Diablo IV: Vessel of Hatred is the first major expansion for Blizzard's excellent action RPG, serving up throngs of awful new beasts to blast through and piles of shiny gear to gather. It ventures into the corrupted jungle of Nahantu, and a new storyline picks up from the base game's colossal cliffhanger ending. It's largely concerned with the Lord of Hatred himself, Mephisto, but the real star of the show here is the excellent new Spiritborn class, which, quite frankly, makes the others feel underpowered in comparison.
Taking place after the events of Diablo IV's campaign, Blizzard wisely allows newly created characters to jump straight into the Vessel of Hatred story. Obviously, you do you, but the storyline seems especially suited to the Spiritborn class (which involves the Spirit Realm and the powerful animal Spirit Guardians, which serve as its skills) and it's an absolute blast to play. Able to mix and match between Jaguar, Gorilla, Eagle, and Centipede abilities, it allows for a huge amount of build variety, focused on fire and physical damage, defence and endurance, attack speed and critical damage, and movement speed and poison, respectively.
Vessel of Hatred is designed to bring a character to the endgame, and you get a sped-up sort of levelling experience. Fans of the series' in-depth lore will likely find a lot to sink their teeth into in the narrative department; Diablo IV ends on a genuinely compelling cliffhanger, and Vessel of Hatred follows this thread to a genuinely surprising conclusion. Being Blizzard, it all looks and sounds phenomenal, but if you're not so interested in the complicated machinations and pantheon of Heaven and Hell, you may find yourself glazing over during some of the more indulgent story sections.
Companions have received a robust overhaul in the form of the Mercenaries system, introduced throughout the campaign questline. These NPC allies are surprisingly capable and get their own skill trees, allowing further customisation and gameplay options. For example, Subo, the Drunken Archer, can mark enemies, and killing them in a timely fashion will reduce ability cooldowns.
The Dark Citadel has been built up to be the series' first "raid", offering a cooperative experience for up to four players. A party finder rounds out the MMO-light experience, allowing players a way to easily gather a group and farm for powerful new gear.
While unlikely to convert any new adherents, Vessel of Hatred provides plenty of reasons to return to the dark world of Sanctuary. The Spiritborn class is the biggest draw here, but exploring Nahantu and delving into a dark new storyline make Vessel of Hatred worth the entry price.

I have about 1k hours in D4. Everything they changed is great BUT…..the campaign is boring and bad imo. I would give the campaign a 3, very disappointing and boring.
@alex8329 Hmmm.. do I go back? I've sunk 500 hours already and then got fed up with all the back and forth of nerfs. Is it worth the investment of more time?
I've bought the expansion but I've not jumped into it as a mate from work just bought d4 and the expansion so I'm playing through the main story and then we will jump into the expansion..so much has changed and for the better too. Awesome game.
@riceNpea nobody will answer for you that. If it annoyed already, then very likely you will get annoyed again easily. Spiritborn superb, other classes mediocre
@riceNpea Ohh you can have lots of fun, my only complaint is the abysmal thing they call a campaign. I also play for maybe a month and take take about 2 months break till next season. Less likely to get burned out that way
Is Diablo 4 playable if you never played a Diablo before? Might wanna dip a toe in ...
@Bramble yes. It's good. I enjoyed the gameplay, and if the grind has been improved then I'd recommend it to a newcomer. Watch some videos. It's a time sink so unless you're willing to spend at least 100-200 hours, don't bother. It's never ending
@Bramble Yes. I have not played Diablo 4 myself, but traditionally Diablo is a an easy to approach ARPG which can be more challenging if you decide to push into the harder difficulties and end game content.
Then ultimately if you decide you enjoy the genre you can move to the much more advanced games like Path of Exile which are the same style of gameplay with far greater build variety.
EDIT: Infact if you are only wanting to try the game style then PoE might be better to see if you enjoy the grinds as its free and D4 is pretty pricey if it turns out to be not your thing.
I've got this DLC as I bought the game with it included, but I've only spent 100 hours in the main campaign to finish it and it bored me to tears. Not sure I can go back - there's so many other games which don't send me to sleep playing it. I much preferred Diablo 3, that seemed way less boring to me.
Maybe if my wife bothers to get a character together couch co up might inject some fun, but I'm not feeling this game at all, push forward and press fire for 100 hours...
@Bramble D4 was my first Diablo. Bought it at launch and really enjoyed it. Still play it with friends from time to time.
Excited to play it but October is an insane month for new releases. The expansion will be better 4-5 months down the road anyways when Blizzard gets some balancing done
@Titntin This has been my experience too. I keep trying to like it but the tedium kicks in eventually. I've put in 116 hours but I keep bouncing off of it.
Maybe some couch co-op would fix it as you say, but otherwise, it's not my game.
@Titntin yeh I feel like a hoover.
@alex8329 i too have 1000 hours into D4 and i am loving it. Diablo is a top 3 franchise all time for me, so i might be a bit bias. I found the campaign to be better in D4 than in D3. Overall i will be playing this for years to come. I just hope they bring the paladin class back at some point. 😃
To be honest the spiritborn is the less interesting part of the DLC. It reminds me too much of D3 monk, ny least favorite class. I am on lvl60 paragon 40, like the changes so far. I will also finish this season (finished all season’s journey so far), just hope they will add more classes (faster) in the future (paladin, witch doctor my first picks).
@Titntin don’t think d4 has couch co-op, does it? Unless it comes with this expansion.
Can’t really get on with d4 myself either, it’s okay for 20-30 hours but I put 100s into D3. It’s just more fun to play!
Great expansion. Spirit born gonna be op this season to sell expansion, but next season other classes will be buffed.
@ScottyG Blizzard is balancing game every Season. It will never be "Balanced" nor finished.
@kyleforrester87
You made me google it Thank goodness I wasn't misguided, support for 2 player couch co up on ps5 confirmed.
I hate to be down on it cause Diablo 3 is such a great memory for me, but I have to be honest, I just dont get the same feels for this one. I only finished the campaign a couple of weeks back and Ive not continued, so maybe end game will get better? Maybe Id enjoy another class more? It will take a while till I try as there are so many good games to be played!
@kyleforrester87 It has Couch co-op from day one. Only "Guest" needs its own Blizzard account to log on and good to go. It is high Quality coach Co-op when I tried it out. Easy to play. Each can open skill tree/Inventory at same time.
I adore the Diablo series! That being said, the MMO-ness of IV put me off of it. Just doesn’t feel the same. I may get back into it.
@HonestHick They will. It will sell that Expansion like crazy for sure. It is all part of the game )
@REALAIS yeah for sure. I do like the new class tho. But a sword and shield class like you say will really explode. I am a ride or die Blizzard fan. Been with them through the good and bad. They are still my favorite dev team. I think now that they don’t have Bobby pushing his agenda on their game ideas and gameplay i think we might see some magic from Blizzard again. At least for me that is the hope haha 😀
@REALAIS
Why did you @ me and quote the word balanced and say finished? I never said either of those things.
@REALAIS @Titntin ah, sorry for the misinformation. That’s really good, then.
D3 just has a better rhythm and flow to the combat, and while the story is silly I found the d4 plot really dry and pretty complicated with all the names they throw at you. Plus d3 sends enemies ragdolling when you plough through them in ways 4 does not!
Might pick this up after I finish the campaign. Well maybe I should say if I finish the campaign as I'm nowhere near done.
@Titntin I don't know if you've played d4 since the latest update but it's a he'll of a lot better than it was at launch. I'm approaching 300 hours and whilst the campaign is mediocre I'm having a blast in the dungeons. The torment levels are mental but I have to concede that it's not for everybody. I enjoyed d3 and I really like d2 as I think that had the best story out of all of them. Have you tried path of exile?
Let's see here now:
You know, using people to spread the word that the new class available only in the expansion absolutely rules the game... "Get the expansion if you wanna give it a go!"
Yeah. Pay those 40$ now, and don't worry, eh? They'll nerf it later.
Maybe next season it'll be more helpful after they re-balance the classes...
The list could go on, but you get the picture. It's also mentioned at the end of each point above.
Gonna go now. See you in Sanctuary!
And don't lose hope, yes? It'll get better in time! I've already told my 6 years old son he'll have a blast with it in high-school!
@Titntin I was under the impression from a conversation a while back that you were boycotting this game. I'm glad you changed your mind even if you don't enjoy d4 that much but I was taken aback a bit that you bought it.
I’ve got 300+ hours in D4 so far and it’s amazing. I bounced off D3 so quickly so I’m glad to be enjoying my time with this one. Brings back memories from D2 days in high school.
@ScottyG you can't read your own "balancing" after 4-5 months?
Game gets balance update every 3 months. I just wanted to point out, that first big balancing is less than 4-5 mo ths away and secondly, don't expect it to be good or finished. You are giving some strange predictions and thats what I tried to point out.
But now, you are taking back, that you didnt sven mention balance in D4
@Northern_munkey
Hi mate. No Ive not tried path of exile, Ill have a look at that!
You have a good memory, I was not buying or playing this game at launch due to some of the stuff going on at Blizzard. But, things change, with new owners came new working practices and when I saw it in the sale 3 months back for £30 including this dlc, it seemed time to re evaluate 😂😂
Thanks to GamePass I have been enjoying Diablo IV, and for sure this new expansion it's a must to play.
@Titntin path of exile is a really good alternative to diablo. The only thing I wasn't too keen on was the crafting as its a bit convoluted and confusing. Considering it's a free to play title the updates and free content is immense. Not sure if it has couch co-op though but it's still well worth a butchers.
@Titntin @Northern_munkey it's worth saying that Path of Exile is a much more difficult gaming experience and you should be aware of that before you go into it
For all its faults Diablo 4 is very casual friendly in it's approach.
Path of Exile will spank your ass and laugh manically at you while doing it. It's a lot of fun if it clicks but can become complicated and / or frustrating quickly.
As it seems important to you just to clarify PoE doesn't have couch co-op. You can of course group up but all party members need separate accounts, installs etc
(Oh and just as a final fyi the Path of Exile 2 beta is launching in November. It might be worth keeping an eye on that as it's supposed to be much more approachable than the original. PoE 2 does apparently have 2 player split screen couch co-op out of the gate. Only one account needed and one install. 2nd player can either log in as a guest or on an existing account.)
So far i have 2178 hours logged in the base game with 9 max lvl druids all mid maxed to about 97%.I bought the expansion as well but have yet to really dig into the new area or class. The new class is so ridiculously OP that its taking the fun away from folks that want to play different classes. Due to this I'm taking a long break to touch some grass and enjoy some fly fishing untill spritborn gets nerffed lol
@RiverGenie thanks for the info as I didn't know if poe had couch co-op but I knew everything else you mentioned being a hard core diablo fan since the first game launched. I love them and it's my fave genre along side the souls games.
The only good thing left about Blizzard are the cinematics and their older games.
Oh I didn't realize that IV is a live service. I'm good.
@OMG_Waffles not sure how it's taking the fun away from people who want to play other classes? Just don't play the spirit born class...problem solved.
Been enjoying it, more so since they fixed the horrendous mob screeching/static sound (not by design!) when encountering very large mobs on the PS4 (XBone suffered from the same problem apparently).
Anyway, one recent fix later and it's playing really well.
One criticism: Every 10 feet in the jungle you encounter another large mob and every mob has a waller or mortar or freezing leader. Can get a bit monotonous?
Also, can't help thinking that the base game was more interesting (comes to something when you miss Lilith creeping around the place) & the variety of locations in the main game is better - so far it seems to be swamp, jungle, swamp, jungle...
@RiverGenie Thank you for that information mate, thats really helpful! Sounds like maybe I should wait till no 2 releases and give that a try 😊
@Northern_munkey Cheers dude! Looks like Ill be cgecking that one out! 👍
@alex8329 ...you played for a 1000 hrs yet you call it abysmal ??....just, what ?
Only the story from the expansion, everything else is very good. I thought I made that point clear, maybe I was not expressing myself properly. All the revamping of items, paragon, skills, extra activities is very good.
