The main thing Geoff Keighley was doing in the lead-up to his Gamescom Opening Night Live event was tempering fan expectations rather than raising them — a rare change in approach for the host. Although, this is a video game show, so someone out there was still probably expecting to see Half-Life 3 and Bloodborne 2.
The actual announcements — for PS5, PS4 players at least — included Little Nightmares III, new trailers for Black Myth: Wukong and Crimson Desert, and release dates for Tekken 8 and Granblue Fantasy: Relink. A fresh look at the massive Cyberpunk 2077 update coming next month was also shown. For a full list of all PS5, PS4 announcements at the show, click the link.
As always, though, we want to know what you thought of the show. With lowered expectations (hopefully), did you enjoy what Keighley had to offer or were you still left wanting more? Place a vote in our poll and then expand on your thoughts in the comments below.

Nothing from Sony, we have to be getting a showcase or state of play soon.
What a loss of time...
I think I had more excitement during Sony's controversial June State of Play ...
Some surprises would’ve been nice, bit dull
I skipped it and simply caught up on all the announcements here. It sounds like it was an okay show I guess, but I’m certainly glad I didn’t waste my time by watching it.
Was okay, too much talking and filler stuff, but some interesting things in there
It was really good, they showed the games they said they would show.
Strong Microsoft sponsorship in the show, and nothing from Sony, which is really odd though.
I've been watching a thread on Twitter that included ever game shown and I'm really glad I didn't waste my time watching this. I mean there were a few things that interested my but for a 2h show they definitely didn't show much
It was fine I guess, nothing at all really exciting that warranted an event IMO. Good to get some release dates but seemed like they had a show just to have a show. I think Geoff is spreading himself too thin by trying to have 3 of these every year
Granblue Fantasy and Crimson Desert are both looking nice.
Crimson Desert in particular is looking crazy. Like a cross between Zelda, Witcher 3 and Red Dead or something.
Other than that it was more or less what was expected - An okay show full of gameplay updates.
It was...okay. It had some alright stuff but a lot of filler and free-to-play rubbish. Also I could do without seeing these Call of Duty trailers every single year. They're all the same.
Hearing "Lily the Pink" in the very silly "Thank Goodness You’re Here!" trailer was the biggest surprise of the entire show.
Just got home from an all day drive after dropping my kid off at college. Only thing I’ve seen before coming here was people on X complaining about “a movie trailer during a game show”. I don’t even know what movie.
As someone who only games on Switch and PS doesn’t seem like I really missed, well anything really.🤷🏻♂️
The clown who raided the stage had it right, needed some GTA VI.
Very meh for me. Some nice looking games but too much that I'm not interested in. Luckily, my expectations were low.
I can see why certain people would have enjoyed it though.
@Americansamurai1 Nah, I doubt we get anything this year except maybe a SM2 SoP
@MagisterMagi gotta show off the new hardware sooner or later. Plus there was pics of kojima working on a trailer or something and since he didn't show up at his bff event than PlayStation event of some sorts has to be coming .
@Americansamurai1 Hardware will just be another random Blog Post lol. Like for ths VR2, and Project Q, and Pro Controller
I really don't understand why they would fly people all the way to Germany, just to give them less than a minute on stage.
@rjejr Rebel Moon, Zack Snyder
@MagisterMagi we should find out regardless in the next month or so
@Americansamurai1 Rumours suggest we'll be getting a 90 live-service showcase mid October to see the year out.
Under The Waves!
Also, got interested in Zack Snyder's Netflix flick. Knowing how average most Netflix movies are I'm not getting my hopes up on it being epic, but would sign for it being at least being somewhat above average I guess
I kinda wished I had never played cyberpunk now! The changes look great, will definitely try the dlc early next year. Alan Wake 2 looks great too, otherwise not too much for me
It was rather meh though there was some really cool stuff at times like the Sonic news. I do agree with @Americansamurai1 that Sony's complete absence is likely a sign of a Sony event in the near future.
Even with tempered expectations Geoff succeed: Worst show of the year. What a barebones ad-video with so little tangible content.
A good show overall. It gave updates on more than a few games I'm interested in so overall I walked away happy.
@Sequel let's hope they show some single player 1st party titles really curious to see some new ips
It was fine. It showcased the rest of the year, which is what Geoff promised. I bought Sonic, so there’s a win, I suppose. I’m honestly really happy with this year’s release schedule.
I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I am feeling a bit nervous about next year’s though.
I thought it was perfectly fine. Geoff did a good job at setting expectations beforehand, so the few actual announcements made during the show were a pleasant surprise. I think the games presented mostly all look very strong.
It was never going to be the biggest, craziest showcase ever, but I'm pretty satisfied with what we saw. Nothing mind-blowing, but it didn't really need to provide that. Thumbs up from me.
He said there wasn't going to be anything and there wasn't. Wasnt bad was good.
I think some.peoole expect the world.
Gamescom has always been a thing and this event is literally just to open the show.
As soon as Zack Snyder turned up I turned off.
Not interested.
I believe though with 0 showing from Sony, I have to wonder will there be a showcase once spiderman 2 is out.
We really need to know what the line up for 2024 is and beyond, we literally have nothing to get hyped about without a few exceptions.
I know the games are coming I just want confirmation hahaha
@BeenGamingSince_83 Hey thanks that does make sense. Should have put 2 and 2 together as that movie was all over my twitter feed as well. Looks like "Foundation".
It was decent, The expections were correctly set and there were some nice bits in there. IF the expectations were not clearly laid out beforehand I would be more disapointed but I expected no Sony 1st party news and that is how it played out.
I expect a showcase Sept or Oct for Sony with the launch date of the new PS5 plus project Q in November.
We may also get a Spiderman 2 state of Play and if we are really lucky a Rise of Ronin State of Play (Due out early 2024).
I can imagine the main games for 2024 will be Rise of Ronin (early year) Stellar Blade (middle year) Wolverine (Late year) complimented by some strong 3rd party and addtional 3rd party exclusives.
@Mattock1987 they pre announced weeks ago they were not doing any new game announcements but updates to already announced games.
Eh, it was OK. Could’ve been better, could’ve been worse.
Had zero expectations so for me wasn't bad. The journey to the West gameplay, little nightmares 3, and comic game set in Barnsley were nice to see
Some good stuff, but a lot of boring blah blah too.
The amount of Gamepass/XBOX advertising was just crazy though. Keighley has apparently traded the Doritos and Dew for Microsoft. But hey if they offered me that money I would probably do the same!
If it wasn't for starfield or cyberpunk I wouldve given it a poor,I wouldve preferred to play starfield on my ps5 to be honest ,but oh well
Getting a release date for granblue fantasy relink was enough for me
I'm really sad I missed this! I never tune into these because usually they're pretty lame but it sounds like it was better than most recent E3 showcases and for sure better than the last couple State of Plays!
@twitchtvpat I know that, wasn’t expecting anything brand new but maybe a few updates on games that weren’t pre announced, like Death Stranding 2, the new persona games etc. Sony need to learn from Nintendo Directs about how to keep viewers engaged
The last state of play was miles better sorry
I really enjoyed it. Quite a few games that were never on my radar but are now.
I cant quite put my finger on it but I feel like gaming as a whole is getting worse and worse and I'm really talking about the triple A titles, not the indie scene, thats booming imo
@Adol_Xin It's Zack Snyder... He hasn't done anything better than low tier mediocre in his career. People need to hop off his hype train.
As for the show, terrible. Absolutely nothing that needed such a production for and really just a way for Keighly to pay himself on the back, which upsets me because I generally like him and what he has done in the past. This year's should have been postponed, or done in a bunch of mini episodes released daily throughout the week.
@Ironcore That's what happens when casual hobbyists continue to allow Microsoft to make gaming more anti-consumer. Paid online? Xboys. Supporting paid early access? Xboys. Anti-consumer-pass? Oh my ***** Xboys. GAAS? Xboys.Buying Bugthesda, Activision, and Blizzard and becoming the biggest 3rd party gaming company in the industry intentionally to hold a monopoly? Definitely Xboys.
Every single problem we have in the gaming industry today started with Xbox, that's a fact. Microsoft has always been the worst company in gaming and the casuals continue to let them go unimpeded. You want gaming to get better? Get rid of Microsoft.
Loved the "rent a crowd" who looked like they had just been pulled in from the street, told to sit down and randomly whoop n holler every now and then like COD bros overdosin on mountain dew and doritos.
@RobynAlecksys grow up, your the worst kind of gamer.
