Final Fantasy VII Rebirth PS5 PlayStation

Naoki Yoshida, affectionately known to his legions of fans as Yoshi-P, no longer sits on Square Enix's board of directors. After making changes to its management structure, Yoshida has seemingly been demoted to executive officer; as the creative director has often chafed at being tied up with corporate busywork, it remains to be seen whether this was by choice.

Automaton caught this one, after reading through the relevant paperwork (thanks, GamesRadar+). Following the success of mega-popular MMO, Final Fantasy XIV, Yoshida was offered a seat at the big table, but apparently he didn't like it much. In 2023 he told Dutch outlet NRC that "I don't want to be on the board, it's much more fun to just make games". It seems Yoshida even tried to resign from the position around then, but was either persuaded or prevented from doing so.

We'll just have to wait and see, but either way, it does seem like Yoshida got his wish. At the end of the day, we'd rather the creative follow his heart and put his whole heart into his true passion, as well as instruct the next generation of Final Fantasy developers.

What do you think of Square Enix's latest round of Musical Chairs? It's all conjecture at this point, but do you think Yoshi-P might be relieved to be relieved of his extracurricular corporate duties? Let us know in the comments section below.
