Since the end of the seventh console generation, the MX vs. ATV series has been foundering. Both of the titles to hit the PS4 were generally maligned, and things aren’t looking much better on the PS5.
The main part of the game – races with dirt bikes, ATVs, and UTVs – functions as both a blessing and a curse. Offering multiple racing disciplines in one package is certainly an alluring idea. But what this means is that rather than getting one focused experience, you wind up with three diluted options, all of which you must use to progress the campaign.
ATVs handle the best, offering fun, arcade racing, and adequate controls. But dirt bikes and UTVs need a lot of work. The UTVs control so poorly that driving in a straight line becomes a challenge. They also get caught on environmental objects easily, abruptly halting all momentum. The game would actually have felt more rewarding if UTVs were simply not present in the game, that’s how unpleasant driving them feels.
The dirt bikes, while better than UTVs, also leave much to be desired. One of the new features of the game is a newly refined physics system, but cornering and picking your lines in the tracks feels weightless and awkward. A more elaborate use of the DualSense’s rumble features could have helped with tactility, but the fact remains that the bike handling just feels wrong.
Collisions don’t help either, as many obstacles you should avoid have no noticeable impact on your rider, making for a start and stop experience filled with heavy reliance on the reset button. The reset button itself doesn’t feel good to use either. Auto resets vary in time from instant to long enough that you might think the game is broken, with no discernible pattern. Meanwhile, the manual reset button takes an eternity to activate, so it’s a coin toss which option will get you back in the race fastest. Unless, of course, you respawn and get flattened by an AI rider, many of which seem to think crashing into a wall is the only way to successfully make a turn.
If there’s one bright spot, it’s the new “trails” game mode, a checkpoint-type race that has more varied terrain. It’s quite fun, and very chaotic, serving as the high point amid innumerable lows. And that about sums MX vs. ATV Legends up: at its core, this is a buggy, flawed mess that falls far short of other racers on the market.

Was looking to get back into the MX vs ATV train after Reflex but guess not. Oof
This review is gonna sway so many people, including me
Well, this doesn't look good. Maybe after some patches, it'll be decent. This is like the first MXvATV without multiplayer trophies, so I'm mildly disappointed with the final results.
@RocketRaja
@MonkeyGibs Never say never, but it's going to need a lotttttttt of patches!
@AnnetteM Sadly I would keep waiting I was hopeful! I want a good motocross game!
The random game review dude was “assigning” random games from the new Plus tiers to anyone that asked. So, I asked. I got this pile of crap. I went as far as to download it onto my system but after seeing the metacritic score and watching the trailer I just deleted it. I couldn’t stand the thought of wasting my time with this garbage and of course popping one or two bronze trophies in the process, leaving a permanent reminder.
Ouch. Maybe I wont then....
Can somebody PLEASE make a new Motorstorm (apocalypse) type game for the love of god!
EA, you got pretty much the best studio out of all of them by buying Evolution. Just do it!
@AnnetteM which one would you say was the best or your favorite?
@Dr-M My favorite is Untamed just because that was the first one I played and spent a ton of hours when I was a kid. The best I have played so far is Reflex. I have yet to revisit either of them but might start soon to catch up and see how the franchise has held up until recently. Unfortunately, it seems it's scraping by...
@AnnetteM I mean honestly this review drops the ball in almost every facet. Watch one of the reviews online... This is a fun game.
@RocketRaja it honestly shouldn't, it's dead wrong.
@BoldAndBrash Yesssss!!!
@AnnetteM I loved untamed back in the day! And Unleashed. I probably spent more time with the standalone MX games though. Superfly I think one of them was called? Regular ol' vanilla MX Unleashed was the first one I bought I think?
@gbanas92 I actually never got around to try out the standalone ones but Superfly was one I always wanted to play. Primarily because it reminded me a lot of another title outside of the MX vs ATV franchise, FreekStyle. Which now that I am looking them up, they came out on the same year haha!
It all went downhill when they introduced that new system where you use the right analog stick to balance yourself. The previous games (which focused on MX only) were pretty good.
@GusBH You can turn that off, so turning is entirely done with the left stick still, for what that's worth!
@AnnetteM Yeah, I used to play split-screen Superfly with my dad all the time. And my personal fav, MTX Mototrax! FreekStyle I have heard of, but I never played it myself. I do still remember the box art though haha
@gbanas92 FreekStyle is as wacky as the box art looks like. Definitely check it out! Crazy flips and tricks and a tad bit unrealistic haha. Banger soundtrack. I will add MTX Mototrax to my list of motorcycle racing games to try!
@BoldAndBrash A simple port to next-gen consoles or even PC would be nice... but then again it is a PS3 title so yeah.... Maybe add to streaming with the new PS Plus?
@AnnetteM Thank you for answering my question.
Recently I wanted to play a different racing game and got interested in the series, and was hoping to play the last release but sadly it seems I might try Reflex instead.
@Dr-M Np! If anything, going back would probably allow you to have a better overview of the series going forward if Reflex hooks you up. Def keep us on the loop if you liked the series!
@AnnetteM okay, I will hunt a copy and get back to you once I play it.
@AnnetteM Yeah that sounds about right. Back in the old days of EA Big! But yeah, definitely not a cover image that screams simulation racer haha
I used to love Mototrax so much back in the day, haven't played I for years now though. Let me know if you do pick it up at some point!
@gbanas92 For sure!
I still miss the ATV Offroad Fury games, especially the first two. I'd spend hours making ridiculously long and complex courses and then race them against three of my friends/relatives via splitscreen. We had some that ran through barns, up staircases, and had some absolutely insane jumps. And even then many of our races still ended up being nail-biters. Great times; I wish developers still included modes like that, but sadly endless replayability and value aren't exactly the first thing on their minds anymore.
@BoldAndBrash Well, technically it was the Codies that bought out what was left of Evolution and then EA (sob!) bought out Codemasters, so EA probably have NO IDEA as to what talent they have under them.
Was playing Motorstorm: Pacific Rift the other day on the PS3 and it still stands up today. Incidentally, it doesn't seem to be included on the PS+++ titles though, only Apocalypse?
A PS4/5 remix of the original ones would have flown off the shelves, given how dire the PS4 arcade racer scene has been.
@sanderson72 @AnnetteM
Sooo Apocalypse is on the PS+ collection? Guess I'm gonna have to look into the service after all!
But then Codemasters was responsible for Onrush? That was a bit underwhelming, so hopefully EA can get something out of them, but... EA.
Which one is on ps plus extra? The previous title?
@BoldAndBrash @daveofduncan @AnnetteM Motorstorm Apocalypse was listed on the PS+++ PS3 titles (as was Motorstorm RC) but the (IMO) better Pacific Rift is still MIA.

MotorStorm Apocalypse PS3
MotorStorm RC PS3
@sanderson72
That's good to hear, thanks!
Yeah I loved the dirt and the amazon settings as well, but for me, driving out of falling building while some plane is crashing nearby to create another path you can drive through while Noisia is pumping in the background is just the pinnacle of pinnacles.
Would love to see PR on there as well!
Just port the original Motorstorm already. Just get it to run at 4k60, don’t do anything else and I’ll give you 40 bucks…
@gbanas92 I couldn't find the settings for this. But it was long time ago.
@GusBH I'm not sure where it would be or if it was in the older games, but on this newest one, there's a toggle for it.
Setting -> Gameplay -> Steering. It might be in a similar place on the past ones too if they had the option though!
