On ps5 in settings there are presets which show resolution mode and performance mode but in spiderman miles morales it says fidelity mode and performance mode. Why does spiderman miles morales say fidelity instead of resolution mode.

To achieve something it takes more than practice it takes belief and confidence that you will succeed.

@Fujin I think it’s because “fidelity” implies slightly more than “resolution”, namely the inclusion of ray tracing to further the image quality over and beyond even the 4K resolution.

Most performance modes sacrifice ray tracing and native 4K rendering of the image. So you give up the fancy reflections of light as well as some image detail. Some games don’t have any ray tracing even in their high resolution/4K mode.

Rarely, some games have “Performance RT” meaning you’ll get the higher frame rate (60fps) and also some ray tracing (although the RT in Performance RT is a slightly hampered version of the RT in the full fidelity mode), but with 1440p instead of native 4K (and I think maybe it could be dynamic rendered 4K sometimes instead of 1440p, but honestly I’m not sure of how important that distinction is).

The Insomniac games like Rift Apart and their Spidey games have been some of the few to have this in-between “Performance RT”.

I’m no expert, but that’s my understanding. Miles Morales looks fantastic in all modes. But if you want to see the difference between fidelity with full ray tracing and performance without any ray tracing, then switch back and forth in an area with a lot of glass, water puddles, or shadows. You’ll see the difference RT makes. And you’ll likely feel the difference of 30 fps vs 60 fps just by swinging the camera around to see the contrast in smoothness.

It will be great when games can be 60fps, native 4K, and ray-traced all at the same time. I think Returnal does it, but if I recall correctly the ray tracing is minimalized somehow.

@Th3solution Returnal wasn't native 4K dude. Think it was actually 1080p utemporal upsampled to get to 1440p and then checkerboard rendering to get to 4K. Or something like that.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

@JohnnyShoulder Ah, I knew there was some kind of weird black magic graphical manipulation I had heard about. One of the perks to having a TV that’s less than 50 inches means that the difference between native and dynamic checkerboading is difficult to tell. 😅 It looked pretty good to me. I think Returnal’s HDR or contrasting neon light and dark tones helped to hide some of the graphical imperfections. That, and the fact you’re too busy running for your life to notice the scenery! 😄
