So basically, when I open games and the entire time I'm playing them, the console makes different pitched buzzing sounds depending on what being displayed on screen. My old plasma tv used to make a similar sound. I got rid of it just to have a next gen console make the same sound. Is this something I should look into or am I just being picky.

@EL-TAQUITO Mine does it too. Dunno why.

It’s called coil whine and unfortunately it’s quite common for “high power” electronics. Many PC GPUs do it too.

@Abarth_71 It depends on the game. Mortal Shell was noticeably loud to the point where it was an annoyance.

@Abarth_71 I know this varies between specific units but the only time I could clearly hear mine buzzing (to a point that it would be annoying if it lasted longer) was on one's game loading screen when it faded to white (so there was literally nothing going on in terms of graphics)

It happened a lot to me yesterday when I was playing Immortals Fenyx Rising. Weird enough, it actually seemed to change as I interacted with the game. Sure is annoying, I hoped that PS5 would make less noise than PS4, but it just changed the noise.

@EL-TAQUITO You should not be worried but do you want to know what causes it? And how it should be fixed?

It comes from the power brisk inside the console. On the Series X it is dampened by the hard foam that separated the vibrating parts (coils).

I hope the revision model of the PS5 do that as well and there will not be any whine about the coil whine

@Kidfried It seems to change depending on what’s on screen. It drives me mad but I think I’m starting to tune it out.

I've not experienced any undue noise with mine..my friends developed a buzzing sound but it turned out to be the case was a bit loose and when he pressed it gentley it stopped..weird how some seem to be noisy and some aint..

Kick out the jams!

I’ve also noticed that the console makes a cracking noise like plastic under strain. But only when I’m playing a PS5 game and only at the same time as the coil whine. I checked the screw on my base but it’s perfectly fine.

Yeah mine is silent most of the time. Don't recall hearing the disc drive since the update that fixed it, and that was hardly loud either.

Life is more fun when you help people succeed, instead of wishing them to fail.

Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.

I sent one back because of an extremely loud fan (sounded like a diesel generator) and coil whine. In return I got a completely new PS5 with the Delta fan, which is dead quiet. The coil whine is still very apparent and audible however, but it is nowhere near as annoying as the Nex-whatever-the-brand fan the original one had. That was one of the worst fans I have ever heard.

I only play with passive isolated headphones as I am sensitive to most things which makes me not hear the coil whine what so ever, but sometimes when taking them off and the PS5 is on I am surprised with just how loud it is.

Unfortunately it seems to be very common.

EL-TAQUITO

@Total_Weirdo yeah seems like basically every PS5 has the same amount of coil whine due to the capacitors. And thanks for the heads up about playing less demanding games, I'll try a few.

EL-TAQUITO

@Zuljaras yeah hopefully they'll make a slim version that's quieter. I like your play on words too.

Idk my ps5 is 1/20th the noise of my ps4 I couldn't be happier

@Chevyguy it’s not the volume people are complaining about, it’s the pitch.

Coil whine is a sound like a fridge or something and can change depending on movement in game etc.

So while it’s quieter than a PS4 the sound can be far more off putting to many.
