Sony's marketing team has proven time and time again it doesn't play by the rules anymore, so it should not really come as a surprise it left exactly 24 hours for PlayStation fans to get excited for a new State of Play showcase. PS5 and PS4 were the focus along with a few PSVR2 reveals, but what did you make of the show?
Brand new game announcements included Tekken 8, Rise of the Ronin, and Like a Dragon: Ishin. We were also treated to updates on God of War Ragnarok and Stellar Blade — formally Project Eve.
10 games were shown in around 20 minutes, but would you say this State of Play livestream was a good one? Put your vote in our latest poll and expand on your pick in the comments below.

Oh my God of War Ragnarok looks amazing
God of war looks sick
Kratos Vs Thor looks amazing!
it was pretty decent out of the 10 games 3 were intresting, with god of war peaking my intrest
Happy to the see Project Eve again. It's really looking like a solid Action game. I can't wait. Did it show a date? I can't remember...
It was nice. Didn't go expecting much. Project Eve continues to look great, and I liked the new "Nioh" shame that one is slatted for 2014.
GoW trailer was cool, but I honestly don't need to see more of that game.
Can't wait for Tekken 8. Couldn't get into 7 last year.
For someone who loves Japanese games then yes, I thought it did the job it was intended to and boy was I surprised, project eve looked amazing and so did that ronin game, and exclusives as well....
Even the hogwarts legacy exclusive quest looks pretty interesting and by the info given its not just some simple quick quest, comes with its own dungeon and fleshed out story.
And then to top it off, we had what I believe to be the best trailer I've ever seen for a game, still got goosebumps now.
And to think, that was just 20 minutes....
1st and last were all that appealed to me. Though I thought it was decent overall, happy to see more GOW even though I don't need more and glad there was no delay.
@Leighdegree if Playstation Stars is all you took from that State of Play I think you need to re-evaluate a few things
As a 20 minute showcase with it already setting expectations on Japanese games, that was pretty good. Tekken 8, God of War, the Yakuza Samurai series coming to the west, Rise of the Ronin, and Stellar Blade. Definitely better than the Farm Direct today, everything felt pretty snappy and clean besides some PlayStation Stars stuff, even if there wasn’t a huge showstopper.
Nintendo's show was better however important to note most the great titles there were multi plat. Sony showed off my excludes. Yakuza Ishin and Project Eve were the highlights. Team Ninjas new game looked fun
Better then I was expecting, Sony have got the pacing of these down to a tee.
Ishin! ***** Ishin. A fantastic show just for that. And the Project Eve thing looked great too. But ***** Ishin!!! Yes!
Well 10 points to gryffindor looks like the Snitch earned an L.
Such a great SoP I’m genuinely interested in the majority of games shown.
Ishin was so out of left field. Looks like Like a Dragon is Yakuza moving forward?
Given the downbeat rumours before the show this was excellent. God of War will get the headlines (it looked excellent), but Yakuza Ishin coming over made me genuinely stand up and punch the air. FINALLY! That is the highlight for me.
Besides that, Hogwarts continues to look excellent, and Project Eve is Playstation's answer to Bayonetta. Rise of the Ronin looks intriguing, and its never a bad thing to see more tekken.
I do feel like we wont get a showcase now, but for what it was, it was a fantastic show
Yakuza Ishin being fully remade as opposed to a hd remaster was unexpected. Roll on February!
PlayStation on another level from Nintendo and Xbox as usual.
@Leighdegree don't like it? Then don't sign up to it, simple....
Also don't compare it to NFT's, you can't buy and sell these goodies, they are 100% collectibles, you know, like trophies...
God Of War looked ace.Project Eve and Rise Of The Shogun looked good but apart from that there was nothing else for me.
Ishin alone is enough for me to rate this 'very good'.
No COD? PS is dead!
or maybe not!!!
some excellent looking games, some new interesting ones. heres hoping they deliver them
@AndyKazama stop the cap.
That was a great little showcase. A number of brand new games and they all looked fantastic. Really looking forward to both those Koei games.
Short but very sweet. Tekken 8 was a great reveal and GoW Ragnarok looks incredible.
Except ps stars everything else was great..so a solid 9/10
It was fine. No day ones for me, and nothing that really excited me, but the games weren't bad by any stretch of the imagination.
That Yakuza game looked good, but, honestly, I'm so behind in this series now that it's difficult to muster any enthusiasm for new ones.
Definitely the worse showcase compared to the Nintendo Direct earlier, although it had an obviously better final trailer.
I agree that Sony has nailed the pacing, finally.
I've came away from the Nintendo direct and this state of play with a list of 17 games to play, it's been a very good day indeed for gaming.
Bring on TGS next
Good show! Short but substantial. Stellar Blade blade looks cool and being published by Sony is a good sign!
damn. that God of War trailer was soooo good!
I was excited for it before but after watching that!...Daaammnnnnnnnn.
I say both Sony and Nintendo delivered with their respective presentations. Definitely going to look forward to that Ronin game and the Yakuza Ishin. More feudal Japan games is good. Stellar Blade looks great too.
So many great games on both sides and my wallet is the only one not happy.
Synduality, Project Eve, and Like A Dragon Ishin for me please. Oh and that angry dad man game
Rise of the Ronin and Yakuza holy sh#t.
Not necessarily to remember. But Rise of the Ronin, that was pretty great. What they showed off was insanely cool. Already more interested in it than wo long and I usually prefer games with mythological creatures to fight. Yakuza ishin is awesome and project eve is shaping up to be more than just a trailer. The mech game from bandai also looked really intriguing. Overall pretty good
I came out of it with two new games on my wishlist so I'm happy - Rise of the Ronin and Stellar Blade/Project Eve.
I didn't know what to make of Project Eve when they showed it last year, but it looked a lot more interesting tonight. Sold.
Synduality has my attention too.
Between these, plus Zelda and Goldeneye earlier, it's been a pretty solid day.
God of War
Rise of the Ronin
Ishin Remake
Tekken 8
Stellar Blade looks fun gameplay wise(but I don't expect a decent story out of it lol.)
Id say they beat my expectations. That's two good State of Plays in a row as the last one was in June which was really good too. It's not earth shattering but it wasn't a wasted 20 minutes.
Didn't even waste the time watching it.
Ishin finally coming to the West made me smile so hard and Ragnarok just keeps getting better. Lots of new IPs aswel to look out for. Only downer was the loyalty program
This State of Play was great. Syn Duality, Rise of the Ronin, TEKKEN 8, +%÷=@/×/ Like a Dragon Isshin???!! Not to mention that stellar God of War trailer!
It was great.
It was fantastic Tekken 8 looks glorious and also good god Team Ninja slow down Wo Long and this new Samurai game? What did we do to deserve this? ^__^
@Ken_Kaniff yet you wasted it to come here and comment….. catch a grip
Fantastic showing! My 3080ti will finally have some decent games to feast on.
@Boucho11 - lolz. (That’s it. That’s the post).
Rise of the Ronin was the highlight for me. Looks amazing so far. Looking forward to Hogwarts and GOW as well obvs. I also quite liked that pacific drive game and the Star Wars VR game. All in all it was much better than I expected and I’ve a few new games for my wish list.
Minor games? Well I'll never believe that description for SoP again! Freaking awesome show!
@Totheteeth hahaha… true though….
Very very solid, I was expecting 20 mins of indies without charm but
Very nice and above everything very japanese just as some readers of this page where screaming for that kind of focus.
Better than expected, but I feel like a showcase won't happen this year with gow being here.
Funny how the best two shows of the year were state of plays I had no expectations for.
Tekken 8 can’t wait , god of war looks incredible, and the team ninja console exclusive game also looks amazing.
@Korgon I think that was just some influencer on twitter saying it was just minor games, Sony would not disrespect games like that
Far outstripped my expectations. Far better than the Nintendo Direct, I think I was at last somewhat interested in everything on show, and the final 3 of project eve, Robin and then GOW, wow. Sony are really starting to nail these SOPs
Came in with low expectations, holy hell, this State of Play was awesome.
This was really good for 20 mins. Rise of Ronin probably has Ubisoft wetting the bed, Stellar Blade looks great and sounds even better (loved the music) and Ragnorok looks amazing!
It was ok, some interesting games and it was a neat move to temper expectations with the blog post only to end up closing the show with GoW Ragnarok but I do feel Playstation Stars is very tone deaf. Also they could've done with a longer showcase.
I was pleasantly surprised - haven’t played a Tekken game since 3 back on PS1 but for some reason I’m very excited for it. The Yakuza announce was a nice surprise, the Ronin thing could be good, Stellar Blade is looking like a potential Bayonetta killer and God of War just looks ridiculously, unbelievably good.
God of war Ragnarok is going to be amazing. Game of the year
I've been a bit frustrated with Sony's PR this year. But they simply deliver for me where it matters most. At the end of the day it boils down to the games and that was a very good showing. Come on guys, give us a proper showcase including 1st party soon.
Was interested in Tekken 8 & project eve & got goosebumps from the latest god of war trailer can't wait for that
It was good. Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin both look like they could be good, but might not be my taste in gameplay. God of War looked strong, but I’m one of the twelve people in the world that is a PS fan that hasn’t been big on GoW. Tekken looked great, but again, not really my taste.
Hogwarts continues to impress, however.
I liked the last summer SoP significantly more, but RE and FF are just more my taste in games. The Direct already had me very pleased as well, so I’ve got no complaints.
@Leighdegree I'm not entirely sure how you class yourself a gamer if nothing interested you here. You chose to ignore all the games and focus on an optional reward system. GOW looks outstanding and there's at least 3 others that look great. Are you just a COD gamer or something.
Pretty good... if this is what Sony is calling "Minor" we in for one hell of a rest of a Generation
God of War is on another level.
It is truly amazing how far Digital Art has come thanks to gaming. Seeing these games in motion is mind blowing.
I thought it was really good actually. Picked up where the last one left off, and had a good mix of really cool stuff.
I don't need to be interesting in every announcement for the show to be good. I didn't know about some of the games announced which is also nice. Good job Sony.
I was actually pleasantly surprised, unlike being disappointed with the Nintendo Direct. I wasn't expecting much given what they described on PS Blog yesterday, but it easily exceeding my expectations.
Several surprise games, and I was just wondering what happened to Project Eve not that long ago. Now it reappears, and it's a Sony published title now. If Ronin is like their previous games (extremely difficult), I might pass, but it still looks good.
Sony might be failing to provide a roadmap for the future of PlayStation Studios releases beyond God of War Ragnarok, and I still hate Sony for that, but at least we have some new 2nd party titles that we didn't know about before (or in the case of Project Eve/Stellar Blade making a return as a Sony published title).
Not too bad for once, had some laughs. Decent surprise reveals. Gow managed to surprise me.
Did they announce a PS5 version of Sensible World of Soccer?
So it seems that racist snitch leaker was wrong about the quality of the stream after all.
@dschons i feel like they don't want to announce things too early now. unless they actually have something to show. we all know there are plenty of games yet to be announced. people can't let things be surprises any more.
Better than I expected.
I enjoyed: GoW, Tekken 8, Hogwarts, and Project Eve. The rest was meh, games that are a generation or two behind. It’s probably due to their engines though. Japanese games used to be the ones that pushed everything forward. You would think small sandbox’s and corridors worlds would look better.
Ishin getting a western release, Tekken 8 footage and God of Boy Pre-Teen years all looked fantastic.
nope it wasn’t . very boring
even after this showcase people are still gonna keep up the lie here about there being too many multiplayer (where ?) and that there’s not enough single player , when the ratio of quality single player to multiplayer is like 10 : 1
We already knew about games like God of War. Granted , it will be a fantastic game. But if you take the already known games, it came down to just a few announced games. Was hoping for a bit more.
@Leighdegree that part of the show was about 2 minutes ,and you felt the need to comment on that ,yer moaning minny ,what about the other stuff eeyore not impressed ?
@AndyKazama I mean
A lot of the titles here mentioned in the State Of Play were also multiplatform or not exclusive to PS5 only but also PC
I don’t normally find much joy with Japanese games, as I’m not much for what their culture admires in its entertainment. It just doesn’t trigger much in my mind.
Yet I must say it was a great selection! I’ll definitely give a few a try!
@Dman10 mgs and silent then
It was a great show ,I was pleasantly suprised ,some people are never happy ,im usually not to be fair, im a cynical tw*t ,but jesus...some people.
@OmegaStriver never known Japanese games to push anything forward as great as they are, im a big fan...but they use the same engine for decades.
@AndyKazama didn't watch the Nintendo show ,what was on? Mario ? Link ? Some karting and that ?
Some awesome looking stuff in there, namely Call Of Ronin, Ragnarok, & Like A Dragon: Ishin (just hook it directly into my veins!)
That mech game looked interesting too. So yeah, good stuff.
@Grumblevolcano Whats tone deaf about it?
I knew God of War would be awsome already, Stellar Blade, Rise of Ronin, Hogwarts, Yakuza Ishin, Synduality. I dont think i saw anything that annoyed me i loved it. Fantastic showcase 9.5/10 for me. 😁👍
And why are there people calling it a terrible showcase stop trolling.
@anoyonmus So what i can still play them on my PS5 cant i?
Where's the "fantastic" option? I can't believe this was so high-quality. Another one where so many of the games shown are things that really interested me.
Minor games my butt, almost 80% of the games shown are up to my alley. 2023 is pretty much a heavy year for me.
Also credits to Sony for supporting and publishing games like Ronin and Stellar. It may not be AAA but games like this is what makes playstation special.
@Boucho11 Its a poll, so yea I did. Don't get butt hurt guy.
Rise of Ronin and Ragnarok were really great. Good show; however, that Playstation Star thing was pathetic.
Good but not great I would say. I was expecting way more after they have been so quiet for so long. Kind of dissapointed I can't lie, but it was still ok
I had high expectations and ended up disappointed. Yakuza old spin off looks cool but I prefer LAD mechanics now. Tekken looks cool but not big fun of the series, shouldn’t they let Street fighter to shine first? Other than that meh and games we already knew were coming
I was hoping to hear more about Cy Games’ Project Awakening. Hope it hasn’t been canceled.
It was more than ‘very good’. It was great. (For a state of play TGS)
PushSquare brainless negativity didn’t age well once again.
@MrAutism there is something pathetic here alright. I'm also someone in his 30s, but thankfully not nearly as negative (yet?).
@anoyonmus how does the fact that a (third party) game is coming to other platforms affect your enjoyment of playing it on your ps console? Genuinely curious.
It was awesome. TK8, the new Yakuza spin-off game, Stellar Blade, and Team Ninja’s Rise of the Ronin made my day.
Ishin is the standout for me. Stella also looking great.
In terms of Stars…well, hopefully it isn’t just digital images they offer. Was hoping for store credit like on Xbox. I understand that Sony doesn’t have the money MS does to throw around though so might not happen.
I like that it will be retroactive in some cases. Less excited that there will be, what appears to be, times challenges for some things though. I don’t like playing to other people schedules due to a lack of time.
The trailer for the GoW sequel actually got me a little pumped for that game too. Looked to be a greater variety of action and a more intense story. Might actually have to give the original another try at some point.
Would have liked more and bigger VR games, but can’t have everything. Ultimately, Ishin is all unneeded to rate this as an excellent showcase.
As your average Japanese game enjoyer, this was one of the best SOP's Sony have made, not to mention all the great games at the Nintendo direct and the Judgment games and Triangle Strategy are getting PC ports, it's like they knew it was my birthday this week and every game I wanted for the foreseeable future is coming and soon😍
I didn't watch as I knew there was NO interesting games for me.
I only play kids games.
Ishin, Ronin, project eve and that mech game! This state of play was amazing! Exited for Ragnarok, but I was somewhat baffled why they showed that trailer last and not keep it for something we didn't expect.
Ishin alone would pretty much earn it a 'Very Good' rating from me, but on top of that there was Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin and Ragnarök. Solid stuff, did a lot I like within a short timeframe.
@AndyKazama Sorry mate, but the Nintendo showcase wasn't better, I don't think. It had its highlights (Resi on cloud, Raincode and Goldeneye) but the main takeaways from that showcase were 1) Square Enix is ridiculously desperate, and 2) Nintendo needs to work on some updated hardware ASAP - games cannot run like that in 2022 imo. This showcase was tight, focused and bought out some heavy hitters, pretty much just a 20 minute onslaught of high quality titles. I'm not a huge fan of Sony or Nintendo, but I just need to be real here. If you enjoyed the Nintendo showcase though, more power to you. I just didn't think it was all that great. This SoP though? It could be argued it was even better than the last one. Wasn't expecting SoP to be this great.
@Ralizah The Yakuza series is something truly special. I hope you'll get motivated to get around to it soon! 🤞
I'm gutted I slept on this showcase! Caught up with the highlights today and must say, this was a great show. Expected to see Pragmata, but the Tekken 8 and Ishin reveals were awesome, and so good to see Stellar Blade. Interesting to see Sony are involved here, making me wonder if some kind of exclusivity will be involved with Stellar Blade. Might be time to go seek out a PS5!
@OM1993 no need to apologise. I just love Atelier series and Ryza 3 won yesterday
@anoyonmus some were, some were pc and ps5. The latter I see as ps exclusive
Not being a fan of God of War or VR I wasn’t expecting a lot. So while there was more in the Nintendo Direct for me I was pleasantly surprised by this State of Play. Nothing jaw dropping but definitely a few games to watch e.g.Stellar Blade, Pacific Drive
@AndyKazama Different strokes for different folks, eh? For me it was Raincode that was the standout. Interested in how they're switching up the Danganronpa formula here. Hearing some new Masafumi Takada music was the cherry on the icing on the cake
I didn't expect much of the Showcase and I was pleasantly surprised. A lot to love and the God Of War trailer is heavenly. Can't wait till November 9.
I didn't watch it but I'm not particularly excited for anything that was announced. Ah well, plenty of more fish in the sea.
Some great looking games on show there, very happy from me!
@twitchtvpat I didn't say I don't want surprises but a little teasing of what's to come after God of War isn't too much to ask with the game this close to launch imo. Last year, they prided themselves on having more than 25 games in development at PS studios. Some of which have been in development for 5 years now. Obviously, if nothing is ready to show, don't. But that's hard to believe and you start wondering what their strategy is here. That said, I could even imagine that Sony abandons big showcases altogether.
It was soooo good! Really enjoyed seeing the God of War trailer and the controller. Tried not to watch the trailer so I could enjoy it properly when it releases but I couldn't turn my head away or close my eyes.
Tekken 8, Rise of the ronin, Project Eve, Hogwarts Legacy and Star Wars VR 2 has me excited!
I was expecting the show to be very average but it was better than I thought it would be.
I'll just say it was MARVELLOUS. Already preordered God of War: Ragnarok and Hogwarts Legacy. Can't wait to get the new controller!
@Anti-Matter Yes, I too did notice that Playstation stopped putting Kid/Family / Non-Violent games on its showcase
@Flaming_Kaiser How close the digital collectibles are to NFTs. Much like the real life price evaluation of cars in GT7, Sony appear to have set things up in such a way they can change their mind at any time.
If Playstation Stars was done in the PS3 era with digital collectibles being a part of Playstation Home, it would've been very well received. But with the existence of NFTs as well as 3rd parties such as Square Enix and Ubisoft actively involved, the concept of digital collectibles is ruined.
For me it sucked. Not into any of the Japanese games. PlayStation Star I curious about. But afraid it will become NFT. And well, what can you say about God of War?
2022 has nearly come and gone and we want to know more about Sony's other IPs. Already bored of Gran Turismo 7 and I am holding off on getting HZFW till it gets a big discount or is bundled in a complete edition.
@OM1993 oh yeah that new Spike game.
Isn’t that timed Switch exclusive from what I heard
So glad to get an update on Project Eve. And GoW looks great. For me this was the standouts, but I never expect to get hyped about everything announced. If I like a couple of games, it's been a good showing imo.
@anoyonmus That's the one! And it sounded that way, again another game that was referred to as a "launch exclusive" during the showcase.
@OM1993 I've already played Kiwami and, like, half of 0. The plan is to go back and play through all of 0 next year.
It's a fun series, for sure.
@OM1993 said First On Switch, so clearly Switch got timed exclusivity on this.
I think it will come to PC in the near future but idk about PlayStation and Xbox.
I had my expectations in check, but this was good regardless. This is 2 for 2 now, they've really got their pacing and prioritys solid with these showcases. No cheesy presenters, no filler BS, just wall to wall bangers. Plus a geniune surprise like Ishin...really enjoyed it.
@anoyonmus I do think it'll hit consoles eventually. I remember reading about this game months ago (albeit on Wiki when I was reading up on what games Masafumi Takada had composed post-killer7 and No More Heroes 1 & 2 funnily enough) and initially it was described along the lines as "releasing on games consoles". The wording on the games page has since changed to state it's releasing on Switch next year, but I'm still assuming PS and Xbox will get this down the line.
@OM1993 I think maybe a few months to a year long exclusivity.
For now it’s exclusive to Switch for now
@MrAutism I'm a grown adult in my forties and saw Tekken 8, Star Wars, Ishin, synduality, stellar blade and ragnarok. If you saw all of that and only noticed that there were digital icons coming up then maybe gaming ain't for you anymore. Or, you watched the nintendo one and are confused.
Seeing the logo of Team Ninja + GOW R is a no brainer & it's coming to a close!
@Grumblevolcano So its tonedeaf because you have a certain feeling based on assumption? Yeah thats not enough for me. It dont mind a good outrage but only if its based on more then personal feeling backed with some evidence.
Oh this was the BEST PlayStation event for me this year so far!
The rumored October Showcase is gonna have to hit hard to topple September's SoP.
I'm looking forward to all of the listed below games/DLCs.
God of War: Ragnarok
Rise of the Ronin
Like a Dragon: Ishin!
Stellar Blade
Hogwarts Legacy: Exclusive PlayStation Quest
Synduality
