The next game from Housemarque is Saros, and it's set to be the biggest game from the Finnish studio yet.
In a recent interview with Helsingin Sanomat (paywalled), the developer's CEO Ilari Kuittinen talks about the upcoming project, commenting that it's only possible because of Sony's acquisition of the company.
Kuittinen says that, while the buyout has had some impact on how the business operates, the main difference is a significant increase in financial resources, allowing Housemarque to make Saros with a much larger budget than its previous titles.
He adds that the game's budget is around the same as that of Alan Wake 2, which has been estimated to be about €70 million.
It's not known what the budget was for the team's previous game, Returnal, though the implication is that it was a fair amount lower. Sony didn't strike a deal to buy the studio until after Returnal's launch, though as a PS Studios release, it would have of course received financial backing from the platform holder.
At any rate, it seems Saros will be Housemarque's biggest project to date.
Though not a sequel, the game follows up on Returnal in many ways; it's a sci-fi third person shooter with roguelike elements, but will feature more permanent upgrades and ways to become incrementally stronger, making it more of a roguelite. This should mean it's not quite as stern a challenge as its predecessor.
The game is launching for PS5 (with PS5 Pro enhancements) in 2026, with more information due later this year. Are you excited for Saros? Get ready for bullet hell in the comments section below.

It's not like this is a something surprising to say. You are hearing this from multiple studios after acquisitions...
Obviously need to see more of the game, but I won't lie this has piqued my interest a lot!
I am so into this release.
I won't lie - I never managed to finish Returnal, even with 90 plus hours put in. But I understand they will be designing this game so that more people can finish this one, as the article confirms, as they saw the metrics on Returnal and realised it was too tough for many. As long as it still offers sufficient challenge for those that are not as old as me, that brings me hope!
This is a developer I trust to get it right.
I love me some roguelites, and Housemarque rarely misses in my eyes, PLUS Returnal was an absolute banger of a game. My interest in this is higher than almost everything else PS Studios are developing.
@Titntin Returnal was great, but the RNG elements for some of the trophies and stuff made it an absolute slog at times. I'm so proud of that Platinum, but MAN was it harder than it needed to be at times.
I wish I was good enough to beat Returnal. It was so much fun, hopefully this one strikes a better balance for players like me!
N.i.c.e more Playstation exclusive is welcome.bluepoint what you cooking 🍳 word up son
Alan wake 2 had a €50m Development Cost, €20m spent on advertising.
Returnal probably cost less than 20m, which I imagine will be a shock for some people who think all modern games cost $100m+
@MFTWrecks Yeah I agree. As much as I loved the game, getting the Platinum was such ball ache. I usually give up Platinum trophies when they are like that, but Returnal was so damn good to play, I couldn't stop myself.
Can't wait for this, could even be a rare day one purchase for me.
I wish Housemarque still makes arcade side scroll / top down twin stick shooters like Resogun, Dead Nation, Alienation, Matterfall, or Nex Machina (which i owned all of them).
But sadly, according to Housemarque those games either didn't sold well or barely recoup the budget despite those games got positive reviews.

So i understand why Housemarque decided to stop making small-mid budget arcadey games and fully focus on AAA games. Returnal did well for them and i pray Saros will do the same if not better. I just hope i don't get to see the day where i read the headline that Housemarque got closed down...
I need to get back to Returnal soon as I'd love to finish off the last few trophies but the random aspect to it was quite offputting last time I tried.
The game itself was brilliant though so I'm definitely day one for this new game
Looking forward to this alot. I just hope there is no more RNG collectibles. That was a big issue for Returnal, on what is otherwise a perfect game and a proud platinum I have.
I have high hopes for this one. Housemarque don’t miss.
@ChrisDeku I really like how efficiently AW2 is made.
The Game doesn't have that many locations or characters and it makes you revisit some of them a bunch but it does it in such way that it feels like a big game even though it's not really all that massive.
As for Housemarque - loved Returnal, will gladly play Returnal But Bigger
Man, I crave for a game like Alan wake 2 again.
I can't wait. Unlike me when I play their games, Housemarque don't miss.
He also forgot to mention… That with the acquisition, Housemarque has also painted a target on it back. With everything that’s going on in the world. Studios shouldn’t be publicly announcing how they was able to increase development cost… That the problem with game development now. The acquisition should have been a way to create the same game at the same budget before being acquired.
Love the studio and their games. I just hope games stop using real peoplea faces in games
I’m replaying Returnal and man oh man am I excited for their next game.
@Cry_Zero I mean, it worked really well in KCD2.
@Oram77 i didnt play kcd2. I didnt mean to imply that theyre bad at it, it just pulls me outta the experience
@PuppetMaster I still regularly play Nex Machina! Returnal was such a natural evolution of their style, I can’t wait to see the next step with Saros.
@Cry_Zero This is the first time i see someone complaint about devs using real people faces in their games. I don't know what's your problem but the practice has been existed for decades and they will not stop using real people faces.
Capcom for example, they mocap a lot of real people faces for their games like RE, DMC, MH, or Onimusha and a lot of people loves it.
@Jimmer-jammer Nex Machina is awesome and it's a shame that it doesn't sold well.
And yeah i know Returnal is the evolution of their arcadey twin stick shooters. But i think it's sad that these days we got less and less devs making simple arcadey twin stick shooters. It feels like the genre gonna extinct 😔
@PuppetMaster Have you seen Kill Knight? I haven't played it yet but it looks like what you're looking for
I THOROUGHLY enjoyed Returnal and I'm really excited for this game based on that alone. I'm not usually one to buy an 'unknown quantity' on Day 1 of release but Returnal was so impressive I have enough faith in this studio that they'll do this title right and this **might** just be a day 1 buy for me.
One of my most anticipated games, up there with Yotei, Prime 4 and Fable. Trailer instantly made me re-install Returnal and I’ve fallen in love with the macabre underworld of Atropos once again. Cannot wait to see gameplay, Housemarque is on another level.
While this whole generation was beyond pathetic and awful regarding exclusive games, the next years gonna be so insane. Finally.
@PuppetMaster maybe you should get outta your bubble then buddy. Its just distracting seeing hollywood guy A as a playable character. I prefer artists creating people/faces themselves
I’m sure this will be a great game as well, with the same studio and a bigger budget. I just hope it won’t be too easy, Returnal found just the right balance between challenging and doable.
My body is ready. Returnal is game of the gen for me so far. Hopefully this surpasses it!
@Voltan Yeah the game is on my wishlist and it looks fun.
@Cry_Zero You're the one who needs to get out from your bubble buddy. Not every big games used Hollywood actors face. Leon RE 2 remake face for example was mocap from a Romanian model name Eduard Badaluta and he's not a Hollywood actor. Or the protag face from the new Onimusha is from a legendary Japanese actor who already passed away.
And you think artist didn't inspired by real people when they created a character? You need to learn more buddy.
It'll be great to have a game with the budget of Alan Wake 2 that actually plays (AW2 was a slog mechanically and ran terribly) well while having an interesting story being well told.
Never played returnal the game looks to hard 😂 I like my games easy 👍🏻 I’m more into the dark pictures games these days. Normal games hardly get a look in anymore 🤷🏻♂️.
@PuppetMaster my guy are you dumb? What bubble? You are the one who talked about other people.
And being inspired by people is different than just using someones face. You should learn to read properly before you reply to anything.
They should just make the games as difficult as they like and provide accessibility settings to allow people who hate a challenge to plow through the game their own way. Returnal couldn't be dominated immediately by design, but it was really not that difficult...and the challenge it did present was part of the appeal of the game.
Anyway, regardless... I'm excited to see how this turns out.
