For us, Guerrilla Games' Horizon series has been brilliant from the very start, but it's getting better each time we return to it. Horizon Forbidden West is an excellent sequel that builds upon the first game in practically every way — a larger, more varied open world, a better ensemble cast, more interesting side quests, and improved traversal, to name a few. Burning Shores, the DLC expansion, is largely more of the same, but adds just enough on top to make it well worth the visit.
Following on directly from the events of the main game, Sylens tasks Aloy with tracking down an important loose end in the titular region. We won't give any spoilers, but it's safe to say this expansion acts as a neat bridge from Forbidden West into Horizon 3. Guerrilla has doubled down on its bonkers sci-fi story, and it's delivered so earnestly that we can't help but love the nonsense. If you do too, and enjoyed what the base game offered up, you'll definitely enjoy that side of the narrative here.
But let's not get too ahead of ourselves. Aloy crash lands in the Burning Shores and is immediately confronted by Seyka, a member of the Quen tribe that's currently stranded and missing many of its people. This new character will join Aloy on her main quests, and she proves to be just as capable as our heroine, which is a rarity in these titles. She's another welcome addition to Horizon's wider cast, and one who challenges Aloy in new ways, helping to humanise a protagonist who was perhaps a little one-note in Forbidden West.
The main set of quests is five strong, and all of them are pretty lengthy. You're looking at about six to eight hours depending on your pace, and that's without considering the other stuff to do in the expansion. The story takes you to some fantastic locations, lays a bit of groundwork for the inevitable sequel, and, as has been heavily hinted, a Horus does indeed wake up. We'll just say that it's a spectacular finale; the scale of this setpiece is off the charts, and is likely a major reason why this DLC is PS5 only.
But the story only takes you to certain locations within the Burning Shores. The map is substantial — about a third of the size of the main game — and features a blend of dense forest, sandy beaches, open water, and flowing lava, with old world ruins to remind you this was once Los Angeles. It's visually gorgeous, as you'd expect, although there is noticeable pop-in while you're flying. While it's great fun to explore the map, some parts of the Burning Shores offer little to do beyond some sight-seeing. Main quests are mostly concentrated in one portion of the map, while a couple of side quests spread things out, but one or two areas are mostly skipped over.
That said, there are new collectables to find, a Relic Ruin to solve, a Cauldron to infiltrate, and a handful of new machines. The Waterwing will become your new best friend — it's a flying mount that can also dive beneath the water, making swimming much faster. There are two others to discover, both of which are great additions to the roster that'll test you in different ways.
There's also a selection of new weapons and outfits to employ, but more impactful is a range of new skills. A dozen extra skills and six more Valor Surges give you yet more combat options. Many introduce new ideas, like firing weapons while gliding, applying elemental damage with your spear, and dropping large shields. Others amp up existing mechanics; for example, one skill allows you to grapple to a knocked down machine and, if you time a button press right, apply Resonator energy, which you can shoot for a big burst of damage. These new skills (and a new level cap) give players some fresh options, and make the chaotic combat even more varied.
Conclusion
Like Frozen Wilds did with Horizon Zero Dawn, Burning Shores takes what was already great about Forbidden West and gives you a sizeable new playground and a bunch of extra toys to play with. The archipelago is great fun to explore by land, sea, or air, with plenty of interesting things to see and do. Certain areas feel a little underutilised, but overall this is a great expansion that continues Aloy's story and sets up for things to come in Horizon 3.

Really love this DLC. I hope they will improve platforming for Horizon 3, but aside from that, combat is great, graphics are beautiful, and Seyka is an awesome new character.
I love Guerrilla's absolute sci-fi stupidity, and already can't wait for the third game!
@LightningF13 Yeah, that's another factor, isn't it? It's actually not that expensive for what you get.
I can't believe Sony is just charging $20 for this. I thought for sure they'd try to get $30 or $40 out of it, with the latter being what I expected (and objectively too much). At this price, the DLC is a deal. I'm excited to dive into it.
Apparently there’s a hug between two characters in this which is way more impressive than it sounds. It’s one of the hardest things to animate realistically with all the different factors going into it.
@nessisonett a grown up hug? Dayum! 🤯
Even though this site is great with not spoiling stuff, I'm not going to read the review. I already bought it knowing it was going to be great. Will be playing tomorrow night and Saturday night. Can't wait to dive back in!
Tried HFW via Extra and sure, it's a pretty game, but blander than Blandy McBland from the planet Bland.
Enjoying it so far though not to far in. I agree on platforming, certain environments look too busy that it's sometimes tricky to know what's climbable.
Also happy to support such a great website, been here nearly ten years and nowhere else comes close to covering PlayStation like you guys.
Looking forward to jumping into this over the weekend now. Have a few side quests to finish up on the base game to get me back into the flow of thing first.
I had a great time with it last night. Haven't finished it yet but I can already say I feel like it's well worth the 20 bucks. The platforming bits are definitely not great though. Hopefully they tighten up the screws on that in the next game.
I enjoy it very much so far!!
That being said I would prefer it if the whole HFW was PS5 exclusive. That said, since the base game had a PS4 version and we only have one piece of DLC it kind of stinks for PS4 players to not be able to play it. And we all know that the complete game will be Steam Deck verified in a couple of months.
That said I have not beaten the DLC yet. I hope it recrifies the dump and anticlimactic ending of the base game.
@AdamNovice 🙏 Thank you!
Yeah... played a bit more last night after work and had tons of fun to close out my day. Fighting the big jumping robot was fantastic 😊
And the World, WOW!... everything has details. The Digital Artist talent on display here is mind blowing!
Perfect example of what I expect for my money - Fun AND amazing visuals. It is 2023, no more excuses.
And agree - crazy this is only $20!
I am really enjoying it but is it just me or does the color palette of Burning Shores feel more muted/bright? It doesn't feel as rich and colorful as the main game (the water is) but everything seems super sunny (I guess that is LA)
I'll read this when I'm done playing in a couple of weeks.😁
Do any of the new abilities or items alter the base game like Frozen Wilds content did or is everything 100% gated to the new area?
Also, do you get to explore the ruins of E3?
I just watched the Horus bit on Youtube, looked pretty cool. Lots of talking though - has the chatter been toned down a bit generally or is it the same as it apparently is in the base game?
Question: other than the final boss fight and the visuals: is there anything else about this that justifies the PS5 exclusivity?
The pop-in that's been mentioned sounds disappointing, and I really hope they sped up the flight speed too.
@colonelkilgore like there's never been hugs in video games before 😂 I presume its a same sex hug, otherwise old nessie wouldn't have mentioned it 🙄🤪
I am only about an hour in but really loving it so far, and damn is it gorgeous. Awesome next gen experience for a low entry fee
Its really hard to excuse the pop-in when they boasted about how this "needed" to be PS5 only, honestly this feels like BS said so they could cut working on two versions. As for these fancy clouds? You wouldn't even notice a difference if the Devs never pointed it out. Its fine a nice 7/10 but pretty underwhelming overall.
As a massive fan of the first hzd, I'm annoyed that this isn't coming to ps4. If they'd have done what they should have done in the first place, and made the base game a ps5 exclusive to showcase what the machine could do, and not release it on the older console, it'd be fine. But as it is, they DID decide to grab the cash from cross gen and then decide to spit in those users faces. Shame really as I would love more horizon.
@Logonogo does the quest start from inside forbidden west, or is it a separate option, you select from the main menu
@Atreus97 Nah nothing and i would argue with enough small changes the Horus could have worked on PS4. I feel the Devs just didn't want to work on the PS4 version anymore and came up with some BS to justify it.
@tallythwack you load up your last save of the main game and a few seconds after the game loads you get a call from Sylens asking you to meet him at Trinity’s house. After you speak to him there’s a cutscene with Aloy flying to the Burning Shores area.
Really enjoying it so far. Could end up the best expansion I've ever played?. £15.99 perfectly priced too for what you getting. Not only am I struggling to see if any other game is better looking than this on consoles but also the gameplay loop and variation of different enemy encounters is just so much fun. I can forgive that tiny bit of pop in when the performance feels silky smooth. Everything in HFW and Burning Shores is the opposite of bland
@WallyWest Well, aren't you mister negative? Who pooped in your cereal this morning?
Just an unbelievable series overall, hats off to the people who made this technical marvel.
Simply can't wait. Would have dived in yesterday but got hooked on FF6 Pixel Remaster. Haha.
Can anyone shed light on the nature of Aloy and Seyka's relationship?
I’m enjoying it so far but was initially disappointed that it didn’t look or play any different to Forbidden West - I had the flickering lighting and pop in too but mostly it’s been fine.
It’s also been a challenge having to learn all the moves again after a year gap between the main game and the dlc. There’s the crafting system, different weapon types and ammo, armour styles and upgrades, potions, traps and melee moves to relearn. Plus the new skills/moves in the dlc. It’s probably more enjoyable for those going straight into the dlc after completing the main game.
@nookie_egg Life hack: buy a PS5.
@jmac1686 Well sorry i expected more from something that kept boasting how it "needed" the PS5 and is impossible on PS4. In the end its just more of the same except it now has these fancy clouds that we only notice because the Devs told us how "special" they are.
I really hope they switch up how they make Horizon's open world for H3 because they really do feel like Ubi worlds but in the most bland and most lazy way possible. After recently replaying FC5 its quite amazing how much Horizon rip off those games. To say the visuals and machines carry this franchise is an understatement.
@Atreus97 the flight speed is still the same I think.
I am in the credits of the dlc swipes away a tear of joy
@WallyWest I agree that there's no reason for it to be PS5 only. I'm one of the people screaming at Sony to leave the PS4 behind but since you already released the base game there why not just finish and not screw over PS4 owners that bought the game?
@tallythwack if you've beaten the game you will get a call on the focus in-game to go to a known location, and from there you will start the DLC
@Gamer_Guy
I just think people don't like women personalities when they say she's bland.
She has a lot of personality in my opinion. Just talks too much.
@WallyWest "I really hope they switch up how they make Horizon's open world for H3 because they really do feel like Ubi worlds but in the most bland and most lazy way possible."
Sorry, but there's clearly a whole bunch of players here who completely disagree. I for one would be very happy for them to continue building on an engine and game that delivers the best looking open world game delivered in gaming. I love the fighting in HFW and consider its combat to be one its main draws. No Ubi game comes close.
Whilst its not universally praised, I also like the writing and the character acting - with the engine capturing the nuances of facial expression that help deliver the story perfectly for me.
A truly excellent DLC for those that enjoyed the original. People who didnt like the original shouldnt expect some DLC to change anything. The rest of us can rejoice.
@GodofCapcom they are correct, she is bland ,no sense of humour whatsoever, which i suppose is true to life....wahey 😁
@invictus4000 its a kissy ,kissy huggy huggy, relationship by all accounts, but she's always showed more interest in female characters ,so it should come as no suprise ,her attitude towards men,has always been like she's constantly rolling her eyes.
@WallyWest there are also those that 100% agree with your points.
@tallythwack
They are incorrect. Not everyone is funny, that does't make someone bland and she can be when she uses sarcasm. I bet the people that say she's bland, are the ones suspect of that. There's a resentment coming from them and you can tell due to the constant need of saying the game is bland.
@Skeletor85 noice
Stepping into Burning Shores from the base game is like taking off a pair of cheap sunglasses and suddenly getting hit in the face with how detailed and beautiful the world is. I feel a strong urge to hop into my little skiff and just do some sightseeing while playing Randy Newman’s “I Love LA” on repeat.

@Amnesiac so there's no update to the base ps5 game then ,to have parity with the dlc ,wouldve thought the new patch couldve sorted that
@Titntin Ranged combat is great but melee is awful. Yeah the world of Horizon looks stunning and visually the games look better then anything else but it doesn't change the fact the games are designed like a Ubi game and don't actually do anything new beyond fancy visuals and a great enemy type. For two releases in a row they have released next to another open world game that changes the game and how open worlds are made and they really show how bland the Horizon series is beyond the visuals and the machines. This DLC for me has shown how tired i am of the format GG are using for its open worlds and how bland they are beyond a surface level. Pretty but shallow really describes Horizon.
@KundaliniRising333 To be clear despite how negative i'm being and how tired i am of the gameplay loop GG use i do like the games, i like the DLC its just i want more from series and not another Far Cry Horizon. Zelda is out in a few weeks and that is just going to yet again reinforce how i feel about Horizon.
@tallythwack
And thanks for proving my point.
They really should somehow weave the Killzone universe into Horizon. It's already a ludicrous (in a good way) plot and having the Helghast be involved would be a neat twist
@invictus4000 no? Got no reason to at the minute. Also have much greater priorities. I have said they should cut the ps4 dead weight for ages, as a ps4 only owner, but they should not release the main game for the outdated ps4 and then not the dlc that's ridiculous.
@Loamy I expect story telling to jump next game as tv writers start to put things Into shape for the tv show.
@GodofCapcom you didn't really make any point to prove ,but its nice that you feel I have contributed, to your well being
@WallyWest thanks for sharing your views on this, I liked but didn't love the first game, and was considering picking this up, but your comment about melee is what is making me wait for a $20 sale on the base game.
@ceedj The melee is better in the sequel its just its still bad sadly.
@WallyWest yah I'm in the same boat. I have put in 100s of hrs between both horizon games and 100% completed both.
Yet I feel like forbidden west repeated the same shortcomings zero dawn had and instead only increased the size and spectacle of the game.
I remember having the same feeling I've gotten in every new assassins creed or far cry game with zero dawn. The feeling of open world burnout brought in by largely formulaic side content that gets mundane quickly. I in fact had to put it down and come back later. The minute a title becomes a chore to get through and the fun has fizzled out, considerably before the credits role, for me thats just not great.
With forbidden west it felt like that same Feeling actually came sooner and it's really because they just doubled down on all of that which are the unambitious shortcomings in its design. The maps just cluttered with repeteating icons and along with the baked in grind. It's such a disservice to the art design on display here.
They are gorgeous worlds to behold and the combat is awesome aside from the still undercooked melee, until it's not, also a consequence of repetition and bloat. The climbing is still linear and too restricted and the platforming doesn't work well with how they designed aloys movement. The story is fine but I do think how it's told lacks the emotion it's narrative demands.
I don't think these are bad games. I do think Forbidden west was very safe, samey, and doubled down on the ubisoftification. I think the disappointment for me is rooted in wasted potential the series has, and the lack of meaningful refinement of what are some shortcomings in its original design.
@WallyWest Thanks for your reply. I don't think we are going to agree on this though as I just don't feel the same as you. Maybe I'm just shallow
I've obviously not played the new zelda, but I thought BOTW was a little over-hyped for me. There were elements I thought were brilliant, but there was plenty of room for improvement imo. I'm not sure that game would have gotten all those 10's if it were not a Nintendo game tbh. But I'm also off piste there as well
Hope you enjoy Zelda when you get it..
@WallyWest Maybe I’m doing it wrong, but melee is pretty much just for human enemies, right? I mean, there’s not much point to bopping the robo dinosaurs with your pointy stick. In human to human scuffles I found the melee much improved. Especially the combos that bounce you off of enemies and give you a free ranged shot.
Looking forward to this when I finally finish Ragnarok. Shame about the story, I discussed with a couple of people on this site yesterday about how I didn't really get on with FWs story, and to hear they have doubled down on the nonsensical sci-fi is not the direction I had hoped they would go in. I'm sure I will still enjoy the gameplay and visuals, as I did the base game.
@NEStalgia all the skill trees in the base game are expanded, each with 2 passive abilities and 1 valour surge. You can chose these abilities anytime, even before starting the DLC.
That screenshot from the sky is like a freakin' hand drawn picture with so much detail in the distance. Insane.
Definitely want to pick this up after I'm finished with RE4 Remake. I'm itching to dive back into the game for the DLC.
@Atreus97 the clouds are absolutely next gen and can’t believe the review didn’t mention them
@WallyWest lol yes almost anything could be reduced or made worse to make it run on ps4 but the Horus fight would be exponentially worse trying to do it on ps4
@WallyWest yeah I’m sorry but no just no far cry’s open world is nothing like FW unless you’re talking about the forested areas of FW open world.
@KundaliniRising333 the Ubisoft complaint is so played out and not even used correctly anymore it’s crazy some people still try to use it. The sidequests were some of the best sidequests in a open world game since Witcher 3,the bandit camps were kept to an absolute minimum not to mention had a nice sidequest line to them with a payoff at the end,the collectibles were very few compared to other open world games especially Ubisoft ones not to mention most added cool little things to the world, some sidequests changed parts of the world which was awesome, you can take all icons off or pick and choose which ones show, the cauldrons were actually proper dungeons with fun puzzles to solve and the combat and machines are just sublime. I really like the AC and Far Cry series actually got the plat in quite a few different titles from both series and FW is nothing even remotely like them.
@dark_knightmare2 Content wise they are very much the same and its clear GG just copied what Ubi do in how they make an open world. End of the day the Ubi style of worlds are dying and FW feels dated and bland because of that. Horizon 3 will need to switch things up or it will be a relic.
I do get really bored of everything being compared to Ubisoft these days, all because a game is open world blah blah blah. Ubisoft ain't considered the very best top tier at open worlds nor do many other open world games aspire to be the Ubisoft formula. Any new open world game that gets released today is always compared to Ubisoft and if I was part of a team making an open world game today I'd be very offended by that comparison. Ubisoft games will never match the quality of HFW and Ghost of Tsushima, if they did I'd really like Ubisoft way more
@dark_knightmare2 Best side content since TW3? Dude it didn't even have the best side content in an open world game in the month it released in 😂
@Beerheadgamer82 Well if Devs stopped being lazy copying the Ubi blueprint and ideas of their own maybe the comparisons would stop.
Very bittersweet hearing Sylens for what is more than likely the final time.
@WallyWest Ubisoft didn't create open world games and they certainly wont be the last. You say Ideas of their own, so you are saying Ubisoft are the first to ever create an open world map with an icon on the map. Ubisoft didn't invent the map screen with icons on it. I don't see Ubisoft doing HFW sci-fi, Days Gone bikers in post apocalyptic or Ghost of Tsushima really old Japanese history games. If anything Ubisoft are the ones copying SuckerPunch with their next Japanese AC game
@Beerheadgamer82 Ubi invented the Ubi style of open worlds the style a lot of other games have copied heavily since Ubi started that style. Wanna know something funny? What BotW and Elden Ring did wasn't unique to them but because 95% of other open worlds all play the same those games felt new and refreshing despite the fact how they play was more common place prior to AC and FC3. FW is not that much different to FC5 in how its open world works and the types of content it gives you, that's not a good sign when FC5 was when people started getting tired of FC. Horizon gets by on its visuals and the machines as i've said, remove that stuff though and it would be thrown on the pile of forgettable open worlds that don't have 1 original idea between them.
@ChrisDeku Cool, thanks that's what I was wondering! I'm glad I waited to start!
@WallyWest Ubisoft didn't invent anything new that hadn't already been done before, just because they do loads of it doesn't mean theyre the pinnacle. I highly doubt a linear HFW game would be better than its open world version, it just wouldnt work for their ideas?. I like a lot of linear games too but so many games are just more suited to an open world enviroment regardless of what Ubisoft does
Q: can you use the water wing back in FW?
Words cannot express how happy this DLC made me there's a moment at the end that had me cheering and teary eyed I literally screamed YES YES YES THEY ACTUALLY DID IT!!! When it happened I cannot wait for Horizon III common Guerilla don't let that ending go to waste PLEASE 🙏. Oh and Seyka is phenomenal she's the best character in the series and my new favourite Horizon character (sorry Talanah) Guerilla outdid themselves here they should be proud
@WallyWest lol I said sidequests not side content so really please tell me what open world game had better sidequests that month I’ll wait. It’s not like it’s some outrageous statement go read many of the reviews for the game that stated the same thing
@WallyWest ok so explain what you mean by that I’m interested in how they copied Ubisoft. Those games aren’t dying that’s just lol worthy FW reviewed and sold extremely well. The majority of open world games are using the same template FW does and they sell because people like/love them.
@Keyblade-Dan im really really liking her so far but I don’t know if I like her better than Kotallo yet
@WallyWest horizon as a series has plenty of unique and original ideas like damn dude play something else if you don’t like the games
I forgot how beautiful this game was. Got to the settlement then went to bed. Can’t wait to explore more hopefully today 😎😎 this review got me even more excited to get at it
@dark_knightmare2 Kotallo is mega badass he's definitely I'm my top 5
@dark_knightmare2 Elden Ring beats its side quest/content by far, the most popular ending of ER is a result of a long massive side quest that runs alongside the main quest. Horizon has a few well written quests big deal so does AC Odyssey and Red Dead 2.
I say Ubi blueprint because it has towers to reveal msp, endless enemy camps, endless collectibles, a bloated icon full map, a fake sense of options between stealth and combat and so on.
I will stick playing Horizon because i do like the series i just don't love it.
@Gamer_Guy did you play the first game?
Removed - flaming/arguing
@Keyblade-Dan right his personal story is so good too and uplifting like the whole game actually when you think about it.
@dark_knightmare2 the clouds are insanely real. One thing that does bother me with HorizonFW though and the review does mention this, the pop in when flying. It’s so immersion breaking
@dark_knightmare2 I really loved the quest where you made that prosthetic arm for him it was a great moment
@WallyWest first off lol at sidequests in elden ring being better besides the one you mentioned they are ultra forgettable,it doesn’t have endless camps there’s like six main big camps and a dozen or so smaller ones throughout the gigantic map that all have have a quest line attached and a pay off at the end unlike the dozens upon dozens of copy and paste mines, bandit camps and mini dungeons of Elden Ring, they have five towers if you want to call them that but their actually moving huge talknecks that are also puzzles to solve to climb, once again the icons can all be turned off or you can pick and choose which ones are active not to mention 75 percent of them are fast travel camps or machine icons so you can farm the machine parts you need, it doesn’t have endless collectibles there’s like 49 or 50 which is nothing compared to an AC game, rdr 2,Ghostwire Tokyo etc and how is there a fake sense between stealth or combat they are both essential and viable. You don’t love the series that’s fine but it’s comical when someone tries to say it’s a Ubisoft game when it’s the furthest thing from it. I just love how professional reviewers who play every open world game loves FW and not one that I personally read said anything about it’s open world sucking or being Ubisoft like quite the opposite a lot of reviewers called it one of the best open world games of the last few years which I agree with.
@middyone I see you have best girl for your profile pic respect ^__^
@middyone please point me in the direction of my comment, where I stated it was a bad game,I was pointing out the issues I've got with the game ,im sorry if I think aloy has no sense of humour, and the game doesn't look as good as ragnarok imo ,forbidden west just isn't as good as zero dawn, thats why I've never finished it ,it bored me ,I dont find aloy very likeable, its clear youre in love with the game ,and it offends you when someone says something negative about it ,funny thing is hun ,not everyone can like the same things, who'd of thought 🙄
@Keyblade-Dan thanks lol. I haven't actually played the dlc yet but she looks so realistic and nice so yea lol.
@WallyWest I like the ubi stuff usually, there's something about forbidden west that really gets on my nerves ,I find the movement of aloy stiff, the mounts are useless and unnecessary,it has this odd shimmery look to the graphics ,the machines colour palletes are all basically the same ,red ,blue ,silver ,I love zero dawn, but I found forbidden west very boring.
@middyone Hope you enjoy it when you play it trust me she's an amazing character she's badass but really sweet and charming too she's awesome. Seyka became my favourite Horizon character after playing through the main story of the DLC so she has officially replaced Talanah as best girl 😅
For someone who LOVES Horizon however bought the game at launch, beat it within let's say a month and haven't touched it since, what's the difficulty curve on getting back into the game?
Games these days have complicated controls that utilize every button on the controller and then some.
I don't want to spend hours of my time reteaching myself how to play....
@belmont I just don't understand this. I love my exclusives as much as the next guy, but at the end of the day, how does someone else being able to enjoy a game detract from your experience with it? It's just the most selfish crap I've ever heard of...
@ItsBritneyB_tch This semi answers my question and is my problem with dlcs that release so long after a game. I would prefer studios just work on a new game and this is why I never played the expansion for the first game even though I love the game.
I have probably played 50 games since I played horizon Forbidden West, I don't remember how to play that game anymore and these dlcs often come with no tutorials. Yeah I'm not an idiot, I don't need to be taught how to duck under a tree branch, but the complicated portions of the game I now have to reteach myself because it takes 16 months to develop a dlc...
@GodofCapcom I don't think Alloy is bland, I think the entire Horizon story is bland, boring, stupid and forgettable.
I would much rather find a big robo dino and fight it and I couldn't give 2 craps why I'm doing it because the combat is probably the best in all of gaming and the machines are just outstanding in design, visuals and in game play.
And even with one of the most boring pointless stories in all of gaming I still consider both games to be masterful and damn near perfect.
@Keyblade-Dan Here's the problem, it took them 14 or 15 months to release a DLC. Horizon 3 must be at a minimum 4 years away
Have been diving back in the past couple days to reacquaint myself and try out the new DLC and both the base game and DLC are still a buggy mess for me so that's frustrating. Pop in all over the place (even in cut scenes along with stuff just moving/jumping around really weird). Robot dinos disappearing into nowhere in the middle of fights. Aloy still repeating things about an area even after you've already completed that story line.
It's pretty ridiculous. I thought after this much of a break and with all the updates the base game would at least be better. But nah.
after this can we get killzone back please?
@LeeHarveyOzgod I know it sucks but it'll be worth the wait I think and who knows with PS5 supposedly making development easier and having assets made for FW that can be carried over hopefully maybe the 3rd game might not take as long we'll see looking forward to it whenever it comes
@Keyblade-Dan hell yeah it was the conversations between aloy and him were so good
@Mikey856 yeah it does kind of suck but those clouds with those graphics while flying is just so great one of my best gaming memories this gen so far
@zupertramp man sounds like bad luck I fee for you because I’ve never had any of those problems except some pop in when flying. It topped digital foundry’s tech list last year for a reason it’s insanely good looking and runs great. Maybe delete and reinstall it to see if that maybe helps.
Removed - flaming/arguing
Game looks awesome, the waves I saw were gorgeous but as a game it never clicked with me for some reason. But for the fans: may you enjoy your Aloy gaming days 😉
I'm playing now haven't played since I got that platinum and I swear this is the best looking game I ever played.
@LeeHarveyOzgod love the series and I just can’t agree with you about the story. It’s one of the most unique stories in games it’s so pro environmental and anti tech/capitalism as well as having tons of humanity I love it. It also besides the Mass Effect series has my favorite cultures with the tribes met so far being so unique and cool with awesome histories of how they came to be with unique twists on the old world shaping them to be what they are in the game.
@tallythwack I remember there are points where she does have a sense of humour. you would know that if you actually finished the game or did more than a couple side quests. i'm trying to figure out how you possibly though she had one in the first game. but you got to look at it from her perspective...would you be laughing and cracking jokes all the time if you had the weight of the world on your shoulders and a time sensitive mission? I'm sure you wouldn't so It's understandable. in case you haven't noticed...she was raised in the woods by herself, had no mother, was shunned and made fun of her whole life lol...she ain't very social and it takes time to be that way as well. you said it was boring which with all the different stuff you can do in the world...I have no idea how. it's better than zero dawn for real. yes I do love the game because i've been playing for way longer than you. you didn't just say something negative...you literally went in on it and made fun of it in two comments lol. you don't like it cool but you're going in hard. aloy's movement being stiff is just you being bad at playing the game lol...let's be honest here. bro is really annoyed about more mounts lol. red blue, silver, gold, purple are all the machine colors and that is better than the one color we had in zero dawn white. bro is fuming for real lol.
@dark_knightmare2 yeah I've run it on 2 different ps5s. and it may be bad luck as I know people in real life playing it that don't have these issues but it's no less frustrating. I still even have this quest that won't complete for the salvage contracts because it's glitched and just moments ago I was fighting the bilegut or whatever and it just straight vanished and seyka started talking like we beat it. Like bruh why is my game trash?
Love the game for the record just hate dealing with this buggy bs.
@zupertramp damn yeah that sucks I feel bad man I can’t think of anything else that might help
Spoiler alert! At the end you get to choose if you want Aloy to be romantic or not.
@middyone im level 47 and done a lot of sidequests ,at what point does she develop a sense of humour ? Maybe point out a particular sidequest, where shes not moaning about one thing or another and looks like she's seriously constipated, humans use humour in most situations, especially dire ones, she's probably the worst character in any Sony first party game.
@Gamer_Guy Is this because you completed the first Horizon game?
The reason I ask is because much as I enjoyed the first game and continued exploring after I finished, the thought of doing the same round again had no appeal for me.
Or is the sequel different enough to make the world worth going back into?
@nathanSF I did the same with the first game. I explored even after I finished the game.
I preferred the soundtrack of the first game much more while exploring. The second game had a few good tracks but the ones I liked only played in some small certain sections.
I definitely didn't feel the same pull to exploring Forbidden West the way I did Zero Dawn.
@GreatAuk
Thanks for that. Good to know
Finally got to playing this DLC. Holy Crap. The next publisher tells me that they could not optimize their game for higher frame rates and keep graphic fidelity are complete liers.
@tallythwack she doesn't this dude really enjoys the game and thus attacks anyone who disagrees with him.
She has essentially no personality and the voice acting is flat across the entirety of both games having put over a hundred hrs 100% completing each game. This isn't just a minority opinion either. However, it's possible that one may see humor where most don't simply because of their own sense of humor. So could just be an instance where one can agree to disagree. However most that attack an opinion don't seem to have the capacity to do so.
Most reviews cite this issue, that was carried over from zero dawn along with a myriad of other critiques Guerilla continues to leave unaddressed. Which are minor and fixable enough to where it's baffling they haven't even tried to elevate this from good to greatness, especially when their chosen release window for both games and now this dlc is pancaked in between trendy herd mentality heavier hitter releases.
It's best to converse with those that genuinely want to converse rather than attack you personally or call you negative merely for sharing an opinion that differs from their own.
Question..does one need to complete FW do access the DLC??
@0niguy yes, you have to complete the main questline in the base game.
@KundaliniRising333 thankyou, I thought it was just me ha ha ,I wasn't saying the game is bad ,just its faults ,of which I feel it has many ,not just aloy
@KundaliniRising333 ok great..asking my lil brother he's never finished
Hopefully the flying pop-in issues are fixed fast! Otherwise very much looking forward to playing, just have to experience Forbidden West first.
Played a lot yesterday. Trully the best graphics I ever seen in a game. Great content, can't wait to play more.
Best visual experience I had on PS5! It’s a marvel to just go around - I wish one day we get a Zelda that has this kind of visual WOW factor like OOT did when I was a kid.
Welp I know what I am playing after Zelda. Never beat the first game (backlog is really hard to manage when you own all systems) but I think I will just start over and play the whole series back to back. Does mean I won’t be getting spiderman 2 day 1 now but sacrifices must be made.
@dark_knightmare2 I know right lol. It’s sooooo good
@KundaliniRising333 hold on Aloy supposedly doesn’t have a personality lol. You cite reviews when the vast majority of reviews praise Aloy as a character as well as the game as a whole and almost every review mentioned that FW was better than Zero Dawn in almost every way. Guerilla def put the work in to address criticisms from Zero Dawn and now Burning Shores even addressed some of the few criticisms from FW. The games are great which is why they review extremely high, get nominated for goty awards at all major award shows and sell extremely well. Aloy has tons of cosplayers and has shown up in other companies games because she is very popular and people love her.
@dark_knightmare2 oh I have no doubt many liker her. The game isn't bad, it's just good and could be great in my personal opinion.
I personally like Aloy in terms of character design, I just don't think AB gives emotion that match the story beats, and thus she falls flat for me on that front. Totally respect those that love her. Just as the game as a whole, she is acted fine, not bad, but not great imo.
If you think there is nothing the devs can improve upon at this point with the series, then so be it, that's a totally fine view for sure. I simply think there are a ton of things they can refine with core gameplay design that would do wonders for elevating it to greatness.
