While the initial part of his statement is irksome to hear, the second part (where he said that consumers are now being more selective) is totally correct. Honestly, I used to buy yearly releases such as FIFA around 5 years ago, but now? No way - I had to be really sure that I like the game I purchase day one or pre-order (physical release, obviously) enough or if the developer has rather clean track record on their previous releases. For example, the last game I pre-ordered was Like a Dragon ishin, and RGG Studios have so far never disappointed me from my day one purchases.
On the other hand, I steer clear from any developers that have bad track records on this, such as WB Games (for Gotham Knights & Hogwarts Legacy), EA (for Star wars), and so forth.
So again, it doesn't deter me from buying games outright, but rather force me to be really selective
It's clear that the game was developed between Yakuza 5 and 0,as the game contains the parts that made both games really good... But also the parts that are dragging the games down.
Now I understand why there were several characters that seemed out of place in Yakuza 0 existed
For me, Yakuza 0 and 5 are the ones deserving a 10, followed closely with Lost Judgment and Yakuza 6 with a 9. I haven't finished Ishin yet, but from the time I've spent I suspect it will be a strong 8 or 9.
I rank Judgment at 8 purely because of the gameplay that is grindy as heck, particularly against the street gangs towards the end. The story is actually one of the strongest in the series.
Kiwami 2, Like a Dragon (7) both deserve an 8 due to their engaging stories, despite the not-so-satisfying conclusion. I was not a fan of Yakuza 4 because I felt that the game became a drag on the parts of Saejima and Tanimura, despite how interesting their characters are.
Yakuza 3 was ambitious at best, but it was not that good, and similarly, Kiwami 1 is also so-so because of how lackluster the sidestories are. Both deserve a 6.
