Blue Prince is one of those puzzle games best played with little knowledge going in, as much of its joy is in uncovering its surprisingly deep depths. At surface level, this is a sort-of roguelike adventure in which you map out the layout of a mysterious mansion across a 45-square grid, with your ultimate goal being to find the hidden 46th room. We have to stress, though, that there's more to the game than this, even though at times it can feel like there isn't.
Behind each door you must place one of three rooms, randomly chosen from your pool of blueprints. Each room, no matter how empty it may appear, contains something that will help you, whether a handy item or just some information. There's a degree of strategy in how you build out the mansion, and once you spend a few days (runs) working it out, it's possible to fill every space. But it isn't about filling up the grid with maze-like rooms — it's more about figuring out the right rooms.
Eventually, you'll learn that the game has a lot more going on than just this ever-changing house, and it's discovering these revelations that Blue Prince is at its most satisfying. Even after the credits roll, there's still plenty left unanswered, encouraging you to keep digging to unearth the game's deepest secrets. If you enjoy layered puzzle boxes like The Witness, Myst, and Fez, this comes highly recommended.
However, while there's tons to discover, you'll need patience and determination to see it all. Due to the game's random elements, some days feel completely wasted. Even when you know precisely what you need to move forward, you're entirely at the mercy of the game's randomised room choices and item distribution. While you'll come across some ways of making certain rooms more consistent, you'll find yourself making no meaningful progress at times, which can be demoralising, especially when your last attempt came tantalisingly close to a breakthrough.
There's something to be taken from almost every run, though, whether that's knowledge, some sort of permanent progress, or just discovering a room you hadn't seen before. So dense with puzzles, secrets, and lore is Blue Prince that it rarely leaves you empty-handed, even if it can feel that way sometimes. Again, if you have the drive to see the game through on its terms, you'll be handsomely rewarded, but the journey getting to that point may be too inconsistent for some.

Hey! Thanks for reading as always Happy to answer any questions, but obviously won't be spoiling anything. Just copy me in
Certainly the lowest scoring review I’ve read of it.
Elsewhere seems to universally praise it much more. So I’d recommend reading several reviews.
Edit - in no way am I saying this review is wrong, just I’d recommend reading more than just this one.
Saw the trailer and said nope, this game would drive me insane lol
I hate games like this that are designed for me to do the same thing again and again in the hopes it will let me progress.
I definitely wanna try this. 👌
@PsBoxSwitchOwner 7/10 is still "Good", so it's fine. It would be extremely unlikely for everyone to absolutely love any one game.
Great review, Stephen. I'm certainly intrigued by this one. Can understand where you're coming from with your frustrations, though.
Eager to give this one a go myself and see if I agree.
Definitely feels weird seeing a review this low for a potential GoTY candidate. Kind of undermines the developers 7+ years of effort to create this.
@KoopaTheGamer oh yeah fully agree, just wanted people to know that this review is the lowest (by a decent margin) so it’s worth also reading elsewhere.
This is a perfect example of why I never take notice of reviews here at push. Everything else here is great, but they are so consistently off the mark compared with their peers and my own views, that they clearly have a problem. This is the highest rated game released this year on aggregate and this review is the low outrider and clearly way off the mark.
The reviews from others range from good to exceptional , so Id suggest reading elsewhere if you want a more balanced opinion that's likely to resonate with most people's experiences.
For all those questioning this review score, please understand that all reviews are subjective. They’re not a science, they’re the personal experience of the reviewer. Not everybody enjoys the same thing and everybody experiences different frustrations.
I’ve read reviews from people who absolutely love the puzzle genre and enjoy rogue-likes - they’ve scored the game a perfect 10. If you don’t enjoy these things or the genre is one that you typically don’t gravitate towards it makes absolute sense that this game would review lower. 7/10 is still a great score, particularly given the frustrations that the reviewer experienced.
I’m looking forward to trying this on gamepass - I generally find puzzle games frustrating but I’m interested to check it out and see if I end up enjoying it. I value this review more than the perfect 10s as I feel my gaming preferences are better represented by it.
@Titntin Ultimately we all like different things. This is probably a 9 or a 10 for me based on the little i've read and seen (trying to go in pretty blind), but I respect that it may not be everybody's cup of tea either.
I adored Return of the Obra Dinn for example but I can also understand some players not liking it. Thoughtful puzzle games aren't for everyone.
I don't think it matters that they differ from their peers, that is absolutely fine, but on a personal level if you find their reviews don't match yours then it's best to look for other reviewers that do match your tastes. This has always been the best approach to reviews, find a reviewer who likes what you like. Good luck. And enjoy Blue Prince.
PC version has a MetaCritic of 92 and on OpenCritic 90, so i'll try it myself since its included in Plus Extra.
Downloading right now, gonna play it tonight. Don't know if Im patient enough for this kind of game but ist something original.
I think it's definitely one that requires a lot from you. But if you persevere, it rewards you ten-fold. I've read glowing reviews where the critic is still thinking about it when they're not playing it. It sounds like a transformative and memorable experience if you allow it to be.
Perhaps this reviewer didn't fully see or appreciate everything it had to offer, and that's okay. I can't wait to try it though. But I know that I need patience and fortitude to get the most out of it.
Definitely a game I'm glad I can try at no extra cost thanks to PS+. Not sure if it'll be for me but definitely want to try it out since it's getting such high praise elsewhere.
@themightyant Which is exactly what I said in my post, look at other reviews for a balanced view. That seemed a fairly balanced way to suggest people might wish to seek other opinions.
It's my personal opinion that the reviews on push are rarely up to standard, but that doesn't stop me still paying my subs for this site, as I value their news and other articles, I just dismay at the majority of their reviews. If I want a more considered review from one of these sites I read PJs reviews on pure, which I usually resonate with and are rarely an outlier when compared with general consensus. I have several other reviewers who's opinions I value, so I've no need to look anywhere.
That's my personal opinion and I'm just as allowed to express it as someone is to post a review that seems so out of step with their peers, unless we are stifling dissent on the site, by suggesting I can't suggest people look at other reviews?
Either way, I generally like thoughtful games and the some of the opinions I've read about how unforgettable and unique this game is give me hope that I'll enjoy it too.
@Titntin Yup, they are the lowest outlier almost every time. I appreciate a good critical appraisal of a game, but it's always funny to me to see high scores everywhere and then come here with expectations that it'll be 2-3 points lower. A review is a personal opinion but its seems like pattern nearly across the board here.
I got interested, gonna donwload it today.
This isn't a criticism as such, because opinions are opinions, but I swear everytime I look at PushSquare reviews they always review a point or two under the average.Mainly 9s everywhere for this.
79 metacritic rating on PS5, so i don't see the issue with this site's score.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Not to be that guy but technically on the Xbox metacritic there is a 65 rating, so this is now the second lowest review.
Many more glowing reviews though, so definitely a big congrats to the devs.
@Quintumply thanks for the review Stephen. Seriously, this what keeps me coming back to the site.
As someone who adored Lorelei and the Laser Eyes this sounds right up my alley! Id not even heard about this, downloading now
Have it installed on GamePass but not sure when I'll get around to it as there's FF7 Remake I need to finish and then games like South of Midnight, Avowed, Indiana Jones...I could go on, it's been a great year for video games again.
@UltimateOtaku91 A sample of 5 reviews vs 32 PC (92) not really a fair comparison. A sample of 5 on the Xbox has it at 88 also.
Now, I don't see a problem with a 7/10, I just think it's fair to point this out. 1 of the ps5 reviews is this review also.
@trev666 best avoid roguelikes/roguelites 😂 IV played too many doing a few runs then eventually getting bored 😭
@Neither_scene exactly different strokes for different folks
@Titntin "The reviews from others range from good to exceptional..."
I mean, it literally says "good" right next to the score. Sooo...
@Migoshuro lol. Good point, well made! 😀
Clearly I was suggesting the range of scores tended to be higher, but I used loose language 👍
Would probably enjoy the game if it wasn't for the built in and seemingly unnecessary frustrations, which were mentioned in other reviews as well. Won't be spending my money on this one.
@Titntin "This is a perfect example of why I never take notice of reviews here at push."
You on Atomfall: "Great review thanks."
You on Split Fiction: "What a great review - thanks Stephen!"
You on Citizen Sleeper 2: "Thanks for this review, I'm now minded to try this and see if it grabs me."
You on Slitterhead: "Sammy, thanks for the review."

@Herculean Yeesh. That's a little bit of creepy stalking, there
@tselliot I think you're confusing 'stalking' with checking so I don't make baseless claims. For example, if you had done just a bit of that, you would have found that Quintumply often reviews rogue likes (Hinterburg) and puzzle games (Lorelei).
Did 1 day last night to give it a go and the game looks fun, but it screams out that it needs at VR version. It feels entirely built for it already.
@Herculean It doesn't mean I'm not polite or complimentary when I do enjoy a review. I do my best to support this site with more complimentary comments whenever I can, in addition to paying a yearly voluntary subscription.
I'm flattered you were bothered to sift through my previous comments, where you would no doubt have seen I do my best to engage in a positive way in the vast majority of my posts here.
Have a great day.
This game will be dining off the Jason Schreier seal of approval if nothing else. His comments on the game are what’s had it on my radar though but this review confirms some of the worries I have about it.
Some odd comments about the scoring of the review though; it partly shows why numerical score are nonsense but also the mentality that anything not given a 9 or 10 is utter garbage.
@Titntin You know, you are right. I was initially surprised by the somewhat overly generalizing response, because I consider you to be a very positive contributor to the site. I don't know why I was trying to point that out, maybe I shouldn't have made that comment, sorry.
Anyway, thanks for the thoughtful response.
@Titntin Yeah, I got your point, though. In my reception review scores kinda inflated a lot over the last 20 years. So, I'm sometimes kinda relieved seeing a review outlet not going all out and tossing 10/10s left and right.
Personally I think, review scores are a plague and should be whiped from the collective consciousness. But since that is very unlikely (and mankind would probably reinvent them), we all should return to use the whole scale of a rating system and give more attention at how it's brought into perspective. I don't mean you, specifically.
Just my two cents on the whole topic of review scores.
@Herculean It's no problem mate. Though I wasn't in an attack mode or anything and kept the original comment civil, I was clearly annoyed and such a post will likely attract further comments. I will try and excuse myself by remembering I'd been subject to nausea and vertigo for three days and I perhaps shouldn't post while I'm not well!
I genuinely do find the reviews here to be the weakest element of this sites attractions though, but as many have pointed out, they are entitled to their views! Have a good one👍

@Migoshuro Yes mate I totally agree with your viewpoint on reviews, but we are where we are and I think it's unlikely it's likely to change. I'll leave it there as my previous suggestion was clearly not appreciated. Have a good day..
3 or 4 hours into it, i can say it cant be an 8/9 score game, repetitive af....
I've not played it yet, but I do believe it has Rogue-Like mechanics. If so, chances are: The more you play, the more you get out of it. I'm rather excited for it. Oo-er!
@brizzbrett What a bad take. Someone giving their honest review of a game is not undermining a developer's work. It's respecting their work. Actual insanely bad take.
This game is very very good. Something has just clicked for me and opened up many new possibilities. I love those eureka moments.
My number one tip for this game is to focus on drafting rooms you have not seen before. That should be your priority even it it means an end to your current run. New rooms are where all the story and hints are.
Also play with a notebook - you will definitely need it.
@Titntin Thank you! Likewise!
I’m a few runs into this and loving it!
Played a few hours. I think 7 is generous!
Currently on about day 8 and it's definitely a good puzzle game, it's certainly not going to be everyone's style however simply due to the amount of more keeping you have to do outside of each session
This tallies much more closely to my experience so far than the 9/10's others are giving it.
The RNG nature is a bit too random, it should be more weighted so that there's more chance of drafting a room that actually let's you progress rather than the constant dead ends options im faced with that end runs before theyve even started.
Forcing you into a draft once you've clicked on a door was a terrible idea, the worst in the game. If I've got 2 entry points to a square and the first way draws me no viable options to continue, I should be able to cancel work my way around to the other entrance and draft from that side too to see my options, doesnt make anything easier but gives the player more control and strategy in their planning.
this tiny change would massively improve the early frustration with this game and complete reliance on the luck of the draw.
When I get the runs that give me enough keys/gems and enough luck to reach the later ranks they're actually fun and you can feel satisfied that you've had an opportunity to progress even if you dint actually make any progress with anything. They're a complete contrast to drawing nothing but dead ends and not being able to go north when still rank 2/3 which so far is 80% of the runs.
@Bluemoon2008 i agree i am currently on day 10 i think and I am a bit bored of beggining every time, yoo much random luck...
And i love roguelites... Isaac, returnal, sly the spire, balatro, hades, etc etc
I also love puzzle games... I was rather exited for this one, but so far a 6/7 game for me....
I will force myself to continue because the good runs are fun and finding tidbits of infirmation is rewarding, but its not being a full enjoyable experience so far
Saw the word "puzzle" got excited, then saw "roguelike" and "random" and was instantly deflated.
When are devs going to get bored of these things?
Just give us a solid "linearlike" game and slap the randomisation on the side for people who want to replay stuff?
@Ilyn
Yes, I felt this as soon as I booted it up. But then after playing a few hours I realised that the hours required to finish the game, and the repetitive nature of the environment, wouldn’t make it the best fit for VR after. Absolutely wouldn’t be surprised if a VR mode was released though, or at least hear that it was planned at some point.
Been playing those since it came out now, and it's a hard one to.explain. I tried to to my friend but apparently my synopsis was "less than glowing" 🤣
It is indeed a slow burner, but the satisfaction from even figuring out that you've unlocked something is nice. It's a nice, cozy game and a little.eerie.
Think a more child friendly (in a way) cluedo (or clue, for the americans) meets inscryption. If that was your bag. You'll love this.
Very good review and personally I think the score is absolutely spot on.
wait what, i thought that was the holy grail and greatest goty ever or something
@trev666 I also hate souls like games as well
Texts only in English? Are you kidding?
15h in the game now, i am fully commit now. It is a good game, but with many faults.
7 is a good score, i dont even know how other media has put 9 or 10s to the game....
As a longtime push square reader, this review doesn't resonate with the experience I had with the game, I know each reviewer has their own experience, but this is somehow wrong. I wanted to check out the game on Friday night and I was completely frozen in front of it for the past 3 days and have >30 hours and I expect next weekend to be the same. This was one of the best gaming experiences I've had and it is definitely a 10/10. I can delve deeper of what I don't agree with, but I urge people to go try it on their own.
A 7 score at best . I'm sorry, This is not GOTY. I was really looking forward to playing this considering all the high scores I was seeing. I was underwhelmed to say the least . Don't go into this game expecting to be hooked. It's definitely a slow burner. You probably need 3 to 5 hours before it clicks.
Gamers when everybody gives a game the same score: "What happened to REAL journalism? Tired of this paid-off woke world where people are afraid to give actual opinions."
Gamers when one website reviews a game somewhat lower than others: "What the HELL is this? Okay guys if you want a REAL, UNBAISED review I recommend looking at ANY other gaming site cuz these guys clearly don't know what they're talking about. Ever heard of READING THE ROOM?!?!"
