The Ascent was met with slightly mixed reviews when it launched on PC and Xbox platforms around eight months ago, but it arrives on PlayStation 5 a much improved game. A slew of updates have fixed bugs and rebalanced various gameplay elements since the title's 2021 release. What's more, new content — like New Game+, a transmog system, and a photo mode — has been added. PS5 players get all of that good stuff right off the bat, alongside some rumbly DualSense functionality.
For the uninitiated, The Ascent is an isometric twin stick shooter-RPG, set in a grimy cyberpunk space colony. You play as an 'indent' — essentially a slave who knows how to use a gun — forced to take on odd jobs for the criminal bigshots and shady corporations that keep things running. Story-wise it's all pretty straightforward and, at times, a bit stale — but the game's impressively detailed and often gorgeously dilapidated setting really carries the experience.
Screenshots don't do The Ascent justice. On a big TV with HDR in full effect, the neon-soaked bazaars and rubbish-ridden backstreets look fantastic. It's almost like gawking at an expertly crafted and painted tabletop game — the environments are just that granular.
The title's RPG mechanics aren't quite as engaging — but it's still fun to find good loot and level up your custom indent. Building a character is fairly simple with a handful of stats that you can pump skill points into, but more depth can be found further into the game, when upgrading your arsenal and augmenting your cybernetic implants becomes a priority. Stumbling across an effective weapon that suits your style of play is also a highlight.
It's a shame, then, that The Ascent's combat never truly feels like it evolves over the course of its 15 hour runtime. The gunplay is quite twitchy and satisfying — enhanced by haptic feedback — but there's just not enough variation to make each fight stand out from the last. It's not what we'd call mindless, but the later hours can definitely feel like a bit of a slog, depending on your tolerance for samey and sometimes lengthy encounters.
The Ascent's a solid, if somewhat repetitive shooter, propped up by eye-popping environments and a reasonable amount of RPG depth. If you can stomach some grindy mission design and the occasional buggy interaction, then there's explosive fun to be had here.

If anyone's got any questions about the game or the review, let me know and I'll try to answer them!
@ShogunRok If you had the chance to play the Series X version at launch, are there any improvements to the visual side?
I'm asking because a friend of mine played it on Xbox and mentioned the game generally appeared a little blurry, which caused unusual eye fatigue after a short time for him.
I have been looking forward to this. I am always looking for a sci-fi Diablo and I'll take whatever I can get.
Did they add ray tracing to this version?
@Voltan I didn't play the launch version, unfortunately, so I can't say for sure. All I know is that it's received quite a few updates since, so it wouldn't surprise me if graphic fidelity was tweaked, assuming it was an issue before.
Not for 30 bucks but sometime for a discounted price around 20 bucks I’m going to buy this. I like this twin stick shooter.
@ryanburnsred Don't think so, but not totally sure. There's no ray tracing option in the settings, at least.
I sunk many, many hours into this game on the Game Pass and really enjoyed it. Little bit repetitive? Maybe, but the world feels very alive, and the progression was fun. If the game had been recommended to me, I would have been happy with that recommendation...
Played on GamePass. Can get a bit too difficult at times but it’s an awesome game. Of course, me being a fan of the cyberpunk style setting probably taints my opinion a bit.
@Voltan obviously everyone has different vision but I found the game a graphical treat. I can imagine all the lighting/neon could negatively effect some people. There is a video on YouTube of a modder who got into a first person perspective and the detail is insane for an isometric/top down game.

Played at launch on the Series X and loved it, there were some issues with co op if I remember but I played solo. I believe a few updates has ironed these out though. My one gripe would be that the game lacks very little replayability.
@SacredPYRO That video's insane, really hammers home the amazing level of detail in the environments. Seriously impressive for a small team, too.
@SacredPYRO when I first saw this video, I was incensed that cyberpunk was nowhere near this level of detail.
I thoroughly enjoyed this on Xbox GP. At launch the game had some nasty difficulty spikes but they’ve been addressed now (they’ve since added a difficulty option). Considering the size of the dev team (only 12 people I think) the game looks great with its cyberpunk aesthetics and loads of detailed environments. Recommended if you haven’t played it yet.
@SacredPYRO Oh wow. I understand that's the PC version but that's some good stuff.
I'll probably check it out at some point, thanks.
Yeah i'm sold..i'll add this to my list for when i'm finished with elden ring...
Highly recommended. I might even double dip and play it again on PS5 in the future when the price drops.
@ShogunRok This looks kind of interesting! A definite Blade Runner style vibe going on.
Don't suppose there's any chance of a PS4 mini-review, is there? I'd like to know how the Pro handles it in particular.
@Royalblues There's cross-play between PS5 and PS4, but that's it (also between Xbox consoles and I think PC via Xbox). Never know, though, might come in an update someday.
Enjoyed it.
Had issues with the combat. Especially that enemies "tactics" sometimes is to basically rush you.
The world is great to explore. Tons of little details everywhere. "Superbly detailed setting" is 100% correct for sure. It deserves a 4KTV.
I'm a sucker for this cyberpunk/Judge Dredd aesthetic and I need more local co-op stuff so I'll probably pick this up while it has the Plus discount price.
@sanderson72 Sadly not. I know it can be frustrating when people might not have a PS5 and we're doing PS5 reviews, but it's a case of limited resources. Reviews (even mini ones) take a lot of time, so doubling up on games across two platforms just isn't something we can do efficiently.
In an ideal world we'd be able to review games on PS5 and PS4 (or at least test every game on both), but yeah.
Having said that, if a game really struggles on old hardware and it's brought to our attention, then chances are that we'll try and cover it via news articles.
@sanderson72 It's probably the same as Xbox One version, which is locked at 30fps.
Is this 60fps on PS5?
I completed on Series X last year, was ok I think. Good action but I remember not liking the map layout and progression.
Had a lot of bugs at the time but I'm sure most have been ironed out by now.
@frankmcma It is, yeah. Buttery smooth even when the action gets completely chaotic.
@Legacy2K There are still some (minor) bugs in this version but nothing like the rampant bugs I'd heard about on Xbox/PC at launch. Thankfully seems like the devs managed to squash the worst stuff with all of the updates.
Enjoyed this on game pass but had some hard difficulty spikes playing solo
@ShogunRok Sweet! I think I'm gonna get this, looks pretty great, thanks for the review!
@ShogunRok
Sadly Sony is 100% against crossplay unless something like Fortnight can force their greedy little hands.
@ShogunRok Wait a minute, does the PS5 version offer real HDR!? (Not the forced fake HDR, e.g. having your PS5 HDR settings set to “Always on”).
If my memory serves me right it was SDR on Series X at launch.
Is there adaptive triggers? If so how are they? How’s the DUALSENSE integration?
How does this compare to the Xbox Series X version with regard to performance and visuals?
I've just installed this and its very slick..very atmospheric and sounds brilliant but that is a long load time for a ps5..thats my only gripe so far..
@ShogunRok 80% of gamers are still on ps4 gen it seems. 120million ps4, 20 million ps5, so 100million left still on ps4 vs 20m ps5.
And ps4 still outsells ps5 until at least end of jan of this year..
@SacredPYRO Thank you for sharing.
@Billythepizza No adaptive trigger support but the haptic feedback is good. Lots of different rumbles for different actions.
@Hakiroto It's the same as far as I'm aware. Flawless performance based on what I played.
@Jtheripper True, but as a media website it doesn't make sense for us to focus on outdated hardware. We generally cater to hardcore PlayStation fans, so there's a need for us to keep up.
@ShogunRok Great. Thanks for the reply.
Played this recently on Xbox.
It ticks all the boxes for a game I would enjoy.
Shooting
Alien monsters
Cyberpunk
Old school
Indie Team
After 2 hours uninstalled as it was so boring.
Been playing on PC GamePass and it is visually stunning. The gameplay is a bit average though so I think this review is spot on. Might finish it one day but for now I have far too many other things to work through
Cool word up son
@ShogunRok well i thought that would be a probable reply. As for hardcore, depends in which way, but if you say so i guess.
As in 'oh i need to be on this new gadget' maybe, but as in hardcore gamer, not so sure how it fits, as the content here is far from hardcore. Pretty mainstream it seems.
Which is fine of course.
Just finished the game. Excellent. It’s seriously one of the most gorgeous games, and I love twin stick shooters.
Played 30 minutes and already regretting my purchase. All the tutorial pop-ups are driving me nuts especially since you need to hold O for like 5 seconds to confirm. Honestly this trend of holding a button for 5 seconds to confirm needs to go away in games. It's worse than microtransactions. I'm still triggered by Cloud's high five to Aerith.
@Jtheripper there is a reason every new game sells by far best on ps5.
@naruball this reason would make sense yes.
I played this one on Game Pass and dropped it over halfway. Stunning world and enviroments, fun gameplay but man it gets repetive quick...is more engaging in co op if you have a buddy to team up with.
That first person mod looks absolutely stunning! I played this a bit on GP but I'd definitely prefer to play in that perspective.
@Jayslow turn them off..problem solved
@ShogunRok I'm late on my reply but thanks. Just curious since it wasn't on Xbox either
@ShogunRok
can you recommend the game for someone looking for dumb shooter fun to pass time (like Dead Nation)?
@AdelZ Yeah, I think it's worth a look.
If you're playing alone and looking for a more relaxed experience, maybe lower the difficulty to easy, because it can be quite a difficult game at points.
I think you need to use your head more than you do in something like Dead Nation (with the RPG elements and slightly more tactical combat), but other than that, it might be what you're looking for.
So i'm 5 hours in and i'm enjoying it..really love the whole diablo/cyberpunk thing it has going and the soundtrack is awesome but i cant get over that loading time on the ps5..how long does it take on a ps4? Surprised that was not mentioned in the review to be honest...
@Voltan I did notice in the setting there is a film grain option which is toggled on by default, I have not tried it off, but that could be the issue.
@ShogunRok Good to know, thanks!
Just got it on ps4,,and tried the photo mode..
God damn, my mouth stayed open for a few mins lol.
You can go underneath the city, anywhere around, far up or up close anything,,up to reading small monitor screens.
And underneath the floors looks amazing too,full pipes,,cables dangling, machines fixing things like in the matrix revolution. And all looks super high quality.
Robots and characters moving about on floors, the photo mode lets you pause or unpause the game's, with animations,,lighting, etc.
Im slack jawed.
I can't wait to get a ps5 to see it in full glory,,i can see it looks bland vs ps5 on my base ps4 of course.
Music is great,,acting, voices,,animations physics. All works promptly.
I,sure hope they make an even bigger sequel, im a,sucker for blade runner, matrix style scifi.
Plus this was made i read by like 12 people dev team.
Its so well made that it be cool if you could have extra modes in 3rd and 1st ppov. Immersive.
I like top down games too like this but it be cool extra mode to unlock.
I'll be trying this one. Hopefully there's adjustable difficulty.
