System Shock 2: 25th Anniversary Remaster PS5 PlayStation

System Shock 2 is a hugely influential game, rounding off many of the original's rougher edges, implementing ideas and systems that would be further honed and made more recognisable in spiritual successor BioShock. Nightdive Studios already has a remaster in the works, but that doesn't mean we won't see a full-blown remake someday.

Speaking to VGC at GDC, Nightdive's exasperated-sounding director of business development, Larry Kupperman, had the following to say on the subject: "I’ve been asked twice earlier today why we didn’t do a remake, and I said, ‘are you somehow under the impression that because we do a remaster that we won’t be able to do a remake in the future?’ That might be something that I can either confirm or deny. But there’s going to be content coming out."

Far from a concrete announcement, but it does sound like there might be something there. In terms of actually new content, Kupperman also briefly commented on the long-awaited third entry in the series, which Nightdive Studios does not hold the rights to: "The situation around System Shock 3 is very complicated."

In what feels like another lifetime, we got an update back in 2022 that the threequel is now in the hands of Tencent. Nothing has been heard of it since, and the developer on the project at the time, Otherside Entertainment, has since moved on to making its own immersive sim, Thick As Thieves.

Would you be up for a complete System Shock 2 remake? Are you looking forward to the games impeding remaster? Lament the sad fate that seemingly awaits all immersive sims (development hell) in the comments section below.
