Rise of the Ronin – one of 2024’s tentpole PS5 exclusives – is making its way to PC on 11th March, and a media embargo has lifted allowing press to discuss their experience.
While the core campaign is identical to what’s already available on Sony’s system, the performance is attracting a lot of criticism. To summarise the gripes from a variety of outlets, Koei Tecmo has failed to effectively optimise this port, and it demands a disproportionately powerful rig to deliver an acceptable experience.
VICE writes: “It took a while before I could finally get to a place where my PC would actually let me experience Rise of the Ronin as it should. I met the recommended specs, but there were plenty of visits to the graphics menu to tweak things.
“If I set VSYNC to a certain parameter, my game would run at half speed. Sometimes, it looked like a watercolour painting, rather than an accurate depiction of the Bakumatsu era. And more often than not, I saw enough framerate spikes that would drive a lesser man insane. Pair this with some textures not loading in, and I was in for a slightly visually inconsistent experience.”
WCCFTech concurs, noting that it expects poor to mixed reviews on Steam when the title launches next week, largely due to its performance.
Rise of the Ronin wasn’t exactly praised for its presentation when it launched on the PS5, but it has slowly been recognised as something of a cult hit on the console, and comes roundly recommended these days.
Perhaps, if you haven’t played this yet, you may be better off sticking with the PS5 version for now. Granted, it’s not the best looking game on the console – but at least it runs reasonably well out of the box.

And it's faff and failure like this that just puts me right off PC gaming in general. Shame.
Initial footage of this game looked so promising. But no one I know who’ve played it had good things to say about it. Maybe it’s just the fact it couldn’t live up to the hype.
Sigh. What is going on with these PC ports? I really want to switch to PC but not if it is worse than the console experience.
Edit: I am expecting that the benchmark specs of a game ported to PC will run well. If it doesn’t that is a bad port and means a worse console experience. Given the cost of a good rig, for me that is inexcusable. I have been gaming on PC for decades but am saving to switch off of xbox and PlayStation to go back to being a PC/Nintendo gamer.
A real shame. Hope they can work some magic in short order with what sounds like a polished AC around the corner. This doesn’t deserve to be overshadowed because of a bad port.

@Ryu_Niiyama Developers have to accommodate for an unlimited number of configurations and that sometimes causes problems.
This does not surprise me. The graphics on the PS5 currently are shocking. They still look like an early PS4 era game. So for the PC to also struggle shows that their game engine is not designed for open world.
@Hapless Monster Hunter sells because it's a beloved game series that has proven itself time and again. As a new IP, Rise of the Ronin doesn't have that benefit. In general, if PC game has major technical difficulties, it will reflect in sales.
Koei Tecmo has historically struggled with PC ports. One of the numerous reasons I avoid that platform altogether.
@AhmadSumadi I played it and really enjoyed it, but I don’t know you so I guess your statement stands. The game is just stuffed with interesting historical info about one of the most fascinating periods of Japanese history. If that’s not your thing, I can see it being a bit of a slog at times, but I was constantly entertained.
@Hapless I'm pretty sure Spider-Man 2 sold kind of disappointingly initially because it had some performance issues. The sales did improve later, though.
But yeah, I agree overall. This is not only a PC problem either. Console gamers should also vote with their wallets if a game releases with major technical issues.
@AhmadSumadi it’s absolutely pants that’s why. Terrible graphics and some really shoddy gameplay.
It doesn’t really seem like any of the PC ports of PS5 games are ever optimised well and always seem to be terrible ports.
Sony should probably just keep them as PS exclusives instead of just making them console exclusives as I have never heard good things about any of the games that have been ported over recently Spider man 2 wasn’t a very well received PC port either
Say what you want about console, but PC seems like a dumpster fire when it comes to ports 👀
Just seems like one thing after another 😵💫
Imagine spending a whole bunch of money on a PC and than you find out you can’t play a particular new game that you was looking forward to like the new monster hunter game 🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😶🌫️🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑🤑👀
@Dragoon1994 To be fair, this particular game is being ported to PC by Koei Tecmo. Sony’s not publishing this one due to the way the contract works.
What a time we live in. Being sold a PS5 Pro to get closer to PC performance and then PC ports don’t bloody work either.
@Can-You-Believe-Sith Agreed but most PC users just get over it and they don't give a poo because they can do other things than just gaming.
Jeez I do everything on mine because I can't stand looking at touch screen phones, I have a Nokia 2260 flip phone because of it 😅
But it is ridiculous that some games get released the way they do on PC at times.
@get2sammyb
I see, fair enough
@get2sammyb Hi Sammy. I suppose I worded my comment poorly. I have been gaming on PC for a few decades (it is just no longer my primary since I need to upgrade my rig), so yes PC has to work on a range of configurations, however there are benchmark configurations that are supposed to work (at least if it is a good port). If a game has issues on a benchmark (that the devs set mind you) then that is a poor port, full stop and no excuses. That’s what it seems like your article is describing (and many of the other issues with PS5 games going to PC) and if that is the case then I stand by my lament. I am not gonna give a dev a pass for poor optimization (if it is noticeable. As I can’t tell most FPS issues.). Especially given the price of the hobby and the price I am willing to put into a gaming rig. Now if I misunderstood your article then that is something different. I have edited my original post for clarity.
@AhmadSumadi the game is quite alright but in no way exceptional. It feels like how I remember assassin's creed (last I played was the 3rd Enzio game). I'm just surprised that AC shadows is getting accused for a bunch of stuff that this game also does, nothing bad of course, but enough to get peeps outraged. Anyways, Ronin is a inoffensive good but not great game.
Hope they fix the pc version.
I’ll have to see performance metrics for myself.
Maybe I am not a “hardcore” PC gamer, but sometimes I see PC enthusiasts scoff at a game having terrible performance because a game runs at an average 90+ fps but then focus on these periodic lows of 65fps as if the game is unplayable and I wonder what their issue is with the game.
Sure, drastic spikes in framerates are annoying, but I would hardly call that “unplayable” like some people complain about.
I think people need to spend more time playing and less time staring at performance metrics the whole time.
I only use performance metrics to make sure I am running at least 60fps for about 20 minutes of gameplay and then turn it off.
I guess being a console gamer really helped keep my expectations in-check. Is it nice to go above and beyond console? Sure. Do I spend time analyzing my performance metrics for an entire playthrough of a game? No.
I'm thankful for the PS5 version since I really enjoyed this game, but it's crazy how many bad PC ports continue to be released. I thought 2023 was bad but it just seems to get worse.
Hasn't it been customary for decades that console to pc ports have been...well not great. It seemed to always work better when it made for PC and then ported to console. I still remember over 2 decades ago reading a letter in a magazine complaining about the shoddy Resident Evil 2 port and how they needed a disproportionately powerful pc (at the time) to play a PS1 game. How times don't change 😭
@Steel76 while Japanese developers are notorious for not optimizing in general, I think some of this also falls down onto UE5 (and the challenges of optimizing this). Though clearly MH Wilds also shows that it's not specific to the engine, but the effort invested.
It is one the the biggest regrets of a game I brought on PlayStation. The game is too long and bloated with fetch quests and basic mission design. The graphics on PS5 are poor and the only redeeming feature is the combat. This combat in a more open zone/linear world for 20-30 hours would have been more enjoyable. It took me 30 hours to get to the second map.
@Futureshark in general, PC is the best platform to play a lot of games tbh, including MH Wilds.Metaphor ReFantazio was also a far better experience on PC as well.
@Legacy2K Metaphor couldn’t even maintain 60fps on PS5. People are under an illusion thinking a lot of these games are running well on PS5 when they aren’t
It’s their way of coping I guess. PS5 has multiple games that drop to 720p resolution.
@Ryu_Niiyama Well said. A degree of leniency is always admirable but when the devs say "these are the recommended specs" and a user exceeds them and the game still has a boatload of performance issues, that's not a user problem. The devs are at fault in that scenario and leniency is undeserved.
Step 1: Save up for three years
Step 2: Realise the prices of PC hardware has gone up and save for an additional year.
Step 3: Buy (and build) your PC
Step 4: Install drivers and a game
Step 5: Adjust your settings to play your game optimized for your configuration.
Step 6: Go to Pushsquare to inform the world that PC is better than PS.
There are literally millions of PC users yet so few make it past this gauntlet to come on here to express that PC is better than PS. The five year journey of that utterance is what kills me every time.
I have a 4080 and 13th gen CPU.
It will be fine.
@EfYI if it takes three years to save up for a pc you're either bad with finances or they are out of your price point.
Stick with consoles, they're fun for what they are and keep it simple for the non tech savvy.
@Fishnpeas
Good talk.
See you in five years!
@EfYI It will be earlier than that, I normally change out when the new graphics cards release, but will be skipping the 5x series, they're the equivalent of a ps4 pro.
@Fishnpeas
So, you'll just exchange a few key hardware items or the whole rig?
For me, I am simply happy to have the PS5. Normally, I'd be all over the PS5 Pro, but the thought of having a great, no hassle launch PS5 well into the future just feels right for me. I made the mistake of not getting an LG C3/4 and so I just can't justify the upgrade until I want a new TV.
The only thing I would really like that I don't have are PC mods because of the mutability of your game experience. Sony are just too conservative, unfortunately.
@KoopaTheGamer Somehow games release in a decent state mostly though.
@Fishnpeas What is the price of decent videocard, then a processor, ram, power supply, cooling, keyboard and mouse case.
A PC is expensive all games are rentals on Steam its more of a effort to do Things like drivers and stuff so its more of hassle in general.
@Flaming_Kaiser It's true that PC is a very expensive initial purchase, but as long as you get a decent build, it's enough to upgrade parts of it in the future. For example, you can get a new GPU that is as powerful as PS5 Pro but around half the price.
As for games being "rentals"... Well, so are all digital games on Playstation store. Technically even physical PS5 games only give you a license to play the game, not actual ownership of it. Yes, you will have the disc, but quite often the game requires additional downloads or online authentication to work anyway. There are also PC marketplaces that sell DRM free games (like GOG).
Seems to be reviewing okay on PC if you go by Metacritic, only 8 reviews but currently at 82 and the lowest being 70. Might try it at some point as it passed me by on PS.
@Flaming_Kaiser All games are rentals?
Wut?
I'm 3 hours in, have it set to 4K resolution, 1440p internal resolution, Ultra settings, 60fps.
Not a single dropped frame so far, runs perfect.
@Fishnpeas On PC they are.
@Flaming_Kaiser ylYeah, that's not any different to console digital releases...
@Fishnpeas Atleast i can get my physical copies on console.
