The idea of a remake of PS2 all-timer Silent Hill 2 is one that we were admittedly a little nervous about. Bloober Team hadn’t quite managed to prove itself with its previous outings, so tackling a remake for what is widely regarded as one of the best horror games ever made wasn’t exactly a safe bet. However, Bloober proved all the naysayers wrong by delivering not just an authentic and faithful remake, but one of the very best games that 2024 had to offer.
Donning a more traditional over-the-shoulder perspective, Silent Hill 2 captures the iconic town with stunning fidelity. This is easily one of the best-looking games on PS5, with flaking paint, rusty panels, and that ever-present fog obscuring the eerily quiet town. However, for us, Silent Hill 2 actually impresses with what it doesn’t show.
This is an intensely dark game, and we mean literally. The darkness is oppressive at times, but it’s brought together with sublime sound design and best-in-class haptic feedback. This is one of those games you should play with the lights off and headphones on. Inching your way through some truly iconic settings as the mannequin-like enemies scuttle along the wall, with your trusty flashlight only revealing a flicker of movement — it's proper edge of your seat stuff.
