I reckon them removable face-plates are true. Because when I was a Sony insider under NDA before it got taken down due to leaks, they was asking questions about new gen consoles and removable face-plates to customize the look of the console and they would sell themed face-plates like God of war etc…, plus wood effect and more.
So, they thought what a great idea, make them white so 99% will hate them and sell the face-plates at around £50 and there will be gloss black or Matt, so they can make a bomb of money from it.
