As the classic commentator’s cliché goes, Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge - Enhanced Edition is a game of two halves. Originally released for the Meta Quest 2, this intergalactic virtual reality adventure bundles up the original campaign and its superior Last Call expansion. The result is a wildly inconsistent affair, which – despite paying careful care and attention to PSVR2’s innovative new features – can’t help but feel like it’s trapped in the past.
Indeed, play this after launch title Horizon Call of the Mountain and you’ll experience a significant comedown. Guerrilla and Firesprite’s title may not be perfect, but it’s building on an additional couple years of design iteration, and it really shows. One example is how Star Wars handles item holding: by default, you need to physically clutch on to objects, including weapons, with the L1 and R1 buttons. This feels horrible, so you’ll want to enable Sticky Grabbing, which makes firearms more comfortable to use – but ruins throwables like grenades. It’s just bad design.
The campaign is loosely based on the Star Wars-themed section of Disney’s real-life theme park, but it gets off to a rotten start. You awake on a cargo ship, where characters relentlessly talk at you in a guided tutorial type sequence. While some great interstellar views save the scenario, it’s genuinely difficult to determine what the game actually wants you to do – and despite the underlying simplicity of the encounter, we found ourselves butting heads with it a bit.
You’ll eventually end up crash landing on Batuu, where you’ll encounter a multi-eyed giant named Seezelslak, who’s the proprietor of the planet’s local cantina. Exploring the bar, as though it’s a set from one of the films, will prove mind blowing for fans – but the initial quest that follows flubs through its unnecessarily long running time, as you battle your way through corridors filled with samey looking foes. There’s some novelty attached to physically operating authentic looking blasters, each modelled meticulously like they’re legitimate movie props, but it wears thin really fast.
To make matters worse, you can snap weapons and items to a utility belt upon your person, which we found made the game borderline impossible to play sitting down. While you can reposition the location of the belt in the settings menu, we ultimately resorted to playing the entire campaign standing, as everything felt far too cramped while in a chair. It’s cool seeing weapons you’ve collected sitting in a holster on your belt, and it fulfils that bounty hunter power fantasy you may have had since you were a child, but it’s far too fiddly to justify its inclusion.
The same is true of the multi-tool, which you’ll use to power up certain objects or unscrew panels. This is cool at first, with unique texture added to the PSVR2 Sense Controllers to make each utility feel unique – but once you’re unsealing your umpteenth crate, with nothing but credits and a spare grenade inside, you’ll soon find yourself making a beeline to the next objective marker, as you battle with the unremarkably repetitive nature of the game design.
But it does get better! The expansion pack, Last Call, is seamlessly integrated here – and adds far more varied story missions involving Solo: A Star Wars Story’s Dok-Ondar which take you deep into Storm Trooper territory and include several set-piece moments featuring larger-than-life characters. You’ll also play through a couple of chapters where you get to wield a lightsaber – pretty much essential for a Star Wars game, we’d argue – and assume the role of the IG-88 assassin droid from the Empire Strikes Back. These make battling through the blandness of the original chapter worth your time, and demonstrate much more ambition in the game design.
But, as alluded to above, it does make the campaign feel extremely inconsistent – almost like you’re getting the prototype and the final product bundled together, and you need to plod through the awful opening moments to get to the good stuff.
We will say that the PSVR2 hardware is used pretty well: the sound design is great across the board, utilising 3D audio effectively to allow you to pinpoint the location of blaster fire, while the headset will physically rumble when you’re damaged by incoming fire. It’s satisfyingly interactive, too: your left-hand doubles as a kind of wrist-based PDA, which you can push, prod, and poke to show objective markers, access a scanning tool, and much more. But while it does have a handful of truly breath-taking visual moments, it never really looks like a game built for the PS5, with samey corridors making up most of its level design.
And you’ll be seeing those same locations a lot if you want to wring every last drop of content out of this campaign, as side-quests will see you returning to the same locations and dealing with respawning enemies to complete them. The game had worn out its welcome for us long before we experienced everything, but we suppose hardcore Star Wars fans may find added incentive to keep going due to the fantasy fulfilment of it all.
Conclusion
Star Wars: Tales from the Galaxy’s Edge - Enhanced Edition starts out flat but does eventually get a bit better. You’ll need to trudge through a couple of hours of bland shooting galleries to get to the good stuff, though, and even then the title is largely let-down by repetitive encounters and some dated design decisions. The game takes decent advantage of PSVR2’s innovative features, but also underlines its Meta Quest 2 origins at times. And while there’s an unquestionable novelty to existing within George Lucas’ legendary universe, it feels like the license is doing a lot of the lifting for a mostly average adventure.

I thought this looked like one of the better VR titles. Gunplay looked pretty good from the gameplay i watched, albeit it was old pre psvr2 footage. Think i will wait on a sale as the asking price is pretty high anyway. Thats when i get my psvr2 anyway. Still not dispatched here in the UK.
Please review Zombieland, GT7, Res8, Kayak Mirage, Demeo, Moss 2. I understand you want to get content out during the hype period, and reviewing small short games is one way to do it, but this was an instalment release on quest so most of us know it’s questionable quality.
Thanks for the review! I was on the fence about this and now I'm going to hold out for the next Star Wars PSVR2 experience instead (there's bound to be a decent one coming at some point )
@thefourfoldroot1 We will but there's a lot of games and we've only had one headset. Tried to prioritise the big ones first with Star Wars and Horizon.
We'll get to everything don't worry, but it will take a little bit of time.
@get2sammyb
Ok, cool. I just don’t consider this hodgepodge to be a “big one” I guess, lol, maybe the name is big, but everyone knows this game by now. What may have been useful is a comparison with the quest version but I don’t know if you guys have access.
Looking forward to all the reviews.
@Kidfunkadelic83 UK chap here, got my despatch email at 11:20. It's coming via DPD. I'm not rubbing it in, literally just to let you know to keep an eye on those junk email folders!
@munstre
Yes, mine still says “preparing to ship”.
VR is still not ready..
Not one that was really on my radar, I am curious about the likes of Moss though and already have Kayak installed plus the updates for GT7 and Resi oh and I now have the G29 wheel as well
@AhabSpampurse i keep checking my order on the Playstation website and it just states preparing to ship. Probarbly doesnt helt that i pre ordered on the 15th so im guessing im at the back of the cue.
@thefourfoldroot1 same here, though I did change mine from the Horizon bundle to the standalone late on, so I'd be surprised if I do get mine tomorrow. I'm off all week and next Mon, Tues so I'll have plenty of time whenever it comes
@DarkestHour
Absolute codswallop. Please try not to comment on things about which you clearly have no knowledge. Yours is not an opinion, it’s merely a declaration of ignorance.
Dang… was gunna pick this up. Prob wait until it’s on sale

@DarkestHour
It must be nice to have no need for evidence in your statements. Perhaps you could let us all know why you consider VR “not ready”. We might be able to educate you. Or at least you can demonstrate your exacting standards to the rest of us.
Was thinking of getting this pretty soon but will wait for a deep sale instead. Good review!
I played this on the Quest 2...and I'll agree it was a very hit and miss experience, but damn...5/10 is harsh.
@mac_da_man
Honestly, for most, although not all games that come from the quest, you didn’t need to wait. Just read the quest review and list of PSVR2 improvements and you’ll be able to decide. It’s the big hitters like GT7, RES8, NMS, Switchback, that we need to wait on reviews for.
@ThorsHammer yes. and it is a quality product now in terms of graphics, shaders and lighning. You can stick your head onto every surface and it is sharp and full of detail. Another level compared to the quest version tbh.
This never looked like a particularly good game even from the official video with the listing. It's a game that wants to be really cool, but even in their official video, the "cool" always seemed to end at the cantina while the actual game seems one of those endless storm trooper shooters from the early '00s. This review actually made me more interested that there's a better second half, because I'd not have guessed that from the videos. I still don't think I'd touch it unless there was nothing else new appealing for a long time though.
Shame it’s not better, but it sounds like something to pick up later. I hate playing as a standing character sitting, so that doesn’t bother me at all.
I like the idea, but it never struck me as a must-have. Some Star Wars VR is very needed and should be done better though.
@AhabSpampurse Same same.......cant wait

Looks like my pre-order is going to arrive late; in the EU PSVR2 was on general sale as opposed to Sony only. I used my preferred games/pc place and they've changed the delivery date to the 24th.
Nevertheless, the launch line up of games has looked underwhelming and Quest's influence on the genre (I love my Quests) is looking like it could be a problem for a while.
Sulking

@Kidfunkadelic83 still "preparing to ship" here as well, bought the bundle on the 15th of November.
Fwiw on reddit people suggest the non-bundle version has been shipped.
I'm instead secretly hoping that the people that received their confirmation live somewhat remote and DPD needs to ship their parcel earlier to make it in time. If that's the case, then, if you live in a big city you could still get it tomorrow but only be notified late.
@Drawfull
I think it’s actually a great thing that quest ports are a thing. It will mean PSVR2 is the place to play pretty much everything at a quality far surpassing mobile units and a price far under what an equivalent PC and PCVR headset would cost.
The “problem” currently is twofold though. Firstly the games where not made with PS5 power in mind, so don’t have that quality baked in from the start, and secondly, most people with quest have an extremely limited number of new games to play. But that’s normal at a platform launch anyway and will remedy over time as it always does.
@thefourfoldroot1
I agree with that, but for anyone that's been in VR for years, you can't argue that the launch line up is pretty underwhelming. I am looking forward to the big three titles, and I haven't played Village apart from its introduction section so that'll be great hopefully.
The lack of Beat Saber at launch remains a bizarre omission though - even though, I'll probably use my modded Quest 1 for it anyway as I've hundreds of customs on it.
I share a concern mentioned by Digital Foundry going forward though in that if the headset doesn't get the foothold in the market now are big third party devs gonna jump in post-launch and focus on it, or are they gonna continue starting with Quest (2, not pro) and scaling from there? Most launch titles are either Quest/PSVR ports that have already had the hard yards put into their development you'd think.
I'm a VR advocate, and I'm sure I'll get enough hours out of GT and Village to justify the entry cost, but I do have reservations about this headset's long term prospects.
@munstre I dunno. I've used VR since 2016 or so with the Vive, and I've played a very high percentage of the stuff coming out for this before, in some cases years before. It's a good line up for newcomers I suppose.
@munstre Absolutely. I said the launch line up is underwhelming, that's all.
The future is unknown.
@stassinari got my shipped notification about 2pm.i ordered the standard version. Yours should be soon buddy.
@Drawfull Yeah the games are just bad looking. If you are excited about VR in general maybe the headset is worth getting, but if you only care about great games we might have to wait for years.
@Drawfull
I guess it depends on where you are coming from. You have been playing VR for many years and have played many of the launch games, albeit at a lower quality. However, the vast majority of gamers have not had that experience. The PSVR2 is aimed at PS5 owners, and so they would at most have some experience with PSVR, but most likely not.
As such, it is hard to say the launch line up is anything other than the greatest platform launch line up of all time, apart from for a few fringe cases like yourself.
That’s not to invalidate your opinion, but just to say that your experience will not be the experience of many other people. As such you should probably add a qualifier, rather than just have the blanket statement that the launch is underwhelming.
For me, RES8 and NMS will be worth the price of admission alone, and then games like Switchback, Moss games, S&S games etc are just gravy.
@thefourfoldroot1 That was kinda my point, I agree with you.
I preferred NMS when it was a more, er, basic game but I am looking forward to Switchback, obviously the Moss games will have been played by a lot of VR users by now, but that doesn't make them bad games.
I guess I was hoping for PSVR2's HLA. I hope it'll come. TLOU could work really well in VR for the most part, for example. Actually, Sony!? Make ND do that!
@Drawfull
Yes, I’ve always said TLoU is just the right game for VR. Relatively sedate stealth gameplay, and the emotional impact of eye contact and human scale characters would make that game sing to its strengths.
For me, Resi8 is that killer game. GT7 is for those who like racing / car games. There are a plethora of multiplayer shooters for those guys. Rhythm games are certainly covered. Zenith for MMO. Even have an arcade shooter representative in Zombieland. Then got the graphical wonder of Kayak VR with it’s more relaxing experience…pretty much what we are missing though is a platformer on the level of Astro Bot RM (the greatest platformer of all time) and an RPG like Skyrim VR (Damn MS for buying that away from us!).
Between the big games I mentioned, Switchback and Horizon, I’ll be jumping into lots of smaller experiences, like Garden of the Sea and that Puzzle game that got my attention.
I think what we can be sure of is that there will be more than enough to play. And certainly for those of us who never had a quest.
Adored this game on Quest 2. Waited till the update/expansion before I played it and its a wonderful Star Wars experience which I've heard (elsewhere) is even better on PSVR2. £40 is bad pricing though and i won't be double dipping unless in a sale. Oculus have learned that £22.99 is the sweet spot for VR games, up to £30 for the more impressive games. This is at most a £30 pounder. Most Star Wars fans will enjoy this game. Now we just need Vadar Immortal on PSVR2.
@munstre I'm not sure who you're arguing with. I am excited for the launch, I just wish that there was more than ports.
Outside of the comments in here, I know of only one other person buying PSVR2 that hasn't used VR before. I'm not sure the percentage is as small as you imagine.
Anyway, off to refresh the tracking page repeatedly. Hope we all get ours tomorrow!
@fluggy Yeah the VI series would be cool.
@thefourfoldroot1 I'd sell my son for it tbh.
@munstre They really aren't. Crack on. All the mainstream VR reviewers are praising the hardware, bemoaning the software.
But maybe all the newbies know better?
Like I said, crack on.
Edit: for the avoidance of doubt, I have this coming, I am 100% behind PSVR in all its forms. But we don't need to sugarcoat subpar stuff, just cos it's Sony.
At a 600 quid entry, I'd be surpised if any more than 20% was 'new to VR' as well. You do you, I'll do me. Mwah.

@TeapotBuddha got my dispatch email about 2:30. Should be here tomorrow
@Kidfunkadelic83 @TeapotBuddha has yours arrived yet? Mine is still marked as "Preparing To Ship" and my confirmation email told me it should arrive sometime between the 22nd and 28th Feb - however it arrived at my front door about 45 minutes ago
Posted by a friend of mine earlier this morning.
Anyone in the UK still waiting for their PSVR2:
On your laptop/PC open chrome. Go to your orders at direct.playstation.com, open the "Order Details" page for your PSVR2. Then right click on the webpage, click Inspect, go to the Network tab. Refresh the webpage, and you should see a load of data appear in that Networking tab. Sort the "type" column by XHR, and then hover over each row until you find one that starts with "api.direct.playstation.com", for me it's always the 3rd row down when I sort by type with XHR at the top. Click on that row. Click on the preview tab on the right, and you will see a consignments field with your tracking ID. Then go to the DPD website to track it.

@TeapotBuddha hope it arrives swiftly for you! Call of the Mountain seems to be taking forever to download for me so not sure I'll get to play the damn thing today, but nice to have it arrive all the same
@KingdomTears yes mine was exactly the same dates and i got mine about 12am today. My wife ordered me the charging dock and that arrived today too but wasnt even marked as dispatched. Kayak is defenately the best game graphically that ive seen on it. GT7 didnt blow me away although the feeling in VR is cool. Enjoy.
@Kidfunkadelic83 awesome! Just downloading Kayak VR as I type so looking forward to trying it out. Enjoy also!
I’ve been enjoying this game quite a bit as a vr newbie. I played more of it today than I did Horizon, and I love the Horizon world. I guess it depends on whether or not you’ve played it before and how big of a Star Wars fan you are. It’s hitting the spot for me for sure.
Interesting. Alot of youtubers seem to like this game. Maybe its just brand recognition? I downloaded the demo to see for myself. We'll see.
