Inscryption is one of those games where the less you know the better. A card battling roguelike on first impression, it's what happens outside those duels where the true magic lies. Daniel Mullins has crafted a deceiving title full of layers and surprises; pulling them back and learning how they tick is what makes Inscryption great.
Structured sort of like a Dungeons & Dragons campaign, a menacing figure sits across from you at a table upon which card battles are played. You must win each match by scoring points through attack damage and utilising the abilities of the cards in your deck. In-between encounters, the silhouette opposite takes on different personalities as you encounter situations rewarding new cards, items, and chances to upgrade your deck. If you lose two matches in any single area or succumb to a boss, you'll be sent back to the beginning.
Every battle remains engaging and intense, with the luck of the draw playing a large role in whether you succeed or fail. Improving your deck with better cards is satisfying, and coming to terms with boss mechanics means you can more easily beat them the second time around. Inscryption is a really solid card battler on par with the best the genre has to offer, but its secrets — which are plentiful — remain the real reason to play the game.
Leaving the table to explore your surroundings leads to secrets, puzzles, and discoveries you would never expect out of a game based on the screenshots accompanying this review. Trust us: you don't want to be spoiled. As such, we'll have to dance around this large element of the game to preserve the surprise. If you're in need of something that truly does go off the rails — in a very, very good way — then Inscryption must be top of your wishlist.
Porting the game over from PC has introduced a few slightly awkward control options, but they're something you'll get used to. Furthermore, this is a consistently difficult title so accept it'll take multiple runs before you find your feet.
Inscryption is a great card battler, but to even call it that sells what is a truly unique experience short. If you're at all interested in what else it has to offer, close this webpage, boot up your PS5, and buy the game. Keep yourself in the dark. You're better off for it.

I put this on my wishlist the second I saw it as 'upcoming' on the PSN store, and I’ll pick it up post haste. I’ve always been intrigued by Inscryption, and I can’t wait to finally get to play it. As it stands, I know very little about the game, and that’s the way it’ll stay until I experience it for myself.
I still have stuff I want to play before this but It's on my "100% playing this soon" list
Hey this looks cool. What's the ££?
@kyleforrester87 It's £15.99
I've heard great things.
Alongside ANNO: Mutationem and ROM: Read Only Memories, this is one of those indies I've been kicking myself for not getting to yet.
@Ralizah I picked up ANNO yesterday on the Switch and it’s awesome. I personally think it’s a must play - the aesthetic is great, and the combat is a blast.
I also want to play Inscryption. I’m hoping the Switch will get it, as I think it seems like a great handheld game. That said, I’ll probably just buy it for the PS5 and see what all the hype is about.
I've heard amazing things about this, but also heard its concepts thrive a bit better on PC, with some of the meta stuff. May be wrong though! I tried the demo and my laptop seemed to run it fine, so will probably go for it on there.
@BlackMayge Yeah, I'm waiting on a possible Switch version of Inscryption. I just know this is the sort of game I'm never gonna get to unless it's on a portable console.
Well, if that never happens, I'll eventually own a Steam Deck, and I'll get to it then.
ANNO looks fabulous. It would've been a day one buy for me if I wasn't already buried under a half-dozen other games.
Well after passing my crappy pension paper on Wednesday I have nothing to study for the next few weeks and have loads of free time (until my next book arrives). So I am all over this later today. Thanks for the review.
Started it last night, very fun and weird
Ok I’m intrigued. Will pick this up when I clear my backlog a little.
Devolver Digital with another interesting game that their publishing.
@LiamCroft nice! Tell me, would you buy it for me if we were buddies IRL?
@kyleforrester87 Of course I would Kyle!
@LiamCroft wheeeyy! Thanks man.
Played it on PC last year, loved it enough to double dip on PS now and play it again. This dev does not miss.
I love the developers previous games (Pony Island and the Hex)
But some reason have yet to finish inscription......I stalled on the game because of the difficulty?
With the previous titles the difficulty was on par with a walking simulator.
As much as I liked the card game.....I often find myself against unfair odds. It doesnt help that I cant remember what all the map icons mean. Ending up on 'events' I dont get much benefit from.
Ill probably do a couple of run then get fustrated and not play for a while.
Whilst people rave on about the "first act".........I just want to get bloody past it.
Im sure it will click eventually and Ill love the title as much as the developers previous title
Upgrade that mantis! I had one that did 3 damage across 3 squares, instant victory! @LiamCroft, no spoilers obvs but curious how some of the things from pc, that felt like they could only ever work on pc were handled in a console port?
I 100%'d this game on PC. One of the best, most interesting, unique games I've played the last few years. Absolutely adore this game and it turned me onto not just this dev but also the escape room & roguelike deckbuilder genres. It does feel like it'd be weird to play with a controller tho.
This sounds far too interesting to pass up. Thanks for the review!
A card rouge like? Nah, not my type of game really but I'm sure it will be fun for people that are into this kind of game
@Ralizah I am waiting for a Switch version too. Inscrpytion and hopefully:
Noita
Vampire Survivors
Wildermyth
Mass Effect Legendary please.
I've heard nothing but good things about this, but I'm also avoiding all content about it as I wanna play it knowing the least about it as possible.
Yep, this is a great game.
Play it.
If too expensive for you right now, or you are playing other things, go ahead and put it on your wishlist.
Well worth it.
So, I decided to buy it and I played for about 20-30 minutes and it just wasn’t my cup of tea. I thought it was being too vague for its own good, and it just wasn’t clicking for me. I’m sure if I sat down and took my time with it I would come to appreciate it more, but for now, I think I’ll let it sink into my backlog until a Switch announcement.
GOTY 2021 if you ask me 😃
Just finished the game. Absolutely fantastic. Creativity on this game is over the roof. I also should thank ps stars programme for opportunity to play this game, since I got it recommended from playstation in the objective. Bravo
This game is freaking amazing. And addicting...
