You’d think Pinball FX – the rebooted pinball compilation from Hungarian developer Zen Studios – would be the least controversial release of the year, wouldn’t you? But this is the video game industry, and controversy is effectively its middle name. So, the studio has come under intense scrutiny for not allowing owners of its previous efforts – like Pinball FX3 – to carry forward their DLC. It’s a fair comment when you consider, despite being remastered in Unreal Engine, the meat-and-potatoes of the experience remain very much the same.
If anything, this latest effort mostly brings with it a bunch of messy monetisation schemes. The headline here is the Pinball Pass, which can be purchased in monthly or annual permutations. The idea here is that, with a single transaction, you can get access to almost all of the game’s included tables, which totals 86 right now. More importantly, the team is promising that a further 34 will be added through the summer, which is a lot of pinball.
But the annual pass retails for around £79.99/$99.99, which is an outrageous outlay, regardless of the quality and breadth of the content on offer. We fully appreciate that modelling these tables in 4K comes at significant cost and effort to the developer, but that figure breaks a mental barrier for us – it’s just too much for digital pinball, no matter how good and how much. You can earn some free daily passes through the new Events mode (more on that in a moment), but the subscription is a bust for us.
Apparently Zen Studios already knows that, though, hence it’s offering a more traditional a la carte DLC system as well. Many of the tables have been bundled together, allowing you to buy several at once, like the Star Wars Pinball and Marvel Pinball packs. More high profile tables, like Indiana Jones and The Addams Family, are available standalone and are significantly more expensive – but we suppose this is understandable, given their legendary status among pinball fans.
The problem, as we’ve already alluded to, is that if you bought some of these tables for Pinball FX3, you can’t import them into the latest game. And that’s unfortunate, because the developer already set the precedent with previous releases that their content is future proof. We can understand the studio’s desire to focus on its bottom line – it’s been fairly generous for the best part of a decade now – but this was never going to go down well, and was always going to sour enthusiasts. We’re obviously always going to side with consumers, but we can see both sides.
The core pinball, at least, is fantastic – although a little bit of input lag is affecting our experience right now. It’s not unplayable by any stretch, but we hope the developer can tighten up the controls and make the flippers that little bit snappier with future iterations. We’re also struggling with the default HDR settings, as the title looks unintentionally dark – but this can be solved by pumping up the brightness a bit.
Once you get beyond all these issues, though, the game is great. Each table now has a cumulative progression system, which rewards points earned with collectible items. You can use these to personalise your game room, which is a cute little touch. The new Events mode also feeds into this, offering a free Battle Pass, which allows you to complete mini gameplay challenges in order to fill a progression bar and unlock even more customisation options.
Each table comes with a variety of modes, ranging from classic gameplay to neat variations, like timed sessions and flipper limitations. For those who want a more arcade experience, there are even power-ups you can use to maximise your score, and you can faff with all of these toggles when creating Tournaments for friends, family, and strangers to try. Naturally, most users are choosing to use the free table to create Tournaments with, but you can filter the content to find a contest you want to compete in.
While we’ve always enjoyed Zen Studios’ tables, its inclusion of classics from the likes of Williams and Bally has completely transformed the experience for us. We already love boards like No Good Gofers and Bride of Pin Bot, and even though we don’t think any of the included camera angles are ideal, we’ve still had an amazing time replaying them here. World Cup Soccer from Williams has also been recently added, and it’s just an outstanding table.
But as we’ve already alluded to, there are some great original efforts from the Budapest-based outfit as well: Grimm Tales, inspired by a bunch of famous fairy tales, has a lovely gothic theme to it, while Adventure Land is a literal rollercoaster of a board, filled with rails and giant animated objects. If you do stump up for one of the aforementioned Pinball Passes, you’ll find a veritable treasure trove of content to dig through.
Conclusion
The slight input lag and dark visuals are disappointing, but Pinball FX has so much content that pinball fans will struggle not to find the fun here. The biggest problem with this package is its messy monetisation: the developer can’t decide whether to lean on its subscription-style Pinball Pass or traditional DLC, and its hybrid approach is neither here nor there really. When you consider that no previously purchased content carries across, it’s hard to recommend reinvesting so heavily here – especially when, even with all the bells and whistles, the core nuts-and-bolts of playing many of these tables remains the same as in past games.

Glad you mentioned the HDR issues. I thought my eyesight was going.
I poured hours into the old Zen Pinball on a bunch of different Sony systems and got way more entertainment value out of them than what I paid for more than10 years ago. I don’t mind buying them again on a new system with a few touch ups.
What I do mind is the piecemeal DLC/season pass stuff. I understand that the model of make a comprehensive game and sell it may not be viable long term, but surely this amalgamation of annoying monetization practices isn’t the best way forward.
I loved the last couple of Pinball FX releases and tables but this is one step too far. Ever since they charged £15 for just one Indiana Jones table, they've lost me.
This is one of my favourite franchises I'm happy to leave in the sunset as it stands.
Yeah, due to the rebuy thing I stopped buying tables and keep my old Pinball FX3.
It's a horrible decision that probably cost them more than when they would have gone the import route as no future sale from me.
I still love the old Pinball Arcade by Farsight Studios. Might not be 4K, but very playable and very customisable too.
I accumulated a massive collection of tables for that, including all the Williams tables before they had to delete them for sale when they lost the license to this company. Always count myself very fortunate when I fire up absolute classics like Arabian Nights or Medieval Madness.
I won’t be playing this one as I’ve spent years building up my table collection. I actually thought “wow, did these guys get bought out by Epic? Aaaah, Embracer Group, gotcha.” Such a shame when huge companies come in and destroy things they don’t understand to make a few bucks for their stockholders and the board.
The lack of carry over, and the subscription model were clues enough, but their launch trailer was made for such a general audience, I knew they were basically trying to be the Funko Pop of pinball. “All your favorite brands”, “even if you don’t play pinball”, etc.
One other thing I'd mention here is they got rid of all the Trophies for each table. You can still complete those challenges that were traditionally Trophies, but instead you unlock some in-game content now, rather than a Trophy for your PlayStation account.
@Gamer_Guy I really loved The Pinball Arcade, too. I played that a lot on my PS Vita back in the day!
I paid less than the annual pass for PS Plus Premium for a year during a sale last year! You've got to have a pinball addiction to pay that kind of money for way less pinball tables than choice of games on Premium. Not even a PSVR2 version makes that seem worth it.
Agreed. The gameplay was great but the current prices are laughable. HDR was also so dark I couldn’t even keep track of the ball. Thankfully, the settings allow you to turn the brightness up.
That said… they need to lower the prices. To get the few tables I want I’d need to put in like $60. Absolutely ridiculous.
I purchased every table in Pinball FX3 I will be sticking to that game. No way I will pay $100 for a 1 year access.
I find it sorta ironic pinball enthusiasts, players who used to spend countless quarters enjoying their pastime, don't like paying money to enjoy their pastime.
Seems to me what happened is this series decided to cater to a more hardcore enthusiast piece of the market.
@get2sammyb are the Alien tables on there?
Edit: No, they're not. I bought the universal pack though and I'm loving a bit of high score chasing. Thanks for the review!
@Gamer_Guy Still give my ps4 a spin with it. Didn't pick up as many tables as a buddy of mine but everything felt just right & snappy.
Had a try of older Pinball Fx but just felt a touch more floaty ball at the time.
Moreso just hate the paywalling like has been done here.
I have so many Zen Pinball/FX2 tables…I’d probably spend less at a real arcade in quarters. Not doing it again.
I dived into this last week after having played FX3 on Switch a lot. They already addressed the input lag btw. I am okay buying tables, the Marvel, Starwars and classics pack offer tables at around 2 bucks/table and Zen has already promised that they are gonna discount all legacy tables 33% asap.
Thx for the brightness tip! Gonna b having fun with this for years 2 come =)
After 3 amazing pinball FX/zen pinball games this is a sad way to reboot the IP.
Tilt! This is a shame. What a horrible way to reboot. I guess I'll never upgrade past FX3, which is totally fine with me.
While I think it sucks you have to admit that there is probably a quite small playerbase for this. If all the DLC is brought forward then who else is left to buy it now?
Again I don't think this is a good enough excuse especially with more DLC on the way anyway. I guess it depends just how much money needs to be recouped for bringing these tables on the new engine.
Maybe a significant saving on each table somone had on the previous game should be offered. Like 75% off or something?
Was extremely disappointed that they didn't bother adding any dualsense features
May as well buy an Oculus Quest 2 an buy Star Wars Pinball!! It’s like ya really there in ya Star Wars man cave playin pinball. You can earn Star Wars stuff to decorate ya man cave. Very good game!
Wow...it's been on PC for a year and they really just stuck with that horrendous monetization scheme that everyone hates, huh?
Anyway, having to literally re-buy every table I owned, which was most of them, is a deal-breaker.
Eighty quid a year!
The whole idea for me was to save the hassle of going down to the pub for a pint and a few games every now and then.
But at this price I might as well get my shoes on and order an uber.
I have lots of the tables on Pinball fx 3, there is no way I am paying for them all again. Could they not have done a one off upgrade fee say £20 and all the tables you have bought carry over.
This game is an effing con. I've got a big collection on the previous version and I'm annoyed that it doesn't carry over but I can live with it.
What they are charging for a pass or new tables is a joke. Far too expensive. Bloody crooks. And for what? Visually I can't tell the difference between the new game and the old one so why would I bother? What a bunch of cupid stunts.
@get2sammyb @Robocod Pinball Arcade just feels 'right' on a lot of its tables. It's such a shame they lost a lot of the best tables when it was at its height. The challenges are fun too.
@Gamer_Guy Yep,played tables like Addams Family,Ripley's Believe or Not & other big name ones on my buddy's Pinball Arcade, hit the spot!
I found an old obscure pinball I hadn't played in years called Eight-Ball,& bought it the moment I saw it!👍
Let's see how long it takes them to start offering sales - I picked up many of the tables in the older versions of the game from sales, I expect I may do so again for new tables I don't own elsewhere.
Buying the tables I already own again is a bit of a stretch, when the last version runs just fine in backwards compatibility on my PS5 - why bother? I don't care one bit about decorating the room around the table - I just want to play the pinball game, not dress-up.
At least until my kid gets bored with her new PSVR2 headset and I get to try it...maybe they'll have support for VR in this version by then (I've heard rumors it's coming, but not available at release - can anyone confirm?). But again, I'd likely buy a couple tables I don't have already, first.
Total con. I installed it and couldn't believe I couldn't get tables I've already bought. It also isn't very good, with definite delay on the flippers, which needs fixing (this was on release, dont know if that's been fixed)
I've uninstalled it and will never give them my money again.
I have fx 3 on PC with every single table unlocked. I'd prefer to buy them and play on console, but these crooks deserve nothing.
@Titntin They've improved the input lag since launch, but it still could use further optimising.
@get2sammyb Thanks! On reflection my comment sounds a little more bitter than intended, but I hate to see the way the monetization model is ruining a great game..
@Titntin I think it's fair feedback to be honest. A lot of people feel the same way.
Hopefully they can right this ship and come up with something everyone feels is fair.
At least give people who bought the tables a discount. If they told me I could rebuy my tables for half off I would probably be more ok with this. Yeah you have to pay for new game system costs but I don't see a graphical difference at all and I'm done with the series now. Thanks for the memories, let's just get pinball arcade back.
I don’t find that the game is that excessive in terms of price. I enjoy the events and collectibles and the pass generally lets me participate in everything. Technically speaking, it’s a step up from FX 3, with better physics and graphics. Many licensed tables for a wonderful nostalgia trip and a lot of great originals! 5/5, play every chance I get.
