It's weird that Konami has taken this long to ship Contra: Operation Galuga, which is the classic Contra game fans have been asking for. After the damp turd that was 2019's Contra: Rogue Corps, the publisher handed the reins back to WayForward, the team behind 2008's Contra 4. Turns out that's all that was needed to get a great Contra game, since this latest effort nails what made the original run-'n'-gun experience so infectious in the first place.
While positioned as a reimagining of the original game, you'd be forgiven for thinking Contra: Operation Galuga was wholly original. There are some obvious throwbacks with some of the level designs and the bosses, and of course, a lot of inspiration gameplay-wise is taken from the NES original and the Mega Drive's Contra: Hard Corps; the movement and floaty jumps in particular are nailed down and feel exactly as you would expect.
Poster boys Bill and Lance return, of course, but new characters Ariana and Lucia fill out the roster. Barring Bill and Lance, each character has their own unique mechanics too (Ariana trades the dash for a slide, and Lucia can use a grappling hook), plus, bosses and side-characters have unique dialogue depending on who you pick (which is a nice touch). Not to mention, there's some bonus characters available for the side modes after you complete the story.
However, we're sure many of you hear the word Contra and immediately associate it with getting your arse beat into a pulp; luckily, there are ways around it this time. You have standard difficulty options, of course, and a brand new perk system that lets you purchase buffs for each character โ like adding extra hit-points or more i-frames on your dash. The game can be played in the classic "one hit and you're dead" style, or in a mode that gives you four hit points before losing a life. However, in our personal experience, we found the former punishingly difficult, while the latter made some sections a breeze due to the extra hit points.
The game's story mode is short overall, but thankfully there's an Arcade and Challenge mode that offer great replayability. The challenge mode in particular is a highlight as it doles out mini-challenges for you to blast through, like tricky platforming or a pacifist run of a level. So, all in all, this is undoubtedly the best game the series has had in a long time, and one fans of the classic games won't want to miss out on.

Why would anyone want to play this when there are AAAA games like Skull & Bones out there?
Used to play Contra on the snes - great times.
Got this one pre-ordered so really chuffed to read it is decent! Contra III or Super Probotector as it was called here in the UK was one of my favourite SNES game of all time, it was tough but fair!
I remember playing Contra, Super C and Contra 3 on nes/snes late into the night on weekends way back in the day. Great times
The contra series is something ive actually recently got in to. Started with the snes one and couldnt make it past stage 4 ๐๐๐
My first taste of this series was Gtyzor (as it was called in the UK) on the ZX Spectrum. Got the Contra Collection on the Switch and of course the entries with the SNES games with NSO. I guess I was a little surprised at the price point of this entry. Without thinking I was expecting this to be closer to the ยฃ25 mark when I first heard it.
Should imagine I will pick it up but not yet...
Still fond memories of SNES contra
This one looks like a return to form and I'm sure I'd enjoy trying this!
Thanks for the review
There's games I put off for too long that I have to complete first but this is definitely on my list to play at some point. The demo on PS5 was great (a complete and total mess on Switch, which was initially the system I was interested in getting it for) so that's the version I'll go with when I get around to buying it.
@Czar_Khastik I'm glad the stupidest comment I'll read this week happened on a Monday. Now I don't have to wonder.
@Czar_Khastik
Out of touch Ubisoft CEO would unironically think this
@vastamore Czar Khastik at your service even on rainy mondays
Happy!
I loved the original Contra and Hard Corps.
Not surprised it's great. Contra 4 is one of my all-time favorite 2D games, and probably my favorite Contra title as well.
Glad to see Konami working with them again.
Stoked for this, hopefully Konami doesn't gouge us too bad.
Edit: Ouch! $48.14 CAD with a 10% discount
@Gamer83 true, the switch demo was rough, but still could tell there's a great contra game there.
Looking forward to playing this one! I remember Neo Contra was so hard and you had to play it dam near perfect in order to get the actual ending. I resorted to playing solo due to never finding someone dedicated enough to be a try hard like I am.
@tameshiyaku
For sure. Great game, Switch just isn't a great way to play it, unfortunately.
Love Contra! I wish they would do a port of Shattered Soldier.
Is it just me or "new games in old genres", like this one here, when made or re-made for current gen, seem to lose enemy and sometimes even player visibility?
In the original games, enemies stood out from the background. Now everything in the background is so colorful, so detailed, just like the characters, that sometimes you lose track of enemy movement especially during chaotic fights.
It's becoming more and more eye-straining to keep up with it.
Contra isn't the only game, saw this also in new games from other IP's like Turtles, Streets of Rage and others.
Hell even in Mortal Kombat the backgrounds have become so colorful and full of moving objects in the latest games, that have become quite a distraction from the actual fight.
I could be wrong, but that's my impression.
Played the demo, liked it, will buy it in a sale someday.
@GrandValkyrie
I have similar cherished great memories that also include โsleep oversโ with good buds back in middle school circa 1994-1997 ๐๐๐ป
@PatrickMarioMan same here . I'm a bit older though as I played them all upon their releases maybe late 80s to early 90s.
I remember all us kids feeling cool on the playground at school cause we knew the Konami code up up down down etc
I remember throwing 10p's into the gryzor coin op when it arrived in Ronnie's arcade in Stockport Town centre. Happy days indeed. I loved super probotector on the snes (the uk's name for contra) and finished it many,many times over. I might bite on this just for the nostalgia of long lost youth and hair.
Iโm playing on my PlayStation Portal and runs fantastically well. Tough bad guy on the demo but a lot of fun. The ยฃ35 asking price feels steep and might bite when itโs ยฃ20
Anyone know what you get when you play this with a cleared demo save?
@GrandValkyrie
Thatโs awesome plus Iโm 40 ๐๐ป๐๐ค
So a worthy episode of one a best video-game franchises of all time. After the demo, I doubt it will overclass Hard Corps Uprising but nevermind, I take it.
in the late 80's we had a babysitter who would come over and set up his NES in the living room and play contra while we watched him play
Wayforward nailed the game, even the story is interesting. I do think the music is weak though, they just need to update the classic music rather than making change to it, the original music is still there but they change it too much.
