Saros, Housemarque's Upcoming PS5 Exclusive, Only Possible Thanks to Sony Acquisition 1

The next game from Housemarque is Saros, and it's set to be the biggest game from the Finnish studio yet.

In a recent interview with Helsingin Sanomat (paywalled), the developer's CEO Ilari Kuittinen talks about the upcoming project, commenting that it's only possible because of Sony's acquisition of the company.

Kuittinen says that, while the buyout has had some impact on how the business operates, the main difference is a significant increase in financial resources, allowing Housemarque to make Saros with a much larger budget than its previous titles.

He adds that the game's budget is around the same as that of Alan Wake 2, which has been estimated to be about €70 million.

It's not known what the budget was for the team's previous game, Returnal, though the implication is that it was a fair amount lower. Sony didn't strike a deal to buy the studio until after Returnal's launch, though as a PS Studios release, it would have of course received financial backing from the platform holder.

At any rate, it seems Saros will be Housemarque's biggest project to date.

Though not a sequel, the game follows up on Returnal in many ways; it's a sci-fi third person shooter with roguelike elements, but will feature more permanent upgrades and ways to become incrementally stronger, making it more of a roguelite. This should mean it's not quite as stern a challenge as its predecessor.

The game is launching for PS5 (with PS5 Pro enhancements) in 2026, with more information due later this year. Are you excited for Saros? Get ready for bullet hell in the comments section below.
