk dont deserve what is hap...
I finished Metro 2033 and Last Light and i enjoyed both of them. But i'm not yet played Exodus.
I thought Exodus was the end?
@JVCIOM70
Metros developers are Ukranian and have had to put up with all kinds of BS with the Russian government, for example during the Crimean annexation in 2014 they famously had to smuggle Xbox One and PS4 dev kits into the country. Please support these devs they deserve it.
@mountain_spider Atomic Heart was garbage
