Your teenage years are undoubtedly some of the hardest years of your life. Raging hormones, school, navigating romance for the first time, aliens threatening to destroy your home and family… Now, imagine all of that in a timeloop that you're destined to repeat over and over, and you have I Was A Teenage Exocolonist.
Growing up on the colony of Vertumna, you'll choose how to spend your time — studying, slacking off, or helping out around the place. These decisions will lead to you obtaining cards for your deck of major life moments. Each card has a category and a value, and your deck is used to play a poker-esque game at the end of each in-game month to determine how well you performed each activity.
Everything you choose to partake in develops your skills — there are 15 in total, and these skills will open up certain decisions later down the line. If you want to battle aliens, you'll have to raise your courage and toughness. To cure an illness, you'll need to raise your biology skill. There's a multitude of ways you can live out your life.
At the end of your teens, you'll lose control of the game and it'll show you how the rest of your life panned out. You'll then live your adolescence over and over again. Will you learn from past mistakes, and are there any major events that can be avoided by making different decisions? There's so much potential to see different events and explore different story branches, it's quite incredible. There are 50 endings to find, and while this can feel overwhelming, one playthrough can be completed quite quickly. Each cycle is so enjoyable as you set out to find new experiences, it's a blast trying to see all of the available endings.
Along with the major plot points, there's also a whole cast of characters you can build relationships with — you're not growing up on this alien planet alone, after all. With 10 dateable characters, there's a lot of romancing to be done, and some really interesting characters to explore. Each one has preferences and dislikes to learn, along with birthdays and other information.
I Was A Teenage Exocolonist is a fun visit through adolescence which begs the player to keep living life to the max, experiencing all the game can offer. It's a beautifully artistic game, with many opportunities for a unique experience every time you play.
